Since your friends will be looking to you to guide them through the game, it’s important to have at least a basic understanding of the system. I recommend trying out some beginner-friendly one-shot adventures before jumping into being the GM. This helps you get a feel for the core rules and concepts of the game. For me, hands-on learning worked best — actually playing the game helped everything click.

You might also find it helpful to invest in a pre-made adventure. That way, you won’t have to worry about preparing every little detail for your first campaign and can focus more on running the game.

Here’s what helped me learn:

  1. Experienced the game as a player before I was a GM.
  2. I purchased the Player’s Handbook and always kept it handy for quick reference. (It’s available online for free, but I prefer having a hard copy.) For you, the Dungeon Master’s Guide might also be especially useful.
  3. When I needed concrete examples, I watched YouTube videos and tutorials.
  4. I watched other campaigns and GMs in action for inspiration. You’ll learn a lot by observing your peers.

Don’t feel like you gotta know it all—even the most experienced GM’s need to glance back at the rules every once in a while. Good luck, you’ve got this! minecraft_netherite_sword_BOMBG

How do I find a game?

There might not be a game right now, but they are posted regularly in this server! Long-form games, called campaigns, are posted in #dnd-campaigns. Short-form games, called one-shots, are posted in #dnd-one-shots. A one-shot is more of a pick-up game, where the adventure starts and finishes in a single session.

To join a game on this server, you have to verify (#verify). Once you're done with that, use id:customize to pick up roles that will ping for your campaigns, one-shots, or both depending on your interests. One-shots are more common due to their nature. Also, not all campaigns will ping the role. So it won't hurt to check out the channel occasionally.

We have a big community here to just hang out, have a good time, and talk about the game in #main-hall-dnd-chat and life or other interests in #the-tavern-off-topic. There's some good starting info to learn the game in #helpful-links, and you can ask questions in #1055391653575262208.

Hangout Area (under #music-bots) is where people hang out in voice! A good number of games are formed by people deciding that they're gonna start a one-shot or even a campaign together! Not all games are posted to game channels, DMs also sometimes find players in voice channels!

Lastly consider diving into the world of DMing yourself and make your own game! Head on to #first-time-dming to get started. DMs are what make the game possible in the first place, and since you host the game it will always happen when you want it! We have a large community of DMs willing to help you in #1055391653575262208.

Pick up a starter module, like Lost Mines of Phandelver. They tend to walk you through the basics of how to DM the game.

Additionally, take this to heart: The structure of all D&D games is this...

  • DM describes a scene.
  • Players ask questions or attempt to do things.
  • DM asks for a check (skill check, attack roll, et cetera).
  • Player rolls it.
  • DM looks at the result, and describes a scene.
  • Loop until game done.
