I typically do sidequests as soon as they become available. for example, just after you learn incendio, a student will give you a quest which requires incendio to complete. just feels better chronologically and from a progression standpoint. you might have not been looking at your school map or hogsmeade map for sidequests either.

Pretty much the first thing you try if you're having performance issues with any game is to switch to Balanced or Performance settings
