I'd just like to throw in my thoughts on this as a small developer myself, I have a team of 4 wonderfully talented people in the process of making a game right now.

We are all working without generating income off a kickstarter and this has made process very slow. We are in full support of making a kickstarter for our game, but we will only do this when we feel we have made the game as best we can WITHOUT financial income going into it.

But in order for us to make it BETTER than out own abilities, that requires other people to add to the team like artists, music, and the like. YES we can just do this ourselves but we all have specific talents we add to the game in our own way and it wouldn't be wise to stretch each person so thin.

Kickstarter is an important thing for teams like us in developing the game even beyond our own boundaries and talents! It also introduces a lot of wonderful criticism before we even launch the game which can be very helpful.

The thing is right, what lovely is doing is fine, making the game as best as possible and using Kickstarter to help polish it is fine because at that point the game is functional and you can tell if what your supporting is like... yknow something worth supporting

It's pretty hit and miss, personally I've never pre-ordered and regretted it. But, I guess it kind of depends what you're expecting as well. As for kickstarter, I've only ever supported projects I want to see happen, even if they had minimal to show. Just because hey, if the goal isn't met, I'm not spending any money, if it is met, I'm just buying a product. Of course me backing them implies that I trust them to do a good job. So in the end, I guess if you pre-order or buy a product you don't know anything about, then it's on your own fault if the product doesn't meet your expectations.
