hii I’m trying to practice using 아/어/여 가지고 and would like help on making this sentence some more natural! I kind of have trouble sometimes trying to make the word before have one of those endings (어/아/여) especially with words I’m not familiar with.

I was trying to say:

저는 성격이 차분한서 가지고 친구가 많아요.

Is that correct? Should it be just 차분하 가지고?

Also I’d like some help on just trying to be more natural with these kinds of endings when learning new words and grammar phrases. Thanks!

Yes, that’s the sentence I was trying to say

#

I was just making up sentences trying to use 가지고 but I actually get a lot of other people saying that I’m pretty calm lol so I just said smth like that

#

Idk why this era of me learning Korean is so hard, it’s like a weird intermediate stage but I feel like I’m there’s holes still 😭

Or 차분한 성격을...

#

But I don't think you need the 가지고 in the first place here

#

성격이 차분해서 친구가 많아요.

But then what are examples of sentences where 가지고 is more appropriate to use?

hasty shard

Hmm I'm not too sure about when it's more appropriate

This is an abridged version of the full live stream from 12-10-2018 about "to want" and "to have." It covers the verbs 있다, 가지다 (갖다), 키우다, and 원하다, as well as the grammar form 고 싶다 and 고 싶어하다.

@hasty shard your first statement is grammatically wrong. When you use 은 거(를) you can't add any reason principle. Just say 차분해 가지고
Using 은 걸 changes the phrase from verb to noun, also , the use of the particle 를 just threw you off completely

#
  • 가지고 is used to show reason in like informal settings, mostly used during speaking,
늦게 왔어 가지고 나한테 화가 나봐

Using it like that makes more sense, that how it was taught to me.. but I was trying to practice making sentences with it and just made that one as an exmple

저는 성격이 차분한 걸 가지고 있어서 친구가 많아요.
Referring back to the sentence in question, this is very awkward but nothing is technically ungrammatical about it

[차분한] modifies the bound noun [것(을)] and we nominalize the phrase [차분한 걸] which modifies the noun [성격], having the whole clause [성격이 차분한 걸] function as a noun phrase. We can avoid the interpretation of the personality itself possessing something that is calm by adding the topic [저는], so "I" am in possession of the personality, the subject of the embedded clause.

[저는 [성격이 차분한 걸 가지고 있어]서] 친구가 많아요.

#

Again I do realize it's not natural but I don't think there's anything fundamentally ungrammatical about it
