I guess there was no other way other than trial and error to invent spells. @obsidian grail the way i saw it is that wand use and incanting is used because its easier to teach. say back in the day, 4000 years ago, magic might have been nonverbal, non wand. but trying to teach a student the CONCEPT of the spell they need to cast in their mind is more difficult than making a mental idea of a physcal+verbal movement

If muggles are so helpless against the all powerfull magic, hiding from muggles is just a giant waste of effort, considering 2/3 of the magic communitys jobs is to make sure muggles don't know about magic stuff. It achieves nothing and takes a lot of energy.
If hiding makes sense, it means muggles are a danger even with low technology and could have and perhaps almost did wipe magic people out.
