Model: Legion 5i 15IAH7H (i5 12500H and RTX 3060)
Describe the issue: Overheating and thermal throttling
What have you tried already?: Cleaning and re-pasting
When did it start producing the issue?: About 2-3 months ago maybe
Did you install new drivers or software?: Just windows, Nvidia graphics, and one bios update
Images: yes

I tried playing multiple games (fortnite, gta 5, sea of thieves..) it overheats and throttles in all. cpu easily hits highs 90s and sometimes constant 97 and the gpu 86-88. I unfortunately do not have access to PTM7950. So any advice or help? Also mine is out of warranty by about 2 months.

that's your only real choice

#

if you want lower temps

#

find a way to procure it

#

you shouldn't've repasted anyway

#

you could've probably fixed the issue with original paste, but by cleaning the fans

#

I did, i just cleaned the fans, it didn't work. So then i decided to open up the heatsink, the original paste had dried up. So I used the paste I had at hand (borrowed from a friend), the noctua nth1.

#

Is there any i could lower the temps by software? Like maybe disabling boost or undervolting?

thorny quest
#

your original paste had not "dried up" unless you got it from someone who had repasted previously

#

i suggest you find a means of getting ptm7950 in your country

#

maybe via a global reseller or shipment forwarding like ebuy7 or whatever

I bought the laptop brand new, almost a month after launch. So i doubt the repasting.

#

Alright, I will try getting ptm. Isnt there any other way?

thorny quest
#

not rly

winged hawk
#

So I ran cinebench r23 and was checking temps in hwinfo.
Only my p core 3 is throttling (96-97°c). Rest all are within 90°c. Some even below 80°c

#

Also this was during multi-core test. The single core run showed no throttling and temps below 80°c

#

Why is that only the p core 3 is throttling?

Get ptm from moddiy

#

They shipped to me

#

And literally almost no one ships here so

#

Took 3 weeks but hey

thorny quest
#

it's hotter than the rest

#

so it throttles the cpu before the other cores

#

just get ptm dude

#

save yourself the headache

winged hawk
#

Alright, I will what I can do to get my hands on the ptm

#

If I give my laptop to a Lenovo authorised service centre, will they replace the paste with ptm 7950?
Also I don't have warranty.

thorny quest
#

you'd have to get a heatsink replacement

#

thats the only time lenovo will give ptm

winged hawk
#

how much will that cost me

thorny quest
#

just get ptm7950 and save yourself the headache

#

i dont think you can even buy a heatsink from lenovo

winged hawk
#

The thing is even a small piece of ptm costs me about 100 usd. And that too will take months to come

#

Atleast a month tbh

#

So I thought maybe if i service the laptop in alenovo centre they might replace the paste or replace the heatsink incase it's faulty.

#

Because despite cleaning and using a good thermal paste (noctua) it is overheating a lot.

for laptops

Oh damn. Even the newer ones?
