so I think for your purposes you need to just see which alliance in your state fits you best

maxing all econ heroes will take a lot of time, years even, especially if you don't spend much. i put more attention towards economy heroes at the beginning while i was weak, since i knew i'd be joining other people's lairs rather than my own and that i wouldn't be doing well in pvp regardless. once i felt like i was at a decent level i kind of shifted my attention. but don't neglect either

The best theory I have heard came from MBP. To paraphrase, taxis add a lot to your hp pool but little-to-no attack. So the enemy is killing fewer of your troops in the same amount of time, causing them to lose morale faster and run away before you can kill 50% of them.
