FYI: the update manager is a moonraker feature. Mainsail just display it. thats why i changed the tag.

socket.gaierror: [Errno -3] Temporary failure in name resolution

looks like DNS issues. pls check your network + dns settings on your pi

plush marten
#

well the pi is having issues staying connected to my network . have two pi's each running a printer. this one keeps going on and off the wifi network , the other one is fine , maybe a the pi or sd card. this one pi has been running two years.

plush marten
#

why would a dns issue arise just like that.

nocturne inlet
#

how should moonraker find github without a DNS server?

plush marten
#

how do i figure out how to fix the dns issue,

#

for one, the pi is not staying connected to my network , and two, if i use ethernet cable it is connected just fine but still cannot do updates

#

why won't updates work over ethernet?

nocturne inlet

plush marten

well no, it's been working fine untill resently, so the pi wifi keeps loosing connection , so i want to just use ethernet. that works just fine but i cannot update over ethernet.

#

and i did upload the log , you just said it was dns issue , i don't know what that tells me

umbral thunder
#

That is an old log with your previous issue, isn't it?

#

If you got a new issue, in this case problems over ethernet instead of wifi, you should send a log with the new issue

#

A log is documenting what is happening, so we need a log documenting the problem to fix the problem, obviously

plush marten
#

yup getting that now

umbral thunder
#

Btw it's pretty easy to find out what a dns issue is, just use google or some other search engine and there will be hundreds of results. Here an AI summary of such a search

Can you ssh into your pi and run ping 1.1.1.1?

plush marten
#

yes

nocturne inlet
plush marten
#

$ ping 1.1.1.1
PING 1.1.1.1 (1.1.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

just sitting there not comming back to command prompt

umbral thunder
#

Then you got no internet connection ^^

#

Or very slow

nocturne inlet
#

with CTRL+C you can "cancel" the command

plush marten
#

ping github.com
ping: github.com: Temporary failure in name resolution
well that doesn't make semnce at all that it doen't have internet. it's connected to a switch and to verizon 5g gateway , hmmm

umbral thunder
#

This is how a ping to 1.1.1.1 should look like normally
If 1.1.1.1 fails it got most likely very slow or no connection at all

#

can you run ip ad? (don't worry, the ips should be all local and don't give us information about your location or similar)

#

Send a picture of ip ad

plush marten
#

ok well, there must be somthing going on with the switch then . i just pulgged my other pi in to ethernet and did ping 1.1.1.1 and nothing there either.

umbral thunder
#

Maybe you just blocked that ethernet port in your gateway accidentally? As they get ips, at least you said you can ssh, they should be connected to the gateway or your router at least

plush marten
#

well i have a laptop running Home Assistant os and that is connected to the same switch and i just did an update and that works just fine .

#

trying a couple things to see whats going on.

plush marten
#

so, it has to be something wrong on both pi's , neither one connects to the internet either by wifi or ethernet. i changed ports on the switch and also a different cord.

#

also i can do updates in home assistant connected to the same switch .

nocturne inlet
#

i dont think it is your switch...

#

how do you setup your network on your pi? what is your DHCP server?

plush marten
#

not sure what you mean , the pi's have been working just fine untill resently

nocturne inlet
#

sry i misstyped DNS/DHCP. which part of your network is providing your ip adresses?

plush marten
#

the verizon 5g gateway?

#

looking at other devices connected to the 5g gateway, they all have a button to pause internet, but not the pi's that are connected , so, maybe thats something doing it.

#

Got it!!!! there is a downtime switch in the 5g gateway. I have the pi's in a group called 3d printing, so the switch for downtime was set on , and set for 12am to 12am ct, which means off all the time , the pings now work.

#

I must have been dinking around and hit it on.

#

mainsail updates are working fine now , sheesh!!
