Soft disagree. The shell isn't for everyone. I bought an RP5 for the first time and immediately regretted the purchase because all the reviewers pointed out "ergonomics". But, for my hands and grip. My fingers don't rub the poorly placed sticks so for me it feels nice.

But I view it like the Oculus Quest 2's decision to have a few pupil distance notches over a slider. It works really well for some people but definitely not for others.

I've been trying to figure out if I want to pick up a g2 and have been struggling to find information on how it may run. Shame emulation performance doesn't really extrapolate well to native performance

My G2 arrived today. I can't work out how to get the right resolution for flycast to fill the whole screen though

I'm very happy with it, it's miles ahead of my rp3+ and 845 phone.

So far I'm just uninstalling the stock APK and updating them with the latest versions and configuring the latest turnip drivers. I love how switch runs with the latest eden! And it's nice to be able to brute force gc.

Yeah deffo use an "Emulation on Android" video from Russ. Watch it and then have his written guide up on your G2 and use the links from it for your apks

If you're not used to RetroArch it can be a bit of a beast to get to grips with. But once you get used to it, it's excellent. You don't need to know what all the things do, but it's good to know where certain options are. Russ'll show you the basic things you need to setup like controller mapping and stuff in his main emulation on Android guide, but he also has excellent retroarch-specific guides

I have the ES-DE folder on my microSD card though rather than internal

I set it up once on an RG556 like two years ago and then backed it up to my laptop, then I just copy it to the microSD card of any new Android handheld. That way all my scrapes are there straight away

But as a sneak peak here is part of a test scene i built in ue5 running on the Odin 2 Pro. Its running at 2560x1440p and im trying to punish the gpu as much as i can.

at this resolution, we can get an average of 34fps in the best of scenes, but nothing over 40. we're super gpu bound

Now here's the same test on the G2. Same resolution, same map, and as close as a match for scene for scene as I could. It is a remarkable 60fps, there are some drops into the mid 50s, but it is so much faster than the 8 gen 2.

I've also done this on the g3 gen 3 and it's basically strix halo for android

It seems to be an optimized version of the adreno 740. Its a new architecture that does away with the mobile phone cruft and focus solely on gaming grunt. The gpu is probably prioritized a lot harder than on the 8 Gen 2.

The cpu in the g2 probably is also more efficient, clock for clock. I think 8 gen 2 will have the edge in emulation and things that are heavily clock dependent, but the g2 will reign supreme for actual native experiences which is what it seems the chip was made for

I spend most of my time with these handhelds on android games. Those are particularly where I'm running into the edge of performance at least. I've been wanting a second smaller device other than my Odin 2 for some Zenless Zone Zero stuff but it makes so many devices struggle so it's been the main question I've had since announcement on whether or not I get one.

And there was like no review with the info until the Retro Handhelds stream I was aware of. Most of the reviews just skipped over or glossed over native android. For people saying to use videos from the 7+gen3, those videos don't show higher graphics levels for the couple that exist. And then just a lot of reassuring "it's more powerful" instead of actual demonstrations

Pretty much same. Kotor, dead cells, hollow knight, Sky Children of Light, and a few other titles that will run with no issues on basically any hardware. My trouble game and the one I spend the most time with is Zenless Zone Zero, which as far as I'm aware is one of if not the most demanding games on android

It's mostly fine but some of the more flashy bits can drop the frame rate. I'm actually pretty happy with this performance overall. I'd just like a second device for times when I don't want to carry my Odin or if it's on charge or something like that.

Yeah this is an endgame game mode so it'd probably take a while to get there. But just using the tutorial characters in some of the first areas is still useful. The retroid pocket 5 gets frame dips outside of combat.

While I can't blame them for this, the demos I often see are like the first 5 minutes of the game where you're just given an empty room though so it's hard to get much info on it since even my rp4p was able to handle that

I should probably put up some testing videos on my other devices so someone can find an answer if they're looking for one.

i've done some more testing and have pretty much nailed down the performance profile and why the g2 is so similar to the 8 gen 2 in some instances. The g2 has a higher clocked and faster gpu. It seems to be on a newer architecture too because it supports some higher end rendering features, like unreal actors casting shadows. something the 8 gen 2 doesn't support.

However, the 8 gen 2 has a much faster cpu. It clocks a lot higher so you can see things like discrepancies in pc emulation and other workloads that are cpu speed dependent. but in gpu workloads? the g2 is undoubtedly faster. Just don't get CPU bottlenecked lol

so in terms of devices, I'd say RP6 or any other 8 gen 2 device is probably still the best for higher end emulation and cpu bound games (not many on android).

so if we can OC CPU we can maybe match 8 Gen2 performance in cpu

I can't speak to the 7+ gen 3 as i dont have it in hand, but the g2 gen 2 def has some updates under the hood.

I also was not able to find any real good comparisons looking at that chip. I think the A12 gpu inside the G2 could very well be based on it though. As for the cpu? I'm not sure how much headroom we have for an overclock. It clocks a lot lower than 8 gen 2

they're probably very similar, just minus the phone specific features

Anybody notice what seems to be a glitch on the G2 interface. By default my G2 screen would flip upside-down , even with Auto-rotate off. If I turn on 'Force Landscape' the screen will no longer flip upside-down. Both positions are technically 'landscape'
