I did research about it and that 'black mist' is no other than wandless magic, which you can see a few times in the show including when Dumbledor dims the lights in the Great Hall with barely his hands. A broomstick only helps channel the magic to fly, but free flight is possible for any wizard or witch if they have enough magic potential to do it, however, it is dangerous and could cause you to plummet to death if done wrong so wizards prefer the traditional and safe broomstick

But yeah, there is no straight answer, I believe it is simply a very powerful form of magic most wizards fail. They also say performing magic without wands is possible, but very difficult. This basically means that just like the Vingardium Leviosa charm, if you were to do it wandless you'd basically earn free flight, technically. But yeah its just very, very, very difficult
It also explains the Goblin rebellion, as they are also able to use magic but it is more potent with a wand but Wizards do not want them to have wands or even rights for that matter hence the war
Therefore, if a Broomstick can channel enough magic to allow flight, so can flight be possible without
