yeah, just like for every new language you learn, you have to memorise the words despite knowing how to read them
however, i highly recommend learning words in context, not isolation. for example, instead of memorizing “사과 = apple”, learn it in a phrase like 사과를 먹어요. [I eat an apple.].
its just something that helps your brain store not just the word but also how its used as well, therefore youre less likely to forget it
i also recommend using tools like Anki or Quizlet to help you review words just before youre about to forget them
im just speaking from experience since this helped me a lot while i was learning korean
