Was it ever kicked around to have something like some sort of Source hungry fiend or cracked out wizard if your generation in a chunk exceeds a certain threshold? This idea was tangentially triggered by Zieg with a comment about the old Thaumcraft Inquisitors that would show up and try to remove you from existence.
I'm picturing this as something like the Wretched from World of Warcraft where once you reach a threshold 2 or 3 portal in and start draining your jars and if not stopped early they power up and become more than a nuisance (but they're aggressive regardless).
As a visual cue that the threshold is being reached something like the Mana Wyrms from that same expansion would start showing up around the area where the Source is high enough to spawn the Wretched.
The wyrms wouldn't necessarily be aggressive and may make a decent familiar if tamed. Possibly as a familiar the only benefit they add is marking Wretched when they show up?

It's a fun idea we've tossed around a bit before, but there were concerns if it would just be more annoying to have your base constantly attacked
Poor Xacris would be under siege constantly, yeah.
I'll put it down in my notes and look into it for a personal use thing to revisit if a thousand other projects let me.
this would make a really fun add on
You could hunt for gems and bosses could drop ars related stuff ....nice
Maybe just add some kind of illager like the illusionist they did in medieval Minecraft
Maybe have like a Crystal that the source hungry fiends are attracted to. Like a tower defense kind of deal. Then the player can choose when to let the invasion happen. A nice alternative for some mid/late game items or some exclusive items.
Augmentation could add a number of waves and even make bosses spawn at the end of X waves.
Test your Arcane Metal aainst hordes of source hungry monsters and get uber rewards.
sounds fun, reminds me of the crystal defense event from terraria

It could be toggled via config or gamerules, that would allow for some players to enjoy the constant threats while others can just enjoy playing through the mod normally. Or has that already been thought of but ultimately this was decided against anyway?
