It's pretty cool! Getting to talk to them on a personal level kind of breaks the barrier created by being a player that looks at developers on a very distanced, non-personal level.

We have a decently sized team that are in different states, countries, and all work different kinds of jobs. I know a handful that are in tech fields, and others in much different jobs. Moderating is very much something we do in our free time or whenever we have our phones available. tongue_out_closed_eyes

That tends to be why pings are super important for us, because we might be too busy to watch constantly but a tag on our devices will let us know it's important.

I think it can be! I only joined the team last year, and it took me some time walking on eggshells to understand how to handle myself knowing that I can reflect back on the company (even not as an employee). A little common sense and help from an awesome team goes a long way, though.

When I moderated, I tended to be the arbitrator within the mod team in addition to backend. I'd process everything technical but whenever it came to questionable lines that the mod team couldn't decide on, I tended to make a decision or compromise that people fell in line with - and I wasn't even the admin.

It was a nice feeling, honestly.

Normally end up taking an administrative role in stuff I do as I really enjoy organizing and such. Currently trying to build a community around the esports team I manage, but thats a bit difficult

and haha, there is the mod team and then the investigation team, two separate branches. Im one of the heads of the investigation, but I see what the mods do and gosh am I appreciative of all that work. That many people is a lot of work.

Equally, smaller servers have the same issues as there are less mods that are able to be around 24/7 etc. Mods of any server size are amazing

Fanmade, but not anything above 10k. It was something I did in my free time - generally for community-based games. I had some offers to moderate larger servers from game-makers and owners but it was always 'volunteer' and not paid. I take a poor view of for-profit owners/businesses asking for people to volunteer their time without benefit in a way that indirectly brings more revenue.

Yeah, but streamers are more socially oriented - like movie stars. Doesn't mean that the sound guy gets paid more (and there's a lot of people trying to get into that industry, so it's barely breaking even).

Nah I just think as the market for that grows so does the need for staff and also proper compensation for their work. The only problem with using streams as an example is that mods tend to be a popularity contest aswell in my experience. So your reward for actual works = social status in the community, which feels rewarding

I'm actually deaf irl, but I was raised to speak and lipread - never was taught ASL. However, it's such a pain for most people to make sure I can lipread them or repeat what they say or otherwise make sure I can keep up with the convo - groups are my bane in particular. So Online is where I go to understand and chat with people.

Yes. The main issue isn't even that I can't lipread, although that's obviously a problem. The issue for me is that the moment I speak and say that I'm deaf and need to lipread to understand people's speech (to cashiers, etc) - then they don't process that I'm deaf and need to lipread. They speak louder, repeat themselves, do weird gestures, etc.

So now I don't speak at all and just type everything out on a phone and show them. That does the trick.

Yeah they really do help. I've only seen them online, never in person. Ironically, though, when I type things out on a phone - people remove masks (i stay a distance away and keep my mask on) and ask if I can lipread. I nod.

They are normal masks with very tightly sewn "windows" on them - the stitching around the window and the moisture proof spray you can get is proof enough for it to be safe

I really do wish people had nonverbal ways of communicating as a standard complement to the verbal language we have. It's just so much more convenient to have ways to express everything in two languages (verbal and nonverbal) that closely mirror eachother.

Obviously that's a bit too much work to implement easily and there's other goals that should be focused on instead, but it's a pipe dream.

ASL has actually been demonstrated to improve cognitive ability in young babies - they can sign faster than they can learn to speak - and having a 'visual' language strongly improves teaching abilities to the point that deaf students were outperforming expectations.

If Sign Language wasn't so oppressed and deaf people so marginalized, I can only imagine what society would have turned out to be now.

tbh even now boarding schools are pretty... weird, intense, bad at times. The boarding school I grew up near wouldnt let girls have hair shorter than their shoulder blades, and they had to wear skirts. Boys had to have near buzzcuts, and I distinctly remember going on a school visit and everyone looked like... exactly the same. (and were handing 20 pounds notes to someone to buy a cupcake - who spends 20 quid on a homemade cupcake>>>)

Yeah Its a very different cultural approach than what we have in Norway. Here there's a lot of focus in the individual and being free to do what you want to do, as well as not burdening others (thats an example on why norwegians seem more "rude" to other countries cause we arent as straight forward. We just dont wanna burden peopole)

I think the absolute worst server Ive been on where I have done the most awful stuff, is when we essentially created a villager farm where we bred them, and then when there were too many, it would push one out. An industrial fan would woosh them through lava and then theyd die and we could collect the emeralds they dropped - this is modded btw

it was the last trial before the mirror/final boss fight and it was a potion puzzle where you have to keep an eye on the right potion or die of poisoning!!

i've never been big on Gmod but i've heard it was good and i'll still count it!! and weirdly enough i played that one before the PC version, we had just gotten a PS2 and got it for Christmas

gameplay-wise, it's like a completely different game

but ye there's a lot of silliness within, some screwing around

but tehre is some order too. admins and mods enforce the rules, and prefects also on a lower level, detaining people who don't comply

(you have a detention stick with which you send people to jail if they don't follow the teacher's orders or break the rules, like freespelling, etc)

and every 10 minutes ther's a different class

#

you learn spells in some, and get homework (to earn XP to increase year) in others

#

some times instead of class there's quidditch, or free time, or a lockdown because dark forces (also players) attack the school (this one is rare)

#

potions (you craft potions with ingredients you buy or some that are rare and you must find around), etc.

too tired, gonna fall asleep soon. mostly just all the potions and such. its weird that the knowledge to do things like impersonate people, or cause someone to fall deeply in love with you, is so easily within reach to 11 year olds. not to mention the potions that, if mixed incorrectly (or correctly seeing how you view it) could become a deadly poison indistinguishable to the taker. the house elves like stranger said. the blood purity is an obvious but essential part to the story. a lot of the spells theyre taught are strangely useful basically for defending or attacking another wizard. like really, by the end of it all do we really understand what exactly hogwarts was teaching them to do except defend against dark wizards?
