If you don't want to spend for tech gear yes shovels and diamond shop that comes every 4 weeks. Yes. There's actually more than 10,000 players in the Top 10% in the BIg Bracket. But there's a bug where you have to be ranked in order to make it into Glory. So I usually try and sneak my farm into Glory just before Arena closes. It's usually ranked #9980 or something like that.

Am I missing something in the Volcano Town event? The 200 journals will cost a total of 4000 wood (200x20). At 5 wood per saw (the real value tends to be more towards 4.5 on the long run per my experience though), and with 240 free saws from daily deducted, that is still 560 saws to be bought thats at least 470$ spent (before vouchers) - but if you buy the three journal packs on two consecutive days you get 230 journals for only 70$ - The extras in the packs are by far not worth the 400$ difference - Imho they should be 2 wood instead if 20 each..
