Model: Lenovo Legion 5 | 15ACH6H
Describe the issue: I am getting -20W discharge rate.
What have you tried already?: Using Kuri's Power Plan, Quiet Mode, etc.
When did it start producing the issue: Since I got the Laptop.
Did you install new drivers or software?: I installed the newest recommended NVidia driver, but doesn't matter much as I am using Hybrid Mode.
Can you provide images/videos to show us the issue:
#How do I improve battery life?

Bump
The thing that I did on my 15ach6h was to put the laptop on battery saver all the time, switch the screen to 60hz by adding it with CRU (Custom resolution utility) and quiet mode. I think I get around 7 hours or 8 when full charged
@frigid storm could you screenshot your llt home page
with everything switched to battery life settings
how do i get 10 hours
I dont think you can get 10 hours out of the laptop
I am more than happy if I have 6 hours projected
Some people in discord said to use the laptop more to get it be more accurate
Even on mine it fluctuates alot if I open a browser and check immediately it says that it should last 4 hours but if I start to watch something I think it gets to 6 again
Dont pay much attention to the remaining battery just use it
I think it's just like phones
It needs to know your workflow
Ah fair
It still has an algorithm which puts some apps in eco mode or whatever its called
I saw that some apps started to stay in eco mode most of the time
Nice well I started to not watch the remaining battery all the time i just use it
Only when it gets empty but it didn't happen yet
I would take a look randomly but for me its perfect compared to what i had before
I can get 10 hours with my I7
Well it depends on what you do
If i have discord open and multipe tabs and do some coding, il probably only hit 6 hours or so
But just having a pdf open en using Word, it should last about 10 hours easily
do you use hybrid mode?
yeah
no issues afyer using the cru?
I heard that its possible to lower the refresh rate outside hybrid mode, but I don't know if that'd be better
nah it's all good for now
worst case is you can get a black screen but if you changed the resolution in windows it would come back to normal
that happens if you didnt add the resolution the right way
you have to change the resolution?
so when you add the 60 hz option in oder to use it you have to change refresh rate
and I set an action in lenovo toolkit to change in 60hz whenever I disconnect the power cord
gotcha, how long have you used it? and do you ever switch off hybrid mode?
uuh almost a month i think and yeah
i mostly have my laptop plugged so i turned off hybrid mode
since i use the laptop screen for gaming
cool, thanks, I think I'll try it out and tweak it
no worries just take a look in the knowledge-base channel
if you need help you can dm me
thanks
so I tried it out, and I noticed that the setting doesn't stay if I enter a game and exit it, the display will reset to 165. have you had that issue?
hmmm not really at least I dont remember something like this
it seems to occur when booting a game in hybrid mode (in this instance minecraft) while the laptop is plugged into a power source, the display changes, and when the game closes there some kind of reset that makes the display change back to the original framerate
setting integrated as my default gpu in the Nvidia control panel stops the switch, but I'm wondering if this is normal?
that's not the refresh rate it's just the change in which gpu's running your display
yeah that makes sense, should I change any settings? currently I just put the default mode as integrated graphics.
set it to automatic
best battery when you're not playing, best performance when you're playing
otherwise if you set it to igpu you'll have a bottleneck
did you set the 60hz on hybrid mode?
you can't tie refresh rates to gpu modes
you could script them in legion toolkit to 165hz on power and 60 on battery
yes thats correct but since the gpu mode changes
the refresh rates change too
what i mean is that i set the 60hz when i used the dedicated gpu only
and when i changed on hybrid i lost the 60 hz
and i had to add it again
yes, I had used the cru as described, restarted then changed to 60 in the settings
thats what I had it set to before that causes the switch of the gpu
perhaps I should just set to integrated graphic the specific games that I'd play when I'm in hybrid mode?
you shouldn't need to do it
if you have battery saver
windows should know that you dont want to use the dgpu
i played tft on battery and it didnt run on the dgpu
yeah, so when I set Nvidia control panel default to integrated, things still run on the nvidia gpu, but the display doesn't switch
in this menu you should have an option to choose the integrated gpu
i dont have it since i am on dgpu mode
yeah thats normal behavior
global settings
oh
you have to kill the apps with lenovo legion toolkit
or close them one by one
i dont know about this option i dont remember having it
I think it's fine the current way I set it up, I have more battery life and I don't get the weird display switching, which I guess is a feature of hybrid mode.
I'll just have to change settings manually any time I want to play a game at full power.
the switching happens on games that nvidia thinks you need the full power of the dgpu
thats how things work
i didnt fiddle with it
yeah, my only issue with it is that the refresh rate doesn't stay set if I let the setting be automatic for those scenarios
to clarify, when the game opens the display changes gpu and the refresh rate goes from 60 to 65, then when the game closes the display changes back and for some reason resets to 165, I confirmed with ufotest and checking the settings
I think some of the details might have been mixed up
try to restart on dedicated gpu and set the refresh rate as well
i had to do it two times
first for dgpu second for igpu
hmm i see
still try to add the 60hz setting when using only the dgpu
and try it again
yeah, I plan to do more tests, I think I did change the setting back the 1st time 1 saw the issue while the display had switch to dgpu
I think I ended up with a 30 refresh rate
nah you should just leave it at automatic for the best performance/battery life
that's for rendering the game not outputting to the display
they're both separate things
you should set it to dgpu for games and igpu for lighter games and normal work apps
65?
you sure that's refresh rate and not fps?
just set it to automatic for both should do the job just fine
and then configure individual games to use igpu if they aren't
yeah i know that
and you are right
about the configuring
welp then just do this should fix it
lemme double check this, do I need to remove the current setting and add it again using cru or do I just run restart64 again while in hybrid mode?
You have to add twice
Once in hybrid
And another on dedicated
That's what i did at least
I saw the config doesn't transfer over the display modes
that could work as a solution, I'll have to test it and the timing
I'll try that, but I don't remember which mode I added it in. what should I do specifically? restart64 or add an extra 60hz option?
Restart64 only restard the drivers
So windows can see the new resolution/refresh rate
Try to boot in both hybrid in dedicated
And check if you have 60hz
In both
gotcha
hybrid and dedicated DOES NOT link to your refresh rate
so doesn't resolution
The display itself has a different ID
In the respective modes
It has a different name altogether
wdym i don't face that issue
well just use legion toolkit to change stuff it should take care of all of that for you
It's a more niche thing you cant really see it in windows
Its more easy on linux
The display of the laptop has a different name and ID when you change Modes
In hybrid it's internal display and Dedicated its AU something something
I dont remember exactly
They function the same but windows thinks you have another display
nvidea can control refresh rate in dedicated mode
Yeah llt should let you change refresh rates regardless
so you won't have to deal with all this just to change your refresh rate/resolution
I can show you my config for the AC
thats how i have it set
and you should not worry about it anymore
quiet forr battery and balanced for connected
you won't need performance all the time
and keep your battery on conservation at all times
thing does not last if you don't
you'll burn through longevity
i sometimes turn it off if I know I will use it more on battery
is always on usb bad for battery?
it only limits your max percentage
reduces battery life
unless you plan on using your legion as a power bank then best to keep it off
it's more of a temporary setting to me
I know
yeah so keeping conservation on is no harm
that's why i have it set back to conservation every time i plug in
:)))))
its okay
you dont need to put conservation when you disconnect the charger
i just put it when i plug it so I dont forget
you might as well remove the command block from there
since it's always on
battery's still capped at 80 if you disable it anyways
getting to full charge manually and having it reset to charge in conservation could be good
that's what I did there
When I have to go to uni and I dont want to bring the charger
I just let it charge full
yeah but fully charging reduces longevity
fully charging and discharging help the laptop figure out the max discharge
and then when I come back home and plug it in it will revert to conservation
yeah I typically stay in conservation, I definitely will now since my laptop can last 2 more hours off 60
wait discharge rate remains the same tho
welp that's fine then
keep conservation on at all times and forget
I mean after I did the quiet mode and refresh rate changes
I got better battery life and don't have much reason to go 100 outside battery diagnostics
well gg then
gg, btw is underwatting fine? I sometimes charge at 65w with usb c?
I get a warning but the manual says it's supported wattage
Idk I don't have any usb c chargers
It should be fine tho
From my knowledge that shouldn't stress the battery in any way
You can ask that in #questions
Someone has to know something
Sure
charges slower nothing else
and you can't use your gpu cause you'll end up discharging even on wall
so you'll have to use your battery config for lower wattage chargers
for display mode, should I be in optimus or auto select?
auto select i would say
yes
shouldn't suck power when not playing games, shouldn't have igpu bottlenecks while playing games
I think I solved the issue 65 refresh rate issue I had (or percieved issue)
The browser running the ufo test is showing the innacurate result because it's running on a separate gpu than the current mode
Reopening the browser shows the correct result (I think since that's what makes the most sense)
Nice tips from here , thanks alot this really helped me save power
