Hey Josh! Please tell us more about your team. You guys do great work ๐Ÿ‘

Edit: Basically I'm always interested in how teams in such complex games work together to design complete systems. What's your process to design something? How many people are usually needed to work on one mechanic?

is there any chance of Wurrzag's dance animation being used by other Savage Orcs (even if only ones in his army, or perhaps as part of his WAAAGH effects), it also feels like a bit of a shame that he stops dancing when mounted on his boar, any chance that he might one day get an animation change so that he can dance full time?

Hello: Heres my question!

The great thing about wh3 is its faction variety. To show it off more, have you considered increasing interaction between allies? If we could attach an army to an ally's army, as the waagh mechanic allows, then we could help an allied faction with our troops in their battles and fight their enemies. This is a way for us to tell stories in our campaigns, establish more of a sense of a "LIVING" world, and it'd also be perfect for coop campaigns, as instead of having to always give us units, making the ally feel like he's giving away his toys, our ally'd have our own troops there. An example of how awesome this'd be is to send someone to help Belegar to get back his mountain, or joining a beastmen horde with allied norscan warriors for long-distance marauding.

Another path would be the outpost system: let the garrison you put into another town through the outpost be under your control, allowing you to help an ally during a siege. Imagine how epic that'd be, the elven soldiers helping in Couronne, like Haldir from LOTR. Worse case scenario you autoresolve if you don't want to fight those fights. Fights alongside allies, as is, are very rare, which is not very exciting; plus these battles as the "help" would be lower stakes for the assisting player, letting them focus more on the graphics, zooming in, and bask in the glory.

Hello Josh, I know that Bretonnia is meant to have relatively weak melee infantry, but have you considered buffing Foot Squires? You need a tier 4 building to recruit them and they barely get buffs from the tech tree and skill trees. I think that a simple speed buff would already be quite helpful since Bretonnia is such a mobile faciton and Foot Squires are extremely slow with a speed of only 28.

Also give Grail Reliquae a frenzy aura for SP you cowards. ๐Ÿ˜ค

With the chaos dwarfs being released I can say they are my favourite race because I've been waiting for them for so long. Everything goes so well from synergy to effects, especially the economy.

Seeing how the chaos dwarfs brought a whole new type of interactive economy, should we expect future updates to touch upon other economies to make them unique from one another?

Hi Josh! Iโ€™ve always felt like TWWH could benefit from having different character skill mechanics than the ones we have today. Itโ€™s probably not feasible to overhaul now that thereโ€™s so many characters in the game, but if you could rewind time back to the start of WH1โ€™s development and change 1 or 2 things about how character skill trees worked, what would they be?

Hey Josh! Can we hope with each DLC for one of the older very "Vanilla" lords to get their own campaign mechanic with their own UI? For instance for Balthazar Gelt it doesn't really make sense to be involved in Elector Counts mechanic, but would be awesome for him to have Ikit's Lab type of feature, where he can also get Elector Count units in upgrade milestones.

Is this on your radar design-wise?

Also, not really question but more something I'd really love for designers to be aware of: please fix the miscommunication issue between designers/CMs/Playerbase on what does it mean to have a unique LL mechanic. Just faction and lord effects aren't LL mechanics, but ever since wh3 launch they are being advertised as such. It always leads to heightened expectations and disappointment on player-side when you say lord X will have a unique mechanic but he just ends up having a boring "+10% Replenishment" faction effect instead ๐Ÿ˜„

Hi, Josh. So, contrary to some different videogames, the controls, such as casting a spell or ability, or the unit charging, are tied to the animation, as in, the animation must run its course for the spell/ability/action to take place. This implies a focus on the animation rather than responsiveness, which is a typical norm. When this decision was made, was it concerning the engine of the game, or really more of a design/gameplay choice? And if so, what was behind that decision?

Josh: Awww thanks, we certainly do like knowing what we put out is liked by the community! The beauty of being on the DLC team is that we have the opportunity to improve on the original designs, while at the same time adding new features. We look at what's feasible, what adds value, and is just overall fun. Having a spread skillset most certainly helps, being able to commune with others whose knowledge of say the campaign side is vastly superior to mine to see if my design works with their area, while at the same time being able to help them with the areas I know more about. Working with the crazy talented art, animation, audio, and QA teams to bring the content to life as you see it before you are the end result! I hope that answers everything ๐Ÿ™‚

Josh: We definitely look at quite a few different areas to see if they can be improved, and if there is any need for improvement. We do have a lot of ideas when we got into research, documenting, and prototyping but sadly everything has a cost associated with it. Sometimes we aren't able to go forward because the circumstances don't permit it, but we make due and hopefully, that's reflected positively within the product ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you have any plans for re-using the Cathay caravan mechanic for older factions that logically would trade like that, such as high elves, empire or dwarves? I'd like to ask if you might consider it, because it just adds value to all the factions that could have it.

The caravans mechanic serves MANY purposes in a meta-sense; and in-universe it also makes complete sense, but mainly, as a player though, beyond the "lore", it has 2 clear benefits to have the caravan mechanic that make it hard for me to not feel like I'm missing out by choosing a faction that doesn't have caravans: that sense of having "more to do", as it's something to do in between turns that otherwise might be dull, like turn skip to finish a construction. It helps fill a gap. Plus, it allows us to tell more stories; because suddenly we have a caravan fighting vampires by Sylvania for example, which is pretty cool in of itself, as you get to explore the world more.

Josh: Both are pretty important, the tabletop has established rules regarding existing abilities so I generally see how we can translate that over to work in Total War, along with keeping faithful to the content as much as I can. Existing abilities are always a good reference regarding balance and how they generally work in battles, but also a demonstration of what we can do with the current tech. Generally, it's always nice to experiment and see if we can go further with it.

Is there much discussion about reworking older races to incorporate new unit ability implementation that can use some of the newer design ideas based around thresholds (examples being kill counts or time spent in melee) or any of the other really great ideas seen with wh3 races and the CoC DLC (another example being Cathay harmony or the Chaos Dwarf contempt being adapted to Lizardmen Skink/Kroxigor relationship)?

Josh: Man that nostalgia slapped me proper. Truth be told I've always felt the skill tree was somewhat limiting in regards to what could be put on there, you risk a certain amount of bloat, and having to scroll endlessly to view everything can be a chore too. I probably would've gone down the classic MMO skill tree progression route, and maybe open it up a bit more in regards to what you can do (e.g. evolve certain abilities, allow for greater customisation). It might've worked well in some areas, but it probably wouldn't have been as straightforward as the current iteration is.

I very much appreciate the changes made to Skill trees!
I used to get eye strain and feel sick from flicking between the upgrade versions of skills before this latest skill tree update, so thank you.

Any idea if it'll be made easier to see what an upgrade to a skill does without flicking between the two versions?
(This would SO reduce the turn time I spend checking skills in multiplayer campaigns!)

Thanks!

Can we have the Champions of Chaos LLs and Sigvald as dual races ? The community was obviously very split about where to put those LLs and I think having them playable either as Warriors of Chaos or their respective Monogods before you start your campaign would be a good way to make both sides satisfied as well as adressing the issue that Monogods currently only have a single faction to pick which offers poor replayability for those races. If we get to have this choice for custom battles we should in my opinion also get to have this choice for campaign.

Prismatic amplifier is an arcane item of blue (very rare?) rarity with 33s of duration and 90s of cooldown. But it gives 16% recharge rate. Could Game 1 races (cough, Bretonnia, cough) get a buff to their "unique" items? Hi Josh, I don't know if you can give an answer about this as I'm not certain if it's off topic. Units balance is obviously essential for multiplayer but is there any plans to have a bit of a better balance on the campaign map ? I have felt that lots of the recent content and reworks from the DLC team had a lot of powercreep which can make the game trivial with some campaigns, for example Warriors of Chaos had an excellent reworks all the new mechanics are great and very thematic but despite having 8 different campaigns they are all super easy to play which isn't inherently wrong but as someone that enjoys tough campaigns I'd like to have some challenge playing the newer content too. I think each race in the game should at least have one tough campaign and one easy campaign to try to satisfy everyone and currently some races have only tough campaigns while others have only very easy ones.

total war warhammer 2 was a fantastic game overall but a few of the starting factions suffered heavily from 'feature creep' with more abilties, tricks and so forth then most other factions.

Whilst its awesome having so many options for factions its gotten to the point where some (mainly skaven and high elves imho) have become a major chore to deal with especially in campaign.

Josh: We have data that are drawn from the multiplayer side regarding things like how many times this unit has been picked, their matchups, and overall win rate. With the campaign, you have external factors that affect this (e.g. the player will be inclined to choose a unit whose upkeep has been lowered), and that could distort the results we see on our side. Sadly there's a whole lot more to it which would require more time for a concrete answer. But we definitely don't neglect the campaign balance, please do keep voicing your feedback and bringing it to our attention ๐Ÿ™‚

Josh: Greetings fellow survivor of the Josh fight.

With Chaos Dwarves it was a mixture, I was mostly focused on battles with unit and unit ability design and implementations. I also dived into the campaign side to create ancillaries and work on some skill trees (Ulrika for example).

It was definitely an interesting project with its own challenges, though, some of the work I did eased the load on others and allowed them to focus on areas and get them sorted. Knowing that I had that impact is something I'm definitely proud of.

I love thรฉ abilities you guys have made there are some very cool creative ones!! They are so fun to make themed builds with. My question is can we expect AOE abilities on infantry/archers to get larger specifically from the first two games. I think the switch to ultra size didnโ€™t account for the units getting bigger and a lot of the AOE abilities canโ€™t reach very far outside of a outstretched unit. Similar to how Cathay harmony was too small at launch. A example would be the high elf ROR scions of mythland when stretched out their 10% wardsave only barely reaches their outer models. I love the idea of them buffing their allys but they would have to be on top of each other or really compact to give the buffs.
