from my understanding, magic in harry potter works on willpower, which is why kids do magic when they are at their limits. Correct body movement, wand and incantation is for complete control of a spell without any side effects. But there are variations of the spell based on the caster's intent e.g. "accio brooms" summoned the weasley twins' brooms and not any random broom nearby

Yeah I think intent is important. The rules are a bit all over the place though. You have Flitwick telling people you can't mispronounce spells but then later you have nonverbal casting and a silenced death eater that casts a weaker spell because he can't talk
