How much of canon Harry Potter do I need to know to join the Marauders fandom and read fanfics?

Honestly, I would say probably as much as there is. The Marauders fandom has this habit of creating entire personalities and descriptions of characters that are only ever mentioned once or twice and are never given and details, so knowing as much as you could might help you understand more of what the Marauders fandom discusses when creating fanfictions, headcannons, and other related non-canon media. But as Darkstar said, the third book, the Prisoner of Azkaban, included a large chuck of the information we know of the Marauders and is very helpful in understanding their roles in the stories as well as personalities. We also learn about them in books 6, I think and 7.

if you take into account the basilisk in Harry Potter and how it kills them if they look directly into its eyes and paralyzes them if they indirectly look at it, would glasses or sunglasses be indirectly or like actually block it all out since there is an obstructing object in between their gaze

Just googled it, old fashioned camera viewfinders were like miniature Galilean telescopes according to Wikipedia. This means they had a convergent lens and a divergent lens, so the reason Colin was paralyzed and myrtle died is because he looked through what was technically two lens while Myrtle only looked through one

Convergent and divergent lens are also both used in making glasses. Kinda weird if you think about it cuz the means the basilisk stare can penetrate and kill a person looking through with one lens but can't kill someone looking through two
