#More Feat's?

Been a minute since I talked in here, but what are opinions on giving players feats every 2 levels?

I have been DMing Tyranny of Dragons and although I would allow the players to learn feats by paying for the training and undergo it, there isnt any large downtimes yet, and I am still getting the hang of changing a module to fit the same story but with a new setting, timeframe, etc. So instead I was thinking of giving them more access to Feats via through every even level they get a new feat. Especially since this campaign I want them to power game a bit and help me learn how to balance monsters vs players. I was able to pull of 2 phases on some mini-bosses, it doesn't always work.

Or if anyone has any of their own ideas on how they gave players access to more feats (apart from training) that would also be appreciated.

I would recommend against it. It will lead to both a glut in ability score points, which unbalances the class system in favor of classes that rely on more than just one stat overall. If that wasn’t enough, feats tend to allow interactions that aren’t necessarily as easy to balance against, particularly in conjunction with each other.

#

If you want to run a high power game you can still do this, but it’s not a decision to make lightly.

#

(By level 6, or even potentially level 4, a PC under a system like this will have a 20 in their primary stat, and this is expected usually at level 8. And this will compound with secondary stats much quicker than you might think, particularly if this is literally every 2 levels, including on the levels that give Ability Score Improvements.

#

(To be clear, this will likely translate to 10 additional ability points in a 1-20 game, which is a tremendous swing in score line, on top of all the other features it brings)

When it comes to feats. (Atleast for 2014.) I have all my players get a feat at level 1 and I ban variant human and custom lineage. If I want my players to get more feats. I usually tie them to a magic item that I know they will always use. Assuming I want them to have more. Or just. Instead of a manual of health. Have it be a manual of X feat in the book and treat it like a manual of health.

I guess what I would say to help fix the inflation in ASI would be they only gain ASI on levels they normally gain Feats, so this can allow them for a little extra something but if they want the ASI that comes with the feat they have to wait until they are level 4, 8, 12, etc.

You can make it that they don’t gain ability score improvements on the feats they take besides regular asis, that’s one way to do it

#

Though it will still be a truckload of extra mechanics you’ll have to consider and shoulder

#

Same for the players themselves

The main thing for this is because I plan on adding a handful of new feats due to some homebrew mehcanics I have been working on the past 2ish years that are finally being noted down and documented for my players

#

Theyre not game breaking feats but they are feats that help the homebrew mehcanics, and I dont want to take away from how they are limited to only 5 feats through the entire game

To be clear, I am not saying you can’t. It’s your game, and you can absolutely run it this way, as long as you and the players are on the same page

#

I am simply warning you about the potential effects more feats can have on game balance.

The last way I see around this is instead limit the feats to the ones I created that improve on the homebrew system that way they can at least chose from those as they level up. 5 HB feats and 5 Base feats

For the two campaigns I currently run my players got one “personality” feat from a very short list, which is more about fleshing out the character’s role in the world before life forces them to adventure

#

While this is not the same thing, the same principle certainly can apply.

I think that may be the best way to run it, have the homebrew feats as a separate list they are allowed to get at certain levels, though instead of 2, 6, 10, etc. I'm thinking of doing important milestones, 3, 7, 11, etc

I guess the only thing is, are my chosen levels good?

"Apart from an extra D&D feat at level 3, they [players] will also be able to have a Homebrew specific feat at the following levels: 3, 7, 9, 13, 15. If a homebrew feat is chosen at these levels, the players will not benefiet the ASI that comes along the feat. ASI are only awarded at normal levels (4, 8, 12, 16, 19)."
