Do not buy a RP6. If you aren't interested in 2 screens then the Retroid Pocket G2 is a valid option, but I would recommend the Thor over it regardless

Ironically, the Thor has replaced my 353M (Same size as the 35XX H) since it's easier to pocket/carry.
Was tired of the sticks snagging so I bought a flip cover, but that made the whole thing a bit thicker and like, 2 seconds more finicky to pull out and get into play mode.

I'm avoiding the graveyard shelf issue by limiting myself to three devices according to which category of my needs in a handheld they fit. I've got an Anbernic RG 35XX H as my cheapo device I can carry with me without worrying about losing or damaging something more expensive, the AYN Thor as the "handles all emulation including DS/3DS" machine, and the Steam Deck for the bulk of my Steam Library (and I guess the Thor can handle some of that too but I don't expect to use it much for that beyond tinkering).

The Thor's appeal is being the best device on the market for emulating a system under as near to original conditions as original hardware in a way that has been eluding pretty much every other devices so far. But if you don't care about NDS/3DS in the first place, there are better units out there. It's not the top dog in performance, nor is it the best price to performance the moment you factor out the dual screens.

If anything, I remember a ton of people claiming the launch flopped because shelves were full of units.

I think there was one area that had issues because the transport truck or something was literally stolen, but otherwise everywhere had shelves full pretty consistently.

I wouldn't take "early" sales data too seriously anyway. How fast something sells on launch is bottlenecked by how many units are available and the Switch 2 just had units available.

I'm sure the PS5 launch sales would've been amazing if there were actual units to sell.

Hey there. I was you about two days ago. It seems these cracks are really a cosmetic issue as oppossed to an operational issue.

There was even stuff written about how the Purple color model has been performing with less cosmetic cracks.
Don't get me wrong, some people have had VERY RARE instances where something is wrong with a hinge malfunction, but as or right now, this is not something that should stop you from purchasing the handheld. That's what i've gathered from everything I've read online and here from our Thor brothers and sisters @fluid snow

It's been referred to as a "mold seam" in the instances where people THINK there is a crack.

I then decided to save up for a retroid pocket flip 2 and get it around christmas then this thing came out lol. I'm trying to sell my Xbox Series x that I never use to get some money to buy the thor. I'm a dad with 3 young kids so the portabilty, sleep function, and other features make this a better fit for me than a traditional console!

Yo good move! Honestly, here's my opinion:

From everything I've read and asked, the Thor is so worth it;forget about the Retroid Pocket Flip 2. I wanted it to, but the Thor beats it.

Also side note (but as a Father-to-be 🥹), as someone who misses all the handheld consoles, non-handheld consoles, and games I USED to have but sold them (to freaking Gamestop 🥹🔫) , I would keep it and just save up. Someday it will have value (maybe) or it may be something to play with your kids too!!

Depends on the material, but they do also have a bright colored sticker for the White and Rainbow options, and that could also be an option if you’re hands are the type to smudge matte black materials more.

Personally, my hands always seemed to be way more likely to smudge glass than plastic, and I genuinely could not tell any of you why since I’m still baffled by it whenever I stop to think about it.

At the very least, it just means the black one would likely be better for me.

Unfortunately no, since they only have the Rainbow and the Black for color matching purposes, and I remember they usually only go for those options to be relatively neutral in coloring.

My issue with the triggers is that they press straight down so your hand/fingers need to be pretty high up to comfortably use them.
If they pressed slightly angled it would've been great.

Alright, so now that I have the Thor in my hands I get to find out what the fuss with the back triggers is about.

And, turns out, yeah, I agree, the analog triggers are bad.

You cannot press them by just pushing inward into the device like you'd expect standard analog triggers to be able to do when your fingers are where they would rest naturally. You have to press downward.

Not something I'd consider a dealbreaker, but for games that make heavy use of triggers I'll probably just pick up my actual controller and pair it to the Thor.

Might be dependent on hand size. I can either press inward by flexing with the finger like I'm gripping the device tighter, or press downward by rotating the whole finger.

print it as it is, use 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm first layer, 0.1mm other layers (it's 0.3mm thickness) use concentric bottom surface pattern and maybe use a textured plate to provide a nice looking surface (mine looks like shit because i haven't replaced the faceplate yet). make sure your printer is dialed in and prints stuff with exact measurements. i used thin double sided tape to fix it to the bottom screen

I also am an ESDE bottom screen enjoyer. For now I've set it up so the screensaver is just a black screen. So when I launch a game, I back out of the game list then after a minute the screen "turns off"

I'm hoping they implement screensavers turning on inside a game list but for now it has to be this way. I know I can just turn off the bottom screen but this easier to me than doing it from the TCC menu

I set up lawnchair launcher last night. I removed the status bar from the top screen and set a plain black background. This makes the top screen also look off, so it's like launching a game turns it "on"

Just reputation mostly. Heard bad things about their batteries, their warranty, their software, and their customer support. Not saying other companies like Ayn or Retroid are perfect, but for a so called premium brand the only thing that lives up to it is the price point

I initially wanted the Ayaneo DS, and I think I made the right decision going with the Thor. If the Thor Portal ever comes, I'll be hopping on that so fast

For everyone else it's just...android and a settings option. Ayaneo actually develops software for Android. Might the kinds of games I play? I play almost exclusively RPGs where the bottom screen is a map or inventory so pretty static. However even in the menus and home screens it's pretty close. There are times when I see a difference but it isn't jarring to me like it is to some.

And if you were using like an external monitor I could see that case as the screen is so much bigger. I don't own any small LCD except the pocket ds

Replaced my fan. It's nowhere near as bad but I still get quiet lightsaber sounds on high fan speeds (not on quiet or smart). Is this the experience others have had or have AYN sent me another bad fan?

Considering it’s a different chipset (meaning it would require different recommended emulator settings, different recommended drivers, different expectations for gameplay performance, different alternative firmwares in terms of stuff like Linux, etc), it does arguably require being a separate channel anyways, much like the Odin 1 Lite.
