I'm trying to start a game with my family but I'm very new to D&D. I need some help getting started because I don't know where to begin.

Hello @neat token! I hope you'll have a wonderful time DMing for your family!
While there are many #helpful-links that can help you get started, I would like to direct your attention to a different channel: #first-time-dming! In it you will find a list of One-Shot adventures that are very beginner friendly and easy to understand!

If you didn't see the term until now, a One-Shot is a game that is intended to be played in a single sitting, in contrast to the Campaigns that many are used to. Playing a single session can help you get the feel for DMing, while also allowing your players to understand what it means to play Table Top Role Playing Games.

I whole-heartedly recommend The Sylvir Tower adventure #816752785613127710 message , it's the game I started DMing with and it's my go-to for both beginner players and beginner DMs. It is filled with short explanations that help you get used to D&D!

After you finish the One-shot, you can easily decide if you would rather run a Campaign or more One-shots, what adventures interest you etc. Don't be afraid to try!

And, last but not least, everything that you need to begin playing and DMing tonight can be found in the book called "Player's Handbook". If you doubt anything and can't ask us here, feel free to consult the book!
