#Hexblade Patrons, what ARE they exactly?

Im dealing with my first Hexblade as DM, and the wording on what a Hexblades patron is in the XGE is a bit vague.

Best I can think it, it's this kind of formless spirit of the Shadowfell? Given a voice through it's warlocks?

Any examples or corrections appreciated.

well, it's clearly stated that at the very least the first of these weapons was created by the Raven Queen. Possibly more.

It is intentionally vague so that you can decide what the power actually is.

Could you possibly have other origin stories? Absolutely

work with your player and find what you deem appropriate, it's meant to be creative 🙂

With a little homebrew lore it can be anything, really, though it's probably gonna be edgy with all these curses, lol
I've played with a great Hexblade and their patron was an ancient powerful spirit that was sealed in their sword. You can get creative with it

The anime trope of a powerful demon locked to the cute girl also works well for hexblades.

What was Kagome if not a hexblade? Inuyasha is basically his sword anyways, he's not a real person.

Well, my player and I had the patron as an entity, a whisper in their mind that latched onto them as a friend. What was their imaginary friend of childhood turning out to be much more

But, it is usually affixed to an object like a blade right? (go figure right, but this is where I want more ideas or input)

It's fine for the voice of their imaginary friend to be their patron. But the class abilities are how that relationship is expressed, and the hexblade's class abilities focus around their pact weapon.

You can describe the warlock, its patron, and its abilities in any manner you wish. That's called "flavor" and can be changed without worrying about how it affects the gameplay balance.

You should use caution when modifying the "crunch" which is the actual rules, such as the fact that when a hexblade attacks with their pact weapon they use their charisma modifier instead of str or dex.
