From limited time banners that work like any other gatcha system.
Mind that most cases these are very expensive to pull out from banner and people who want star items often start it early and most cases these red star collections go out fast.
With legendary level star items you can have much more luck considering how many there is.
(For example banners come up for me around 5-6.00 in the morning so I’m not often available to pull them due night work)

In case you play trough steam, check steam marketplace for the star collection items available.

Also the star nunchuks were auctioned off for spectral silk, so players might not have spent money to get them if they’ve been playing the game since launch & were sitting on silk they’ve gathered over the years

I didn’t say how many years, but I know a naraka streamer got the nunchuks with silk he was sitting on

If you don’t ever get a star skin to spend silk on it accumulates pretty high since the spectral silk store doesn’t have many good high ticket items and is updated rarely and usually just with makeup or accessories/poses which don’t cost much silk usually

No. It's as simple as spending currency for random items. It's a mechanic. A game with that mechanic can be referred to as a gacha game. Yes, loot boxes can be called the same, but "gacha" is really used for Eastern games.

Gameplay doesn't have hold over the term because the mechanic is its own thing
