So, I’ve never been a DM before, I’ve never even played a single game of D&D before and I know absolutely nothing about it, but my friends want me to be a DM for a campaign we’re going to start. What are things that I have to know before I start? I know there’s a lot that goes into it, but I doubt I’ll be able to learn all that before we start, so ideally it would be nice to know the bare minimum so I can gradually expand on that as we play, if that makes any sense. 😭

Hey there, DM in the making here!

I'd recommend that you play a few games as a player with some more experienced players before DMing for newbies. This server hosts one shots fairly often and you can get some experience as a player and learn the basics!

If you wanna jump right into DMing, reading the Player Handbook start to finish is the best way to learn everything you need to know. You can skip little things in between but DnD 5E is a big game and there is a lot to learn.

If you struggle with either of these, the server hosts classroom events where experienced players have time to answer questions about the game, teach newer players the ins and outs, and iron out details like character creation or magic items!

Hope this helped n_cutedance

Been a Forever DM for a few years, here's some basics to help. Feel free to reach out if you need anything else

I strongly advise finding an Adventure campaign that interests you. That way you'll have a predefined story that you can alter slightly as desired.

I also advise watching some DnD content, focusing on the DM. Every DM, like every player, is different and have their own styles.

Finally, recommend this video:
A Crap Guide to D&D [5th Edition] - Dungeon Master- https://youtu.be/ANdG2DGm0CQ?si=LfH1OJNkcZY98yFS

The best way to be a DM is experience, but these should at least get you started
