I think there is a bigger argument to be made about how romances in social links lead to typically worse writing than the platonic routes as they need to work in the romance stuff; there are only a few exceptions to this but maybe that's beyond the scope of this

in one hand, you have to actually engage with the mechanics and properly utilize available turns to reduce amount of enemy turns, since not only are they strong, but they also increase the palace alert that also doessn't go down on its own (either have to get out and wait a bit, or use a craftable item to reduce it)

but on the other hand, i'm adding as much as possible to make an 'optimal path' not obvious

multiple completely different ways to build your teammates, a lot more personas with more skill variety, different ways to raise social stats that are not inherently superior than other ways, etc

ideally i want something beatable for most paths the player is able to take mechanically, so that aspect isn't much of a minmax if i pull it off

'difficulty' in a turnbased rpg with as many options as smt or pokemon always got me scratching my head thinking about how you can even make it work consistently across the game

early game of most of these games is the hardest because you dont have options, but the further you get into the game, the more opportunities you have to just make the right builds to melt bosses

ig relying more on the three-turn buffs/debuffs during fights is a good way to add difficulty, since it introduces a resource management aspect you have to juggle and adapt around what the boss is doing

i havent played smt 1 and 2, but while nocturne does ask you to use buffs/debuffs, that is more of a knowledge check than a mechanic that adds difficulty, since not only they dont wear off, but they also stack

smt4 i barely paid attention to them, and 5 did it best imo by borrowing from persona (as well as having a max stack of 2 for each buff)

the press turn system from mainline is also a good way of adding skill expression to the turn based rpg format, and similarly, p5's baton pass is imo one of the better implementations of this idea... if it wasnt in such a piss easy game
