The older skate games were better games, yes. But I'm having a lot of fun in this one too. It's not even a game but a toy to me. Some emotes I don’t use and wouldn’t pay for. Others I find massively important as a universal language (pointing, tapping your board to hype up your friends).

Skate mechanics (and more tricks) should be paramount and the more trick variations/ability to add more tricks you have, the better a skate game is.

As for the real money payment system, a big issue games in development run into is funding. Sure EA theoretically has loads of money, but progression and upkeep of titles is based on player demand and its ability to fund itself.

The “early access” label to me says “we aren’t finished yet”. And with people requesting new tricks, map extensions, game modes, these are all foundational elements. If you had a full game that you paid $10 for and was S1 skate, so many people would say “so this is it?”

You could have saved your SVB’s from the free tier in the pass and got Grom. You literally didn’t have to pay, and won’t in a few days. Hardly a proper paywall when there’s free alternatives. But I do see it if you take everything said by an early and evolving dev team as concrete gospel.

What an interesting experiment when the current trend is live service to say “would this work as a skate game?” The amount of community meets not possible in previous games just being one example of how it works.

anyhow, I do agree tho. There is no way to separate longer/better/however you want to call it players from newbies. And that can be intentional, because it's inclusive and what not. But also it goes back to how this game is set up. There is no actual progression. Challenges or levels aren't getting harder or longer, etc. All challenges and content is available to everyone and as long as you pay OR play whatever timegated content there is right now, we're all the same and you indeed can't tell the difference between a person who has been playing for months and a person that just dropped 20 dollars.

Well, apart from the couple of permanent challenges and cosmetics you get form leveling up the city...so there is that.

But I don't know if wear and tear is the answer to that....
