A book series I have is about fighting zombies and even then they workout from degradation of the flesh that the zombies have around 5-6 years, maybe up to 10 years if there are some cold winters.

It's kind of a key point in that they have a clear goal to work towards and that after that they've won and survived.

Sorry for not replying earlier.
But yes that's a thing in the book series I mentioned as well. There's a part where they say that they'll likely have to be burning their dead for the next century because everyone currently alive has the virus dormant in them and they can't be sure that babies wouldn't be at risk of getting it until all the currently alive zombies are dead.

It's a shame there hasn't been a new book in the series in a while because it'd gotten around 3 years into that timeframe and looked like it was planning for a timeskip forward a couple of years.
