I'm trying to create a speaker groups for announcements with Universal Provider, but I can't seem to do that. Since this is related to Home Assistant, should I just create a Group helper entity in there instead?

Also, if I wanna use a Universal Provider for unsynced music, how would I do that? All I see is Sendspin.

I have Chromecast and other devices in here, but I can't create groups for them in Music Assistant.

From what I could tell, you have to create the first group from the configuration of the Universal Group provider.

#

It's a little weird and confusing, IMO

#

After that, it will show up in the dialog you showed

You need to install the universal group provider first, we dont install it by default because we dont particularly like it

I agree that it's not a great solution overall, but I had exactly the same reaction as the OP about why it doesn't show up in the Add Group Player dialog at first

ah that is a rather strange bug then that got unnoticed

#

don't like the universal group at all but it should at least show up there ๐Ÿ™‚

I'll file an issue. I set it up, realized that you really don't want music to be out of sync, and removed it ๐Ÿ™‚

I was wanting to use it for announcements, but I think setting up media groups in Home Assistant makes more sense for that use case.

I have another reason to want Universal Groups though.

I'm also currently in an in-between period with my Sendspin devices meaning I have to mix 'n match with Chromecast atm, and that might always be the case.

Those devices are separated from the main floor and basement: my bedroom or in the garage where I wouldn't care if they're outta sync since there's a door and stairway between 'em.

Well, you can use them. You just add the first one a different way.

I added one, and now it shows up!

Thing is, I can't create Chromecast groups in Music Assistant, but with Universal Group Player, I can! This means I can cast to 2 NVIDIA Shields at the same time without bothering to do that through the Google Home phone app :).

#

But it's not 100%. I can only do that through Music Assistant (or Home Assistant), not from anything else.

You;'d better create a cast group in the Google app, then MA will be able to pick that up and you get a better (synced) experience than using universal groups. UGs should be sort of a last resort
