I wouldn't be opposed to lowering the $5k per month if I was voted in. I don't know what all goes into the backend of being on the council, so I don't know how much time is actually involved in the commitment. The one side of this I haven't seen anyone comment on is regulation. If a council member puts in enough time that the $5k/month puts them under their country's minimum wage then the DAO could get in trouble for that.
