I agree, the real problem is people jumping down onto you as you are pillaring up. If the damage dealt by the charge attack gets reduced I think the issue is solved and spears are balanced.
I don't think removing them outright is the way to solve this, with them removed players can't experience spears at all just because one feature was too strong for the gamemode

That's why you place blocks above you while you craft so you don't die to anvils and drip stones. All good lr players develop that habit. If you don't then that's a skill issue
