Damage taken requires you to take damage and don't think it even adds much rage (didn't know it even gave rage before). Which is not really ideal in the later stages.

As far as the Yin Curios you can get whatever, as their effects are generally lack luster in their effects. Yang Curios you go the usual Attack & DMG to Bosses alongside whatever else Dmg type you prefer.

Okay so it looks like the element surge states alter how the elements work in general

Poison Set

• Martial Skills apply [Poison] (1 stack per second cap).
• At 11 stacks of [Poison], deals a special attack on your next uncharged attack.

Thunder Set

• Decreases the number of strikes from Divine Thunder from 4 to 1.
• Can be summoned by dealing 10 times your Attack in damage.
• After 5 Divine Thunder summons, deals a special attack on your next uncharged attack.

Ice Set

• Summons [Ice Spikes] when using a Skill, counting as Ice Blast DMG (1 per 4 seconds cap).
• After 15 [Ice Spikes], a special attack will occur from your next uncharged attack.

So it looks like they're going away from accumulation into more technique based elements.
