I am able to connect to mainsailos.local via ethernet, but my previous wireless method of using http://192.168.1.141 no longer works

I changed th wpa stuff already using notepad but to no avail

#

Edited the 3 wpa files on my boot

#

I tried editing using text editor on Mac but was met with “no permission to edit this file”

near owl
#

Can you send that file, with your ssid and password censored?

strange sierra
#

does it matter if it is set to my 5g network?

#

google shows that my 3b+ supports 5ghz

#

i have a 2.4gz network too but i would rather have it connected to the 5ghz so i dont have to keep switching just to see print progress

#

i put the exact same wifi name and password in these 3 files

near owl
#

That is maybe the error...The file has to be named wpa_supplicant.conf and not mainsailos-wpa_supplicant.txt

strange sierra
#

2 of them got funny name

near owl
strange sierra
#

okay ill try it

strange sierra
#

but ill try this anyway

near owl
strange sierra
#

ping: cannot resolve mainsailos.local: Unknown host

near owl
#

Can you check your router, to see if it's there?

strange sierra
#

trying but my dad forgot the password so i cant log in to the router

#

ill update when i get access

strange sierra
#

I read the list of devices but can’t tell which ip is the pi

#

I know the ip of the pi via Ethernet

#

But idk if it’s the same if it’s on WiFi

#

Is there a way for me to check the pi’s IP address by connecting a monitor and keyboard?

near owl
#

Yes, with ip addr

strange sierra
#

I forgot my mainsail password

#

I tried pi but that didn’t work

#

I tried all my passwords to no avail

near owl
#

Forgetting the username and password is the worst thing. But there are ways around it iirc. But you would have to search for it on your own

strange sierra
#

It says here “started WPA Supplicant”

near owl
#

Then it most likely started and you just need to find the correct username and password

#

Or if you don't need your history, you could just backup your config files & mainsail settings and reflash

strange sierra
#

I’m able to get into mainsailos.local if connected via Ethernet

#

Without it needing a password and whatnot

#

What’s the default password?

#

Cause I think it might be set to default

#

But I don’t remember reading anything about it when I last flashed

strange sierra
#

Nop. Via web

#

Well I haven’t tried ssh

near owl
#

Default password should be raspberry

near owl
strange sierra
#

Not set to default

#

I’ll try ssh

near owl
#

ssh is the same basically

#

Just a remote shell instead of a local one

strange sierra
#

Yeah can’t ssh to mainsailos.local

#

Wrong password

#

“Permission denied (publickey, password)

near owl
#

Did you mabye setup a ssh key?

strange sierra
#

Probably but I don’t remember

#

Could’ve sworn I just used raspberry

#

Since I was too lazy to set one

near owl
#

pi is default user and raspberry is the default password

strange sierra
#

Yeah no go

#

Is there a way for me to change it via boot sd card?

strange sierra
#

Alright. I’ll try stuff

strange sierra
#

Do I just download my printer.cfg and stuff

near owl
#

Yes, just download all the configs. For mainsail you have to click on the settings button top right. There you will find the mainsail settings in moonraker db entry

#

mainsail.cfg is the only config, you don't need to download. That one is always the same

strange sierra
#

Ah okay

#

For the moonraker DB, I selected all the boxes except for webcams. Does that include my printer.cfg or do I still have to download that from the config files

near owl
#

You still have to download that

#

I don't know if you already reflashed, but you could also do a backup of the whole sdcard first

#

Just to be sure, that you don't loose anything important

strange sierra
#

Hmm there’s a 32 bit and a 64 bit option now for flashing mainsailos via rpi imager

#

Which do I pick?

near owl
#

Doesn't matter. I recommend the 32 bit version, as the 64 bit version isn't really needed

strange sierra
#

Alright thanks

strange sierra
#

I’m confused

#

Now it’s not even working even via Ethernet

#

Okay so I got connected cause I apparently changed the name from mainsail.local to Raspberrypi.local

#

But that’s only via lan

#

Manually set the ssid and password via raspi config

strange sierra
#

I connected the raspberrypi to the router via Ethernet cable and it showed up then. But it’s not connecting to the WiFi so far

near owl
#

@pseudo tulip sry for the ping, but I guess you have a lot more experience with the wifi thing of SBCs
Wifi won't connect, but ethernet works. WPA conf and raspi-config got already tried.

strange sierra
#

It only works now cause the rpi is far from the printer

#

But once it’s connected there’s no way

strange sierra
#

Yup I restarted it without the Ethernet plugged in and left it on for like an hour and no luck. I plugged in the Ethernet without turning it off and it connected within 30 seconds

pseudo tulip
#

Sorry, didnt notice the ping. Lrt me read to it first.

strange sierra
#

It’s alright. While you’re reading that I’m gonna put an option. Usb WiFi dongle

#

Tho I would prefer that to be a last resort since I’m trying to save as much as I can for a better pc

pseudo tulip
#

So, I only can guess here, do you use the exact same SSID's for 2.4 and 5ghz? This is often an issue with raspberry pis, also using WPA3 for encryption sometimes leads to issues.

strange sierra
#

Well, different names

#

Tho my dad says im able to connect to any device even if im using the 5g while it’s on a 2.4g

#

Also I learned that I’m using the rpi 3B not the 3B+

#

So there’s no 5g built in

#

But yeah, I think it’s WPA3

pseudo tulip
#

For a quick test I would suggest, open an Hotspot with your mobile device, use simple ssid and password for the hostpot, normaly in Android you can see which IP the rpi then gets assigned. Try to connect via its IP from your mobile that gives Hotspot.

strange sierra
#

And if it connects then it’s an issue with WPA3?

pseudo tulip
#

If that works, you have to change settings in your router.

strange sierra
#

Found a Reddit thread from 2021 that says no rpi supports WPA3

pseudo tulip
strange sierra
#

Okay that’s odd. My wpa_supplicant.conf file completely disappeared

pseudo tulip
#

Then it has accepted your setup. This behavior is intended. Because there are no read limitations on FAT32 partitions and your password is stored in clear text. So, it sets it up and deletes the file if setup was succesful..

#

A template is inside WiFi-Readme.txt in boot partition. Just copy and paste the according blocks to a new file

strange sierra
#

hmm my iphone isnt showing any devices being connected

pseudo tulip
#

Then there might be an option you setup NetworkManager by using raspi-config or you Wifi module died.

#

Try to flash a standard, raspberry pios. If it works there you did something that messed up your mainsailos, this is hard to recover if you havent access to it

pseudo tulip
#

Ofc on another SDcard

strange sierra
#

ah i already did a fresh install on this sd card

#

so i dont really have much to lose anymore

#

man i love KM switches when using a single keyboard

strange sierra
strange sierra
#

Okay that’s weird. So for starters, we have 2 routers. 1 being the one the internet provider gave us, then the second one which has stronger range and speeds which is connected to the first router.

#

The one it’s connected to is router 1

#

The one below it is our stronger router

#

And it won’t let me connect to it

#

But I can ping google.com when connected to router 1, albeit with high ping

#

It takes pretty long to load but I’m able to go on google images so the WiFi module definitely works

strange sierra
#

Solved. It really was just a problem with WPA3

#

downgraded to WPA2 and it works

near owl
#

Then please close this post

strange sierra
#

…idk how

#

I’m on mobile if that makes a difference
