It's a period marked by the slow introduction of modern combat, at the end of it all, despite a period of many new ideas and technological revolution, entirely new methods of how humanity should make their voices heard, it's also a period marked by a century of some of the most horrifying combat the people who lived through that period would have ever seen until 114 years later.

Medieval: Total War: I think that it can be argued the first two TW games went quite heavy on darker, more ambient music and Medieval absolutely sold itself as a game set in a gritty, dark world. I haven't played the game as much, but I do think the soundtrack is fantastic. Arab Battle 1, Arab Battle 2 and Arab Battle 3 are my personal favorites. Are they very orientalist tracks that don't sound at all like actual Arab music? Absolutely, but they're also goddamn bangers that get you hyped as hell.

Rome: Total War: My beloved, my first, my favorite game in the series. The soundtrack got nominated for a BAFTA award, and absolutely deserved it. Also the first game in the series with proper names for its tracks! Journey To Rome Part II is incredible, with its rising beat backed up by the vocals chanting "IMPE-IMPE-IMPERATOR!"

Greek Intro, the best track for the best intro in the game. Wistful and intricate. "The Greeks could have ruled the world... Alexander did..."

Forever, the ending track, starting the tradition of TW credit songs (in the Jeff van Dyck games) making you feel bad for winning.

Medieval II: One of the more sprawling soundtracks from these games, which I suppose is fitting given that we're talking about four geographic regions that need to be represented, plus the expansions. Less grim, more lavish than the original Medieval in terms of tone, though there are still some similarities. The standouts to me are the following:

Lakota Lambada. The Lizardmen track we deserved but never got. Sweeping, exotic, with the rising whistles and chanting. I remember instantly recognizing it when Youtubers used it in WH2's hype period prelaunch.

Dream of Albion from the Britannia expansion. Longing, sad, with the drumbeats near the start and middle giving you the impression that this is about the prelude to a war.

Tally-Ho from the same expansion, short but deserves it for the awesome bagpipe backing.

Mountains of Hope. The menu theme for the Teutonic expansion. I love the relentlessly grim, forbidding vibe, like you are in this dark frontier at the edge of the civilized world. Which I suppose is very fitting for the tone of the campaign's header faction.

Hymn of War. If Lakota Lambada is the Lizardmen track we deserved, then Hymn of War is the Empire music I forever regret not having in the Warhammer games. It's on the darker, more threatening side, with lots of drums and this tight, regimented, regular beat with a rising swell towards the middle. But it's what I have in my head when I imagine an Imperial army going to battle. State Troops under a heavy drum beat beneath their standards, proud, defiant, but there is this grit or darker undertone to it because the Empire doesn't quite do storybook heroism like Bretonni- ... wait, this isn't Warhammer.

Empire: Total War: I'll be real, I barely played this game and I remember absolutely none of the tracks from it. It's probably one of the games that I feel was a missed opportunity? Set in the age of classical music and grand orchestras, it had a lot of potential material to mine for inspiration but sadly didn't go for it.

Napoleon is the better game and that also applies in terms of music. The main menu theme is one of the best out of any Total War game, this sweeping score that conveys the grandeur, ambition and tragedy of the Man of Destiny. Better than that film from last year for sure and in a tiny fraction of the time

Shogun II. Jeff van Dyck's last soundtrack for Total War, and up there with the rest. He brought an energy that nobody else quite has to this series. I miss him so much...

For the Daimyo is a masterclass in buildup. It's ironic that another track is titled Tsunami, because this is a real tsunami. Starts off with strings, then backs them up with drums and keeps getting higher and higher until it crests and crashes. One of the best mobilization/tension tracks in the series.

Ona Hei is another banger, and I feel like the two are almost perfect companion pieces. The taiko drums and vocals are absolutely incredible.

Bird of Time is the last credits song of its type, and as far as I am concerned the best one. Just listen to it.

Rise of the Samurai: Wait, it had unique music? Well, I am making the list and I love the intro theme. While people have forgotten that expansion, I still think it had one of the best intros in the entire series. WHILE THE SENGOKU JIDAI WAS A TIME OF WAR, THOSE WHO THINK JAPAN HAS NEVER SEEN THE LIKE, HAVE SHORT MEMORIES

Fall of the Samurai remains one of the best expansions in the series, and it even came with its own full soundtrack. I really like the intrusion of western instrumentation, and the music in general has a more careful, wistful tone than that of the main game, which is appropriate for the end of an age. Personal favorite track is Uncle Samurai, for expressing the themes of the expansion very well with the mix of Japanese and Western sounds.

#

Rome II: It's a shame to say because I really do enjoy the game, but I think it has one of the less interesting OSTs in the series. It doesn't help that unlike many other games, it seems to have forgone culturally-distinct themes for music that is applied to everyone in the game. While the original Rome mostly did that too, its soundtrack was much more energetic.

That said, I love the game's main menu theme. It perfectly evokes this old-fashioned swords-and-sandals movie grandeur, starting with a slow duduk and building up to orchestral trumpets.

obsidian ferry
#

Journey to Rome, Part II. Salyak's Embrace, Inferno and a bunch of others. I'm glad there were more liberties taken with the soundtrack for the third Warhammer game compared to what came before and unlike the UI change for the worse, I consider the music a change for the better. Hope we'll get more tracks before the game's lifespan comes to an end. Hoping for some vampire-specific music in particular in the future.

Attila's soundtrack is everything its predecessor isn't. Unapologetically thematic, energetic and as grim as the rest of the game.

Nothing exemplifies the game's vibes better than the main menu theme. A scene of the Huns in shadow, riding through a burning plain, backed by absolutely incredible throat singing.

The Red Horse is another favorite. It's the game's Roman battle theme, and exemplifies why I love this period of Roman history. Drums, grandiose trumpets, militaristic chanting, all the stuff you expect out of the Romans in media, but there is this desperate urgency to it. It's the theme for an empire embattled on all sides, ferociously fighting for its life.

peak horizon
#

Warhammer is sadly another miss in my opinion. It's a shame that it has one of the more forgettable scores in the series, because Attila, the game's immediate predecessor had an excellent OST. The dark fantasy setting ought to have provided for plenty of inspiration, but this seems to have not panned out in practice.

It's not bad per-se, but it lacks energy and variety. A lot of the races share music too, which means that there is very allowance for flavor. You can't make a track that sounds Dwarfen for example if it also has to make sense as a track for the Empire, Bretonnia and Wood Elves. The sequels rectified this, but the races from the original game still suffer.

My favorite track from the game is sadly played all of once, in the Dwarf intro. It was actually reused in the promo videos for Thrones of Decay, and I remember a lot of people asking where it was from because it sounded great and they'd never heard it before. Which is another problem with these games! They can and do have some great music, but a lot of it you will hear all of once, in a trailer or intro and never in-game. Put your good tracks in the game, please! We'd love to hear more of them!

Warhammer II is an improvement on its predecessor. It actually lets each race have its own music. It's not as distinct or interesting as other games in the series, but it was a big step up. Again though, some of the same issues from the original Warhammer abound. Lots of good music in the trailers that never makes it to the game, a lot of low energy tracks that sound very similar, and a general vibe that the music doesn't want to be noticed too much?

Tattered Sails is the best one of course, though I also have a soft spot for the Warden and the Paunch trailer's music.

Thrones of Britannia is a sadly underrated game that I ought to play more of. Unlike the Warhammer series, it seems like the music actually wants to be taken notice of this time around rather than lull the player into sleep. Highlights for me include the adventurous, heroic main menu theme, Glory & Honor with its Ramin Djawadi-esque riffs (listen to it and tell me it wasn't trying to evoke his work on Game of Thrones, it reminds me a lot of the Baratheon music from the show), Show No Mierce with its menacing buildup and moody, Witcher-esque White Shores and the bagpipes for To Valhalla.

Horribly underrated soundtrack, I wish it got the love it deserves.

It's gotta be a toss-up between Death Lullaby and Lakota Lambada from M2TW. Though, I think Death Lullaby narrowly wins.

peak horizon
#

Three Kingdoms is the masterpiece of the series. CA was really firing on all cylinders for that one, and I legitimately have trouble picking which track is my favorite. All of the music is so evocative and dripping with cultural flavor. The trailer songs are almost all based off actual historical poems that are in some way related to the subject! Sometimes they're even written by the people in question! It's so cool I have no words.

Again, it's very hard to pick which ones I like most, but I think I will tentatively say the music from Dong Zhuo's trailer. Excellent trailer with fantastic music. It's literally about Dong Zhuo and the entire thing oozes evil. You listen to it and instantly get in the mood to brutally crush your enemies.

The music from the Accolades trailer is also incredible. Again. How many TW games have music based on poems written by the people you play in them?

Mandate of Heaven is possibly the best trailer for any of these games. Starting slow and mournful, oppressive, then building up to be ecstatic and triumphant as the trailer shows you the Yellow Turbans and the forces rising to oppose them, as Zhang Jue grasps for the sun... It's just so good all around.

Troy is odd and unconventional. I really like the mix of more ambient instrumentation with electronic and metal music. I think it manages to convey this vibe of an age both far distant from now yet simultaneously timeless. Did you know that one of the people doing the music was Jaimie Christopherson? The same guy who did MGR? I bet not. Give me It Has To Be This Way blasting while Achilles hunts down Hector

Highlights for me include the Mass Effect-esque first turn ambient theme, the intense Agamemnon, and actually, does anyone remember this? It was the music that played in these videos they were doing when they were introducing characters. It sounded really Greek. It was fantastic.

#

Warhammer III easily has the best music out of any Warhammer game. Finally, they let the composers breathe and make more interesting stuff. I think that for me, the highlights have to be the Kislev tracks. While I have many problems with how Kislev has panned out as a faction, the music doesn't disappoint. You have the requisite ominous choirs, but also more somber steppe riffs and some wails. It manages to convey Kislev's mixed heritage very well.

#

Lot of bangers stand out to me. M2TW's menu music still gives me chills, the battle loss screen from Shogun 2, 'High Loremaster' from the HE in TWWH2, to name a few.

Far away my favourite has to be 'Death Lullaby' from M2. First time that track came on for me, I was storming a Byzantine fortress with my weary but elite Scottish army, and I was wearing a huge dumb grin for the entire thing. Track is hype af.

Mors Gardens best campaign theme, and Rats of Unusual Size is the best Battle theme.

Also if we include trailer music, then pretty much every trailer music since Hunter and the Beast.

Empire Total War main menu still chills me in the best way possible.
Napoleon's campaign tracks are also quite nice in portraying the bleak contrasts of the period.

the menu music from SHOGUN 1. I used to go to sleep listenign to the slow japanese music with birds in the bg

#

oops, then google "shogun total war 1 menu music"

there was this clip of ravens calling over the music, in shogun 1

#

p dope

#

go play shogun 1, it was worth playing, anyway.

#

bridge fights are miserable murder slogs though lol

#

oh no the bot hates french

#

shogun 2 lost a lot of the actual je ne sais quoi of the first total war. It a bunch of nerds makign math out of they imagination, based vaguely off of what a white nerd read and interpreted from sun tzu

#

it was busted and silly but also a vibe, and they still keep the vibe. which I respect because it's frickin tough to keep to a lane while making a product repeatedly over years

#

play me the ravens crying from shogun 1, if you can find it lol

I don't really focus on music playing these games, but the best from the ones I can recall are: Warhammer I main menu theme (Faith, Steel and Gunpowder), Warhammer III warriors of chaos battle theme and the pirate shanty from the vampire coast.

I love all of the ambient campaign music in Warhammer 3, especially the Kislev and Cathay music, it's very thematic

Quite honestly, I love the entire soundtracks to the original Shogun and Medieval games, plus Rome II. I'm also quickly falling in love with Pharaoh: Dynasty's music -- it's genuinely amazing.
