Ok so i wanted a stable z for my ender 5 conversion without spending another 300€ on Hydra so i looked in legacy z and went blind into it buy :
-2 m of 8mm rod (4x380mm)
-M5 and M3 screws
-1 lead screws (i reuse original one for the other side
What i kept from stock Z:
-one lead screws
-aluminum extrusion
-heater bed
-springs
-motor ( i stole one from the old X motion system )

*update mod have been tested and work great here is the printables page :
https://www.printables.com/model/773435-ender-5-mercury-one1-voron-legacy-dual-z-mod

#

Sry for my english btw

#

Wrong in my english or my mod

earnest umbra
#

as for the mod, would have been a nice option if I hadn't just gone mad with the stock bed a long time ago

oak cipher
#

I feel like it's gonna be good enouth

earnest umbra
#

don't see why not, unless the stock bed you got is absurdly deformed

oak cipher
#

It seems pretty flat 🤞

dreamy salmon
#

is this basically making the 5plus Z system for the smaller machines?

oak cipher
vernal light
#

The plus stock system is bad in that the sides that connect the lead screws and the steel rods bows very bad. This wouldn’t.

paper plaza
#

this looks really cool. can I see how the underside of the bed is supported?

vernal light
#

That’s awesome

#

And it lets the bed expand a little bit too and stopping the taco effect

oak cipher
#

I Hope it's gonna work

paper plaza
# oak cipher

I like that you reused the Z axis extrusions. I have plenty of those... 😄

oak cipher
paper plaza
#

also, your pfp still makes me laugh

earnest umbra
#

@paper plaza hydraaaaaaaaa

verbal plover
#

@earnest umbra Hail Hydra

oak cipher
#

Hydra IS tooo extensive

verbal plover
#

Ya. I got into 3d printing to save money on buying miniatures. That didn't work out 😞 now I spend more

oak cipher
#

Yeah but that worth the money for Shure

verbal plover
#

And I cancelled my resin subscription to late, and have a 5 to 7 bottles unopened

oak cipher
#

Ok so Quick update before spending files

#

First test print on thé way

#

Traming IS working great and bed defenitely feels a lot steefer

oak cipher
#

First test print with the New z motion system + bambu hot end feels great

oak cipher
#

Im gonna try to upload to printables today !

oak cipher
#

im working on the printables page so maybe realese today

oak cipher
paper plaza
#

I didn't know you need to cut the extrusions. No big deal, but might want to mention further up that you'll need a way to cut them.

#

Also: congrats!

oak cipher
earnest umbra
#

looking good, one personal opinion, part amount before name, makes it easier to follow

#

so instead of
-380mm long 8mm rods x4

like this

  • 4x - 380mm long 8mm rods
oak cipher
#

Im gonna update that too

crude veldt
oak cipher

Lm8luu i think

#

The long ones

crude veldt
#

Do you have a link?

oak cipher

Got RDBB to make custom sizes

#

For this Mod

#

Leadscrews top

#

Too

oak cipher
#

nice

oak cipher
crude veldt
#

I ordered them they should arrive soon

nocturne thunder
#

Im working on printing all the stuff for your awesome mode now. I feel like they should adapt this for the mercury project officially as an alternative to hydra that’s cheaper and easier than hydra but way better than the stock z axis.

crude veldt
oak cipher
crude veldt
oak cipher
#

Yeah i think thats a good idea

oak cipher
crude veldt
#

Bc i cant figure out if they are centered and how much space is needed

oak cipher
#

im designing guides RN

oak cipher
crude veldt
oak cipher
#

im gonna print them and post them right after that

crude veldt
oak cipher
#

no problem

#

thank you to try my things

crude veldt
oak cipher
#

i will include them in the printables when tested but they are pretty simple so should be good

#

This IS how it should fit

crude veldt
#

Printing them rn

crude veldt
oak cipher
#

yeah normal i d'ont centered it like on the original voron legacy

#

plus it gives you space for klicky and nozzle brush

#

and because the toolhead is big you don't loose any printing space

crude veldt
#

But so far the model looks good

oak cipher
#

This IS how it looks on max and min Y

crude veldt
#

For anyone doing this mod lube up the ends of the linear rods this will help them slide in cleanly

oak cipher
crude veldt
#

Interesting I’m doing the vzbot toolhead mod too so I will se how the tolerances will be

oak cipher
#

Should not be a problem tho it's almost the same

crude veldt
oak cipher
#

now wiring and config

#

if you have klicky i can send you cfg files

crude veldt

Why not trident? I’ve always wondered why many people buy the 2.4 over the trident

oak cipher
#

i was interested into the more complex v2.4

#

and more weight on bottom should be more stable but if i had the money i would got both

crude veldt
oak cipher
#

idk im not an ingeneer just a 17yo lazy guy who do 3d printing more than studying

crude veldt
#

But Acctualy I will start to study Engineering next year so I will be able to answer that (maybe)

crude veldt
#

So no university?

I'm 35 and there are days where I tinker more with the printer than I work...

I’m “just” studying mechanical engineering

earnest umbra
oak cipher
#

Not perfect but it's closed now

oak cipher

i have done some folders and aded spacers files to the printables

oak cipher
oak cipher
#

@crude veldt how IS your printer going ?

oak cipher
#

@glad ridge

oak cipher
#

@solar root

vernal light
#

This is only for e5 pro at the moment hey?

oak cipher
#

I think thé ender 5 plus already have a rigid bed 🤔

deep condor
#

hey looking threw your post have you posted your printer.cfg file by chance ? im finshing up the printing for this now and would like to get it added to the cfg as well

languid peak
#

@oak cipher Where did you get the top cover?

oak cipher
#

i modeled it

#

and cut it in acrilic

solar root
solar root
oak cipher
solar root
#

btw you don't need to cut the extrusions, I used the stock length and they were fine

oak cipher
#

yeah it's just cleaner

solar root
#

when the correct length rods arrive I will take more pics

oak cipher
solar root
#

yes I saw it and I will test it tomorrow probably

solar root
#

@oak cipher just finished assembling

oak cipher
solar root
#

Looks good. I havent yet finished the wiring

vernal light
#

Interested to see if the bed is less taco’d with this

glossy thistle
#

Will 400mm rods and lead screws work without cutting?

oak cipher
oak cipher
oak cipher
glossy thistle
oak cipher
#

not shure yet i don't have teh printer RN

oak cipher
oak cipher
#

Ignore the undryed filament but z artifact are pretty much invisible even without wobble x

#

Tiny bit

earnest umbra
oak cipher
earnest umbra
#

in the z direction? it shows every little imperfection

vernal light
#

Wobble x isn’t really needed, especially when your linear rods or linear rails are good quality and don’t let z move in horizontal movement. The lead screw should conform to where the guides make it stay. If you have linear rails wobble x won’t do much.

vernal light
#

I’d print the same model but scale the x and y to twice the length and maybe go 1/4 the height, see if those bands change, could be extruder variation and not z banding. MirageC has a good video on this.

oak cipher
#

Maybe G2A would be a great upgrade but for now it's good enought for me

vernal light
#

That’s all that matters! Anything with a one piece main shaft helps, lots of options and all are good.

solar root
oak cipher
solar root
#

Yes I know, I am just lazy

glossy thistle

Are both z motors the creality x axis type? Or was the original ender 5 z and x motors used?

how long should the lm8luu be?

oak cipher

45mm i think

quasi ruin
#

Are the M3 8mm screws in the lower z-rod suppports just for stability?
Printed a test piece in ASA and it seems quite strong.
Seems like the screws only would help if the piece was to split.

crisp citrus
# oak cipher

Could you post the dxf? About to try this mod myself

oak cipher
crisp citrus
crisp citrus
#

Wow this thing is fiddly to assemble. Seems like it might work though

#

I think the z screws can actually be cut a bit shorter than specified, that way they don't stick out above the linear rod holders and potentially hit the tool head.

crisp citrus
#

Yeah after doing some measurements, better length for z rods is 350mm

ashen drum

(For z lead screws, not smooth rods. Those are fine.)

crisp citrus
#

Probably not relevant to many people, but I made a bracket to mount a voron z end stop or sexbolt for auto z calibration purposes. Gonna clean up the file and post it here probably

random shard
#

Hey I found this mod here and on printables I found really similar one and are they the same ?

oak cipher
oak cipher
random shard
#

And how much the bed costed you

#

I think yours is better because the rods are lower so the toolhead has more space

oak cipher
#

And mod is about 30€ in total

random shard

Are you happy with its performance ?

anyone using this in an enclosed chamber? planning to print the bits out of ASA, but curious if anyone dealt with a warmer chamber and the fact that the bed holders are printed and will be exposed to higher temps through the bolts holding it.

random shard

Let me know I moved the end stops in a way that will not let the noozle and tool head hit the rods of bed

I done some calibration and prints on that bed and it is fantastic if you calibrate it

#

It is super stable and I with klicky calibrated screw adjust and z tilt and it works flawlessly

Highly recommend

Anyone happen to have a design for a matching top panel?

I was thinking about enclosure so I can print abs and asa but I don’t know what to choose

Not really just top and bottom for the electronics.
Probably will just cnc something

Hey @oak cipher , I'm in the process of doing this awesome mod. Do you happen to have the DXF for the top of the electronic enclosure?

Shame would need them too
