Why is this not pronounced "oi" or "wee" and pronounced "oe" or "we"?

I really don't understand why, it's just sounds contradictory to me

first time witnessing someone that had the same problem as me when i first started learning korean haha

basically, ㅚ was originally pronounced as "oi" and it was historically more "accurate", but due to the fact that modern korean pronunciation has simplified, especially in casual speech, its pronounciation is very different than the spelling. korean spelling preserves historical forms while pronunciation has evolved. its really tricky, but sounds just evolve randomly to make things easier
