That's not particularly a good gauge of progress imo.
Promote when you can.
For me, a better indicator is the relative cost to boost ratio.

For example, my chips are 10-star +32 and it's more cost efficient to +33 a chip than to enhance my 8-star +23 cube.

That depends on how willing you are to save up for 9-star. But also it might be better to save those p2 boxes for another equipment type.
I 8-starred everything to unlock all 6 modifications on big misa, but on my two minis I'm 8-starring the focus gears then spending the p2 boxes on chips and modules and converting the gear p1s to enhancers.

The good thing about this game is that there's a ton of different ways to do your equipment based on your play style, goals and budget.

Especially for riders and shooters, the hp/def gears are pretty important for both lairs and pvp. Probably ruins challenge too.
I didn't 8-star my time cubes until after I 9-starred my chips and my space and energy cubes are still 7-star.
You'll have to do the math (divide xp cost over % increase) to see what's more efficient.

I struggled as a fighter when I was working my way up. Was getting my butt handed to me by riders (there's a lot of them) with much lower stats and march sizes.

totally agree here. @sharp swallow i would recommend setting some goals or accomplishments you want to progress towards. That way you have fun trying to achieve those and once you get them you will feel a sense of accomplishment. My goals for weeks and months have been solo lair 40. Get a free skin, ambiance and march. So far i have accomplished all those goals except the lair. Im closing in on the lair aswell and my next goals are swp holder achievement and gov achievement.

If you are farming for blueprints and can't solo a level 44 or higher lair, zombies give you more BPs per stamina spent. Once you can solo a 44, lairs are equal, and anything over level 44 is better. Only reason to hit zombies at that point is for rapid stamina spending or you need to only spend a small amount to finish a quest. They really need to introduce level 41+ zombies to give us a reason to choose between them and lairs.
