@split lintel @narrow junco After hearing Kieran's response to Caveman's question about why they launched when they did, where he directly said the current community would be way more forgiving, I feel even more confident that I'm on the right track with my "theory" I mentioned in the comment thread of the AMA. It seems clear to me that Illuvium labs knew the game was not even close to ready, but made a calculated decision to launch on main-net with minimal marketing for a few key reasons:

1. You can't test the economy in alpha. you need people actually spending money to see what works, what doesn't, what people hate, etc. They needed this info with enough time to adjust things before "real launch". However you can't tell people that you are doing this, or else they won't spend the same amount of money or play the same way.

2. they needed to see where the bugs show up with minting and whatnot. Again you can't do this easily in an alpha. Also in terms of fighting bots, those don't exist if you aren't on main-net, so they need to go on main-net to see where/how bots show up.

3. it lets them understand what their priority needs to be, because they get direct community feedback on which features are the biggest glaring issues in the game. This allows them to better calibrate the prioritization of which features MUST be ready for the "real launch".

4. It allows them to do a sneaky amount of "fundraising". Idk the exact numbers, but Illuvium labs is getting money in the door right now from the loyal captive audience of existing players, stakers, and land holders, despite the game being just OK. This helps them extend runway without having to actually go fundraise

All in all I actually see how this is a smart business strategy. It would be very hard to get the launch of a game like this exactly right on the first try. I really hope they are careful to not overly abuse the loyal community, as that could backfire. Fingers crossed for the next 6 months.

Was always communicated that there are bugs and balancing the economy needs to be done post launch, which seems pretty obvious to me and to you aswell as you say.
with playing early you automatically enter a risky thing. It can either play out for you or you might play/buy for to expensive prices.

I will say, I don't know if it was better to launch when we did or if holding off would be better and then dumping the full marketing budget.

Personally feel it still launched a little to early. We didn't have a proper end game set up, airdrop was pressuring player behavior in the wrong way, and the overworld lore and progression were missing.

With that being said, the current path allows for more time to iterate and gain community feedback and a lot of the other ideas you brought up. We also don't know how the team was doing internally and maybe this was all they could push before needing a well deserved break. They are making 3 games at a high quality that even AAA studios have struggled to accomplish in the same time frame.

If we look at the burn report we still have plenty of time to iterate and spend on marketing. We will be successful, just need to hold on and support each other and the team

Very well said. I kind of was listing this out to document my own realizations for some of the logic behind launching when they did. At first I could not fathom why they would and was frustrated. Especially in the context of the fuel economy and balancing (or lack there of) in zero. Now I’m coming to see it was likely a complicated decisions with many pros and cons.

I actually doubt that the company values feedback. We have massive threads about every game, and none have been addressed since pre-seasons 1 and 2. Now they've removed milestones, the only concept that made competitiveness dependent on how much you wanted to spend on the game, and replaced them with poorly designed dailies and weeklies. Despite 2.5 months of feedback on mission ideas, NONE of them were implemented.

On top of that, there are countless unresolved problems across all games (economics, gameplay loop, and lack of overall content). IlVZ was nerfed into oblivion, illuvials are worth fractions of a cent, and I don't see how this can be fixed without a massive overhaul of the entire system and the involvement of a Web3 economic specialist. There are no real incentives to play the game unless you're interested in missions like "Fight 12 encounters in Stage 0," "play 3 games in training mode," or even worse, missions that are clearly misleading (inducement to error) and offensive to anyone with more than 2 brain cells.

I really feel hooked by the IP -- the design and concept of the project seem groundbreaking—but the poor management of game concepts is so bad that I can't even imagine how we'll turn this around without making a complete 180 from the current direction.

Illuvials being worth cents is a real issue. At present we have such a massive supply at varying stats. Fusing at least attempts to burn some of those excess illuvials, but it does nothing to get around those crazy loads of bad stat illuvials.

Look I understand that sentiment. It can feel like some ideas are not being pushed through fast enough or considered at all.

One of the topics brought up on council was how the team should discuss feedback that gains significant traction. We are still working through the details but agree that there could be more responsiveness on some feedback.

But lets also be honest with ourselves as impatient gamers.

I can almost guarantee the team looks at those threads. I can guarantee they are working as hard as they can on the core features that will fix our gameplay loops and economy. Many of the threads become repeats and the team can not and should not waste their time looking through each one replying "yes this is being worked on" or answering soon when people say "wen"

I think we all need to be prepared for it to be a little stagnant for a month or two and get excited when a new feature comes out ever couple weeks or so. There is no reason to lose hope in the project or their willingness to lisen to feedback. Because I know the current ICC will also advocate for changes that make sense even if the team disagrees.

This game will take over the space. We just need time.

I innovated simple digital payments in year 2000, wont get into details, but that's why it frustrates me to see how ETH L2s have added SO MUCH friction and confusion to the wallet funding process for amazing products like Illuvium, Its a major step backwards.

Illuvium can make the best game in the world, but the economy will never make it if new users have to go through THAT to deposit funds from metamask or phantom. Needs to be 1 step, simple step, not 2 and not confusing like that.

If owner of Illuvium doesn't know the problem, they may never fix it. If they do know the problem, then why not fix it? My guess is they don't even know, so I hope I was able to expose it here today 👍
