That's about it. You have to roll a 5* stat to open up the next line. Then you would lock the 5* stat and roll for the 2nd line. Each roll uses 1 lock per line locked.

Once line 1 & 2 have 5* stats line 3 opens. Then you would lock both 1 & 2

In general I answered your question:
there is a theory about running distance (not mine), which sounds like fun, but no way to prove.
another one about row damage modifiers which is likely to be true. Check with other soldier types with different formations. You will observe similar pictures.
Shooters in 3rd row become more 'tough', but utility is not that great actually. Especially sucks when you setup a formation as fighter, then forget to change and run a lair or a rally on something, and people add weaker fighters and riders.
Adding 10-200 can help. But yes as ManBear said, it depends on stats of your auxiliary class.

Depends tbh. If your riders aren't too far away in stats to your shooters, then that 30% is more of a difference. Kinda like how apex incin, which I need, will be more effective on someone with higher stats than lower stats begin it's a % increase.

If you said that you had 3m T12 riders with 2/3 of your shooter stats and was switching to rider formation, when strong fighters were attacking you I'd understand that.
