They received it super well. I’m again, confident for next week and proud of them.

This is insanity.

Anyways, in regards to next weeks presentation it will be focused on mixed media. Today was experimentation.

My work is all about self discovery and finding yourself, experimenting with different materials and breaking boundaries.

So the fact that they picked up well on that today, I’m glad. I’m proud. I have no better words because like, I just am really amazed by them.

Do not be discouraged; push forward.

We all share that struggle at some point. I can only draw hands and feet from observation and in realism 💀 I can’t draw many things from my imagination in regards to like poses and anatomy. But, I always experiment and play it out. And there’s nothing wrong with using refs. If you’re heavily referencing, of course credit. However, you can also reference or trace your previous works too 😉 let alone be your own ref or ask someone around you. Idk

I’m still learning. There’s never an end to learning.

Heh, thanks! My storyline starts in 2010, 12 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, so all the characters from the books and movies aren’t in school anymore (except for the teachers of course)

So the first attempt at carving a wand is a bit scuff, but it didn't break so there's that.

The hand section isn't touched as I just wanted to try and get the actual pointed shape of the wand first.

Really would help if I got a lathe but that's money I don't really have.

So until then, scuffed knife marks from where it dug in too far is what I've got

it only looks great cos the phone camera failed to pick up the scuffed knife work

some information about the wood, it's plain old pine cos it's cheap, and the diameter is 18mm, I have another 2 metre long piece so I can keep cutting blanks for another 4 goes

aim next is to try and thin the handle (is it a handle? it's where the hand goes) and form a proper grip, and I guess try and improve the actual business end of the wand

mostly though I think this one is a bit of a write off, but that's why I'm doing it with pine instead of alder

When you look at the actual wands, theyre rarely smooth. The unique style is all part of the magic of it. It looks great!

though I'm still not fully sure what I want mine to look like

so basic shape first, then I might try carving a spiral or something on one of the later ones

I'm sure I've got a file somewhere that can work for that

might also help to fish out the wood draw

If you have resin maybe you can fill in those spaces or maybe make it glittery or something if leaving them like that bothers you. There’s always different options for things like this 😁

And remember, experiment!

the big problem with using a knife is it likes to square off if you cut too deep

and then it's a pain to try and get it round again

I also apparently need even finer sandpaper to finish it, I've got two pieces of sandpaper, one is 80 grit, and the other is listed as F2 which I know it's fine, but I don't know if it's 400 or 500 grit or higher

Actually, there’s like sanding tools and things too.

I’m not sure if this would work well with what you’re doing, but I learned the other day there’s this pad that comes with charcoal pencil sets and the like and they help round or sharpen the points. Works on regular pencils too.

Assuming they’re out of wood, maybe that could work?

But also, I’d suggest normal sanding tools first if- bingo

I’ve never worked with sanding things, but woodwork sounds fun overall. I’d like to give my hand at it someday. That and metal forging because 🥰

for me this is something I've wanted to do for a while, my aim is to by a couple of planks and try making practice swords as well, and I've got a stave I cut from a weird rose bush in my sister's garden some 3 years back that I want to try making into a bow

so I thought "sod it" and went and bought myself a long pine dowel, 2.4 metres long, for £10 and so today cut the first length of it, and sat myself down in a chair on the patio and started cutting away at the wood

I've got some other wood working tools around somewhere, a wood draw (sort of like a curved blade between two handles that you pull towards yourself), a wood planer (the old handheld type not the modern belt sander type), and some files somewhere.

And yes I'll share pictures of the bow, though I'm also expecting it might snap on me cos I've never made a wooden bow before

I will say though that deciding that I wanted to make the wands accurate to what mine is meant to be length wise (and eventually wood wise) means the damned thing goes from my elbow to the start of my fingers. Cos of course I'm meant to have a 14 1/2 inch long wand. I mean sure I'm 6'2" and the length actually feels right for me, but damn does it make storage a bother. No arm holster for me.

Fuzzpot Black, the next greatest wandmaker. lol.

The coolest thing we have here is this lol

This park used to be an old concrete plant and right now they’re making more highways but we noticed on our last visit there’s an underpass beneath the bridge so I may have more abandoned railway photos as well as a new area to explore!

And then the extension to this park also used to be an amusement park a very very long time ago. I have a photo of one of the remaining power structures, give me a moment.

I took this some years back, but it looks different now. That whole construction area in this one is all park now. And they also added a new bridge too 😱

Anyways, I’m glad I took this photo. Hopefully they keep some of the old stuff 🤞

There’s also a very old and broken down pier near the first area, and also like I said an old abandoned train station which I again need to take photos of before it goes poof.

As a child I was amazed with the overgrowth on that building and now that I’m older it’s even more fascinating.

So I started working on the grip for the wand. Cut it down to the basic shape and sanded it so it's no longer rough. Made some more mistakes as can be seen via the chunk missing at the end of the wand in the 3rd picture.

Next time I'm going to be a bit smarter about it.

I've since found some extra tools and I'm going to buy more sandpaper, that along with the worktable that my dad's letting me use (not like he uses it in any case) should mean the next one turns out better

but aim for this one before I claim it finished is to dig out some files, go over it with them, then after that use a curved file to put some indents for the fingers in the grip and then a spiral groove running the down the actual wand itself, before lastly trying to put some spirals into the pommel of the wand.

I know it's not technically a pommel but it's better than "butt of the wand" or "the hand end of the wand"

It's not that good currently and I've made a load of mistakes, so I'm glad I bought 2.4 metres of the stuff meaning I get 6 goes out of it in total, and then a smidgeon left over. Lots of material to practice on.

Once I've done so though I'll buy some wood dowels that match the wand woods of mine and my friends wands and then get to making them

I want to get alder for my wand as that's what it's meant to be, and then cedar for a friends wand, but the only company I've really seen selling them is one in the states

Also @winged widget to answer your question from #🧙wizarding-world-passport-channel I may sell wands if I feel I'm good enough in the future. If I do then it won't be until after I've made mine and my friends.

As to the use of copper, yeah I got suggested that earlier today as well. It's soft enough to be pliable with a small hammer without damaging the wood, so maybe if it fits the design.

Currently I'm just aiming on getting the wood design right

I've found a place though that I can easily get beech, birch, cherry, maple, and oak from.

and for barely anymore than the pine cost me

but getting other woods is proving to be a bit awkward, though I've got time to ask around and find out.

beech wood was to hard for files. It only did a lot of scratches. I had to shorten my first wand because of it.

I start selling now. I think my wands are good enough. There are better ones of course but there always will be those who learned woodturning or gold smithing etc. I'm completly self taught and for that I'm proud of my outcomes.

I often see artist 12/13 years old who post commission sheets on instagram. Some of them draw like they have practiced for over 20 years, some of them draw like my 2nd grade students.

Whilst I agree on that, for me it's a matter of if I don't feel like I'm up to scratch then I wont put it out there

I learned how to manipulate colors a little bit with separating layers for 3D too. So that’s kinda fun, experimenting with those and seeing what comes out.

Un voila one spiral groove, and a bit more detailing overall but otherwise I think I've gotten this first go about as far as it can go, I didn't have much of a plan with it beyond "make it wand shaped" and the fact it's turned out semi-decent has been a great start.

I'm going to go buy more sandpaper tomorrow and maybe a new file or two (the small ones I have are great for detail work but damned finnicky and take a while to go bigger stuff), and then maybe start on wand design number 2 come tuesday.

I've learnt a bit making this one and despite its flaws it's been a nice way of learning.

Plan for the next one is a bit more complicated and I think getting towards the design I actually want my wand to be.

danke Swift, though that picture actually shows the flaws from the knife better (took it with my DSLR so it's 6000 pixels by 4000 pixels, deffo got the resolution to see the scuff)certainly on the grip part.

Things I've learnt range from as simple as; direction of cutting (sometimes the knife will bite really deep in one direction but not in the other), making a notch for the knife to run up against to help create raised sections, cutting a line for files to follow, and the like.

Honestly simple stuff when you think about it, but stuff that didn't occur to me when I first sat there with a piece of dowelling and a knife

Hmm though, I'm tempted to make the next one and not share pictures until done cos I kind of want to challenge Lily to see what design she thinks would fit me versus what design I'm making.

Its always good to practice your drawings and paintings of Feet, that way you'll always have a foot in the door when you apply for artist jobs
