I wouldn't worry about them until you have at least several million of your main troops. And even then I'd still rather spend speedups on main troops than taxis.

Casualties are spread out across each troop proportionally. So for example if you have 15m taxis and 5m real troops and I hit you for 4m kills then you will lose 3m taxis and 1m real troops. If instead you had 15m real troops and 5m taxis then itd be the other way around but that same hit would only deal a fraction of the damage maybe like 1.5 mil kills and youd lose like 1.125m real troops and .375m taxis and not catch on fire
