Was it actually clearly said that as a F2P player in Illuvium all we can catch is Tier 0s?

i mean i go out for a trip with no fuel, fresh new player, can i run into anything else than T0s? or can i also find let's say an atlas? and if i find an atlas, is there something else than the difficulty of the wave that prevents me from catching it?

what i see is that only Tier 0s with INCREDIBLE stats and max level will have demand (as their only use will be Leviathan)
because they're actually free to get, a lot of these will be on the market and they'll be sold for like 20cts each and maybe an incredible one max leveled will be 2-3$...
You cannot expect to go very far in PvP using only them either as even tho they are useful, the stats gap is pretty big.

so all of this means, a free to play player, needs to FIND at least 3 to 5 EXCEPTIONNALLY high stats Tier 0s (Preferably Grokko as it is the best one) before he can buy ONE trip to the cheapest area.

This is insane effort to just be able to play with anything else than the 5 demo characters...

Hearthstone has always got a fairly easy F2P to competitive path:
play a F2P aggro deck like Murlocs up to legend + make a few arenas
ggwp you got enough coins and dust to make a more competitive deck and start aiming for the top1k

I don't think the goal has ever been to give away as many "card packs" as possible. If someone wants to grind out the free experience, that's a choice they are making.

That's where i don't think the same. Everyone here thinks about mass adoption, and i think that's the goal Illuvium is aiming for... Web2 people never even heard of Axie. they will compare us with what they know:
Hearthstone, Legends of Runeterra, Yu-gi-oh Master Duel (for the TCGs)
and to Pokémon, Monster Hunter, Zelda, Ark Survival Evolved for the RPG-grinding part.

yeah im loving that todays deck has 3 grokko. Its pretty OP if you can get them to chain stun somebody.

But to your main point, I think the expectation is that people will need to pay. If its reasonably easy to grind your way to things for free it will inevitably drive the price down over time. That kind of ruins the collectible facet of the game since the whole 'own your assets' thing is a lot less exciting when the assets are worth almost nothing.

It's fine for Hearthstone, or other web2 games, to give away in-game assets relatively freely. Those assets typically don't have monetary value (as you don't own them, the developer does). It makes pretty good sense to me to err on the side of caution with the availability of assets for free players.

There are already systems built in to lower the barrier to entry for competitive play - Stage 1's playable as Stage 3's, as an example.

I'm genuinely curious if you have a better idea, this kind of thing hasn't been discussed here in a long time.

yeah kinda. i see people on twitter convinced that this game will conquer kids and stuff and become the next Pokémon... as if kids would be satisfied with 5 different characters with 5 different colors each nowadays. but if they can't get more, they obviously won't like it or ask for money to their parents to play it, which will HUGELY decrease the amount of kids in the Illuvium Space. (so these people are just wrong imo)

once again im fine with that, like the whole game is about "Fight 4 ETH" and gambling is not for kids.

I don't inherently disagree with your premise, that a pay wall will turn some portion of people away - It absolutely will, and there's precedent for that in any game with a pay wall.

I also think there's a big difference in the model of ownership from some of the games you're comparing to. Pokemon TCG or MTG weren't giving card packs away to people.

Maybe there's some kind of other solution that doesn't gate gameplay, but also doesn't give people free assets. Gods Unchained, at least the last time I played it, had something like that going on.

i mean i compare this with Pokémon, a perfect stats pokemon is super rare and has like 1 out of millions chances to appear. anything which is not perfect stats is unusable competitively. i expect that in Illuvium anything below 95% of the potential max to have zero demand because otherwise it's easy to get, and if it's easy to get, why would one bother buying it rather than go farm it himself?

the only place other than overworld where this stats matter is Leviathan, which is the gambling arena. so demand will be really limited for anything not maxed imo.

Now about the price and cards thing:
i AM fine with that. i'm just saying i don't get how people can :
1: think the F2P aspect will be that big and actually "relevant"
2: i don't think the game will be a success with kids by the simple fact that the F2P is ultra limited, and at the moment you put money on the wallet for your kid to spend, you take the risk of him getting involved into gambling once you turn your back.

There is no estimated timeline, we are currently on Private Beta 2

There is no official timeline. The closest you will get to that is Kieran confirming that the game will definitely be out by the end of next year, in a recent AMA. He has made too optimistic forecasts in the past, but you could tell this comment was clearly different. End of 2023 was so far beyond what was expected that he felt safe in confirming it.

Personally I’m expecting a launch of open beta in roughly 6 months. That’s just my personal thought. 🙂
