My week old Legion 5i pro doesn't want to wake from sleep mode. I first noticed it 2 days after I got the laptop when it was left idle and went into sleep mode it won't wake up the keyboard and mouse lights up and I'm pretty sure the computer is on but the screen stays black. I read on here to turn the laptop off unplug the power cord and hold the power button for 60 seconds so I did that and it fixed the issue for 3 days. Until last night it happened again before I went to bed I wasn't able to wake it from sleep and had to hold the power button to shut it down like before. I did add a second SSD but this issue was happening before I added it and I did the "fix" after so I don't believe that's related. I did update everything including my BIOS the day I got the laptop. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Can you try and load BIOS defaults and show me where it says Networking in Standby disabled
Any updates on this? I've had a similar issue when trying to wake my laptop from hibernation. Sometimes it will return to the login screen, but I'm often forced to force a shutdown and reboot it. I've had occasional luck running through the Power Plans, opening and closing the lid a few times, and pressing the power button, but a laptop this expensive should readily wake up every time.
Same issue. Laptop won't shut down or go into a sleep mode. It becomes completely unresponsive and the only solution is to hold the power button down for 5 seconds.
@viral hemlock @median grotto
Try
- Disabling Networking in Standby by using powersettingsexplorer or from #1020285176531669012
- Resetting BIOS to defaults (Load Defaults)
- EC reset
@little wing I found this guide: https://discordapp.com/channels/761178912230473768/1029845133291687966 in the knowledge base
However, I don't have modern standby (S0 Low Power Idle), see attached screenshot
Mine doesn't have the S0 mode either.
@median grotto which graphics card do you have? OP has a 3070 and mine is a 3070 Ti, so I'm wondering if it has anything to do with that series.
3070
@late sail Did you manage to resolve anything? Did you return the device?
S3 sleep is not supported by win 11 I guess, but that's the best sleep mode, you can watch LTT video on it.
Try updating the BIOS
Check if you have S3 sleep enabled in BIOS because Linux has support for it and I think some BIOS have option to enable S3 by entering advanced BIOS menu, like IdeaPad and ThinkPad have it.
Try disabling S3 sleep and it'll move to modern standby (S0) state
There is an advanced BIOS where you can try disabling S3 sleep.
From what I read online that it is now not possible to enter advanced BIOS on 2022 legion. Because Lenovo has permanently locked it.
that is not entirely true. you still can access the advanced BIOS with a tweak made by @mild aspen. check out #bios-fd
You can for open advanced for AMD and unlock it for Intel
for basically any version so far
I have the same issue and in fact made a post with a video documenting it
I've just tried to disable all sleep, hibernate, fast startup options. I just want to be able to shut down the laptop safely without having to hold the power button in. Restarting works just fine, the laptop does a full power cycle and switches off. I just can't get it to switch off entirely without holding the power button. And I've tried Shift + Shut down as well, to no avail.
Are all laptops in question with AMD CPUs?
Intel, 12th Gen
Legion 5 Pro?
Yess
In BIOS, is your Secure Boot On?
Yes, I have tried to switch it off in the past, but I can give it another go if you think it might help? Especially with all the sleep modes disabled now
Can you Load Defaults in BIOS
and then open powersettingsexplorer
you can google it
its an app that shows you power plan options
Brb, will restart and restore BIOS to defaults
Take your time
Got the app, looks nice
no rush
Done
When you are in Windows, open the app and send screen
Do you have power plans? or just Balanced?
Networking Connectivity in Standby
click on it
put on Disabled for AC and DC
hit save
IF you add more power plans, make sure to do that for all of them
When you do that
What mode are you in? Hybrid?
I think I had already disabled it in the policy manager prior
Hybrid yes
No, should it be?
Try it like this
- Laptop boots up, on battery
- Open any app
- Click on power button
Does it kill screen?
Is the power button breathing?
Did it stay instead of breathing?
Did it change color?
After clicking on button, wait for 15s
Will reboot now, using restart
And then follow the steps brb
The power button on the laptop I presume yes?
Yes, there is no other power button
You want sleep
Is it not shutting down when you hit shut down?
lol I don't use sleep
...
You are not using sleep because you cant get it to wake up
The whole point of my guide is to pinpoint what went wrong for sleep/wake up
I had the same situation with Slim
made it work as it should
sleeps and shuts down as it always did
Why would it shut down
Power button serves three usages
- Power on
- Sleep on click
- Shut down on hold
Why wouldn't?
Because its a laptop my guy
It starts to shut down when I click shut down in the Windows menu or press the power button
Windows then shows me the shutting down message, the screen goes black, the Num Lock key light goes off, the keyboard backlight stays on, the fans stay on, the power button LED stays on and the laptop is still on...
If sleep would work, and I could wake from sleep, that'd be great too, but also requesting the laptop to sleep will have the same effects, so I thought the problem was related to the laptop going into some kind of sleep state and freezing up.
I guess shutdown is broken
Because regardless of whether I choose Sleep or Shut Down, the same behavior occurs, and the laptop becomes unresponsive
I have the same problem, laptop does not wake from sleep
The post you took over is wake up
not shutdown
You need a post for shut down and maybe get it on video
I mean, I made a post for both: https://discord.com/channels/761178912230473768/1054838771402686514
Ill try to replicate
But this one got responses
I can add a video
@sonic stream posted a video already tho: #1055385883852951602 message
You could also enable Modern Standby using SREP but that requires a reinstall of Windows + loading defaults and disabling networking connectivity to see if it sleep correctly
I see no reason as to why 12th gen would have S3 sleep when its capable of Modern Standby
I don't necessarily want to modify the BIOS more than flashing a different stock version onto it as the device is still under warranty and premium support... They can only get to it after Christmas though, which is why I posted for advice/tips/ideas on Discord as to why the device is behaving as it is.
Yes
Right... SREP is just a tool that lets you have advanced access
Would using SREP void the warranty?
If you wish to, try it
No
They cant know you changed anything, easy to revert settings you change by loading defaults
Just dont touch voltages and you are golden
On the other note, If you have a spare USB, you could try a live booting different Linux distro like Manjaro and see if everything works normally.. and verify that there are no issues with the hardware.
This is 99% no hardware issue but bad Sleep usage correlated to BIOS being set to S3 instead of Modern
or any other software thing - like gpu drivers
Yeah I thought that too, but I wasn't sure about entering advanced BIOS was allowed in latest legion..
Yeah
Can't wait to get my Legion, Lenovo is just delaying my custom order 😐
Great support @little wing I hope he'll be able to resolve it.
Trying everything I have in my knowledge
Else we wait for proper BIOS update
you could do that before anything else really
Is he using latest BIOS?
I will try to check what Sleep usage is set using the Advanced BIOS tool
I am currently using J2CN40WW
When I received the laptop, the problem was not there, perhaps a Windows update bugged it
I've tried the latest BIOS version from Lenovo as well, but the problem persists, that's why I backflashed to J2CN40WW
I mean, should I try to set it to Modern Standby instead in the advanced BIOS settings?
Also, thank you for the input
I'm surprised why lenovo shipped BIOS without enabling modern standby.. I hope my laptop laptop comes with S3 enabled so it would be a breeze to setup sleep in Linux.
It can be a bad setting for BIOS or not enough testing done
@little wing at least for now resetting bios to default seems to have fixed it
I'll update if the problems returns, which it has in the past
also fyi I have bios version J2CN43WW
Is modern standby(S0) enabled now?
I dont think that user changed it
Donald was supposed to do that
but it seems its easy to fix
same as Slim
I can't figure out SREP right now and to be honest, I've been trying to find a solution for this issue for weeks now and I'm just waiting until after Christmas to phone up Customer Support. If they don't just replace the unit, I'll just request a refund
Try 43WW and load defaults
Same issue on 5 pro
I've already tried that. And the customer support on the Lenovo Forums said I should upgrade to the 46ww 🤷♂️
Try different OS, any Arch based distros like Manjaro or Ubuntu based Pop OS have latest kernel and should support your laptop hardware. See if the issue still persists
I think you can also try installing Windows 10.
I'm not sure what is causing issues with the shutdown
Fixed the issue. Motherboard replacement was necessary.
Sleep and shut down work correctly now.
Hardware fault
what hardware was at fault? the whole mobo?
Probably some component in the power management module on the motherboard
