difference between 먹었다 and 먹었어요

hello,, i was trying to learn past tense and saw 먹었다
but i was pretty sure it was 먹었어요,, right?

먹었다 is casual formal form, used mostly in writing only. 먹었어요 is the informal polite form which you would use in your daily life
