I've been reading about them and they are fascinating. The way their colours can be a result of the prey they have eaten and the fact that their prey's poison can then be excreted by them to keep them safe. It's amazing. You've probably run into this Blue Glaucous. It eats jellyfish and becomes poisonous.

Cow Week is here! Every day there will be a picture and a cow fact.

First up is a picture Splendor sent me of one of my favourite breeds. A Scottish Highland cow with her calf.

There are horned cattle and polled cattle. Highlands are, of course, an example of a horned breed. Simply put, polled refers to cattle that do not have horns. They are known as polled because the top of a cow's head between the ears is called a "poll". Some breeds have been bred to be polled. Angus are an example of that.

Day 2: Galloway
Galloway cattle are another Scottish breed. They come in the 4 types below. Each of these come in three colours: black, red and dun.

Cows have 32 teeth. The same number as humans have, but unlike humans they have no upper front teeth. Instead they have hardened skin known as a dental plate. When cows eat they use their tongues (which are rough like sandpaper) to wrap the grass and their lower teeth help cut it. They do very little chewing before swallowing. Instead their rumen (one of the four parts of a cow's stomach) does much of the digesting work by fermenting the grass. The cow then regurgitates food from the rumen and chews it more thoroughly. That soft fermented food is referred to as cud. When you see a cow laying, jaw working side to side they are chewing their cud, which they do for about 8 hours a day.

They use their tongue 😛 like fingers to feel objects to try to figure out what they are and what they do too. So they lick radios, fencing tools, the back of your head… I love the little white calf. Those black ears are so cute.

Today's breed is the Belgian Blue. These guys look the way they do because they have a gene that causes double muscling. In other breeds this shows up in (rarely) it is considered a defect. The problem with this breed is they can have heart issues and be unable to give birth without assistance.

Random cow fact: Cows can easily walk up stairs but can't easily walk down them. Their knees, weight distribution and how their eyes work make it hard for them.

Cow Week Day 4:
Jersey Cow
A smaller milking breed the Jersey is popular especially for smaller dairies and family farms. They have quiet temperaments, and beautiful eyes.

Cow Fact: Cows have nearly 360° vision, with a blind spot right at their tail. BUT they suck at depth perception. They mostly have monocular vision, except about a 25°-30° area directly in front of them that they do have binocular vision. However, their eye muscles are loose so their eyes move slowly. It takes them time to focus properly and judge just what something is. A shadow on the ground can look like a cavernous pit to them. They dont know how deep it is unless given time to study it. What can sometimes be attributed to stubbornness is often just them needing time to see their environment properly.

Cow Week Day 5:
Do cows sweat?

Yes, but only about 10% as much as we humans do. They rely on shade and if they have access, water sources, like ponds to stay cool.

Horned cattle like these two, Watusi from Africa and Texas Longhorn, who live In hot climates have another stay cool trick. Their horns work like a radiator. Inside the horns is a pattern of vessels like a honeycomb, the blood goes in, circulates which cools it and then goes back into the body at a cooler temperature than it entered the horns.

Cow Week Day 6:
Zebu

There are two sub-species of cattle. The first is known as Bos Taurus Taurus. The Second is Bos Taurus Indicus. Bos being the genus from Latin meaning cattle. Taurus means bull in Latin. Indicus means of India. Usually though they are just referred to as Bos Taurus which originate from Europe and have no hump and Bos Indicus, coming for India with a hump. The loose skin helps the Indcus cattle to produce more sweat than the average cow helping them stay cooler. The floppy ears help dissipate heat. Their humps almost look like a camel hump but are not. They don't store water, but are made up of muscle, fat, and enlarged vertebrae. They have lots of blood vessels though so probably work like horns to help control body temperature.

Cow Fact: Cow noses are like fingerprints, unique to each cow.

I saved my favourite breed of cow for our final day of Cow Week.
Red Angus
This breed thrives in colder climates (like Canada) thanks to their thick hair coats, tight skin (less heat loss), and lots of fat (also helps the beef be super tasty). The calves are tough and even when born in -30 weather will stand right up to eat and play. The picture I am sharing is my favourite cow. She is highly intelligent, even for a cow. Yup, you read that right, most cows are not stupid animals, some are dumber than posts but let's face it, stupidity happens in humans too. Cows are very curious, great problem solvers, have almost perfect memories, complex social structures (they can hold grudges for years), can identify humans and animals by voice or appearance. They communicate with each other through varied moos but can also learn human language. They genuinely like humans when treated well. Studies show milk cows produce more milk when their favourite person is around. Their heart beats slow and they are more relaxed when an owner that they like is with them, especially if they are talking or singing to them.

Cow Fact: Cows have about 25,000 taste buds - 2 to 3 times more than humans do. It helps them distinguish between poisonous and safe plants while grazing. It also explains why my girl is enjoying her Kit Kat so much.

Thanks @Splendor for letting me take over the channel for a week and thanks to those of you who came and read them. Cows have been used for food, labour, transport, heat (the body heat they give off is amazing), clothing, medicines, building materials, and companionship. Our world would not be the same without these magnificent animals.

I just wanted to rectify that camel humps also dont store water, but similarly would store fat and other nutrients.

Camels drink a lot of water at once (200 Liters or 50 gallons in 3 minutes) and have a longer intestinal tract than sheep or cows. They reabsorb water in the elongated small intestine to ensure that they secrete as little as possible.
All this water is stored in their body, but more specifically in their blood, where the blood cells can expand to 240% of their original size to allow for a higher concentration of water, as opposed to the 150% in other animals.

Also, i once saw Bear Grylls open a camel's belly only to drink the water from its contents. Gross, but yeah, you can apparently extract liquids from the 'being digested' food. 🙂

So I tell it the base creature(in this case the sea horse) and I give it an Affinity. I have it provided a very elaborate description that is made for AI Generation. I then plug that into the AI generator.

The problem is a sea horse is already too alien like. And if you deviate from the orgional creature the images just look bad. And I actually did use the scientific name as well and it didn't help.

But if we say I want a Sea horse with spikes and tail that looks like a sword or something mabe we can just manually come up with an idea. Do you have a specific idea of how a sea horse would look as an illuvial?

I got an email a little while ago for Pokemon Art Contest that is hosted every year and super fun but lacks the Creativity of coming up with a new Pokemon (or in our case Illuvial)

Part #1 - Design an Illuvial like the "Last Illuvial Contest"
Part #2 - 3 to 5 of the Finalists are shared for the community to come up with names, classes & typing

Anyways - just a thought!

Also - i would love to see future illuvials using "Countries Animals" for the lines and using the flags as the "color pallet" for inspiration.

Yes caveman and I have discussed this further up here. We also discussed how this channel is a thread so it gets very low new traffic. The whole idea of this channel originally was to ask for it to be a permanent channel where the community could suggest new illuvials and also to have a repository of inspiration for the team to access easily. In keeping with illuviums core creature creation ethos of finding rare and endangered or extinct creatures to use as the base. The art comp that illuvium ran over a year ago was lots of fun.

Yeah, I think those of us born into it just realize it's the way it is. You grow up knowing the calf you are patting will be on your table one day. Although, I have had many, many tears over the years. It isn't easy. But, I try to do my best to give my animals a good life that they wouldn't have if it weren't for the fact they will feed people.

I am not an expert in the game but here are some examples of new Illuvials good for PVP that have occurred to me in the shower:

• Spider: in omega it attacks with each leg to a different flank. It can attack in front with the front legs, to the sides and back (to defend the rogues) at the same time.

• Kangaroo: in omega, 1-2 extra (small) marsupials come out of its pouch that will move autonomously from then on. At each omega, accumulate units (kangaroos with boxing gloves?).

• Pufferfish: it starts small but in omega it gets bigger and bigger and more powerful.

• Peacock: in omega it unfolds its tail and blocks all the weapons that will pass through it, both weapons shots, psion shots, as well as units that move across the board.

• Parrot: in omega it imitates the last omega it has received and can even absorb the enemy's classes and affinities.

Fruit Bat

I went and was a Zookeeper for a Day as a birthday gift one year. I really didn't want to have anything to do with the bats but I ended up loving them. This was my favourite bat. He had no fear of the new person and happily ate fruit out of my hand. He did however fall on my head at one point but his clumsiness just made him more endearing. ❤️

It was the best, an experience I will never forget. I fed gorillas yogurt with a spoon, cleaned a hippos teeth and fed them watermelons, patted giraffes, fed lions and took care of snakes, tortoises and bats.

This guy is a desert stink beetle. I would have it be the opposite of Ebb, as it emits an odour that has negative health effects on the opposing team. Similar to Ebb it affects more of the team at each stage. It's name is Eleodes osculans, or commonly known as Wooly Darkling Beetle.

This guys is great too. Here is a quote from National Geographic site- "Bombardier beetles have the infamous ability to synthesize and release rapid bursts of stinky, burning-hot liquid from their rear ends. These noxious emissions can kill other insects, or startle potential predators into backing off."

I mean this guy just creates itself.
