That can, over time, affect readability and cause the device to die because it can't spin to read the contents of the hard drive.

There is a side quest that requires you to lockpick a door. If you lockpicked said door before the quest it becomes bugged and unfinishable. Just a heads up to not lockpick doors until you have that quest. Once you get it you'll know what I'm talking about
