The Thor so far looks like it won’t have any downsides beyond being slightly smaller on the top screen and way smaller on the bottom screen, plus the controls will be cramped if you don’t go for the grip. But at the same time this is also using the same design as the Flip 2 for the Hinge, so while it is using the fix for the Flip 2, we don’t know if it’ll actually be a fix. In return, that makes it much more portable (to the point of potentially being outright pocketable) and its bottom screen is an OLED panel that is insanely power efficient (so that bottom screen should be draining literally the bare minimum of battery life).

The one outright confirmed issue so far with the Pocket DS is that the bottom screen is apparently “too soft”, which results in it being more prone to light bleed, but it’s got a decently bigger top screen, and the bottom screen is way bigger than the Thor’s alongside being also surprisingly really good in spite of being IPS, and it’s also got better trigger buttons and should arguably be better if you don’t want specifically a “likely pocketable” device but just a portable device that’ll fit in a shoulder/travel bag.

Long story short, since both are already effectively the same power in chipset and are both likely gonna be good for Dual Screen, I’d (with all we currently know about it) recommend the Thor if you want a more portable general use handheld, or the Pocket DS if you’re not bothered at all by the light bleed and specifically want a bigger and beefier handheld (with imo a much better software experience since from what I’ve seen so far, the dual screen stuff is effectively the same with each other but I do prefer, in terms of the more general non-dual-screen options, AyaSettings way more than Ayn’s Handheld settings).

Yup, just keep in mind that the Light Bleed on the bottom screen is definitely not a “maybe or maybe not” situation since it looks like it’s near guaranteed to happen with those panels (where the variance will be whether it’s egregiously bad or “literally only slightly noticeable on completely black images”), so I’d unfortunately still only recommend the Pocket DS if you know for a fact that you’ll be fine with light bleed being there to begin with.

It’s the reality of people having different preferences. Some people wouldn’t consider either handheld to be properly portable to begin with and would prefer the bigger handheld since it would be comfier to use (in which they wouldn’t get why “anyone would call the Thor ‘better since it’s portable’, neither of them are”. Others would see the Pocket DS as too big for them to comfortably use due to their hands being small (or maybe it’s too heavy for them to be comfortable with, etc), and so would prefer the Thor.

Likely because the best possible dual screen folding tablet you can find right now is the Surface Duo 2, which is not commercially available anymore, costs a ton to buy from resellers, and also is only a SD888 (which is still good, but not as good as the 8 Gen 2 or G3X Gen 2).

I'm excited to try GameHub FFX/X-2 with UnX, though.

My other issue that wasn't fixed is the screen tearing on the bottom screen when you have top at 120hz, I just don't use 120hz because of it (or I turn bottom screen off).

A frustration I have with the Thor is that if you accidentally brush against the bottom screen the controls all turn off, or rather they turn ON for the bottom screen now. So I'll be in the middle of a grueling boss fight or whatever, and then my character stops responding and it's because I barely touched the edge of the bottom screen.

Also, Nicole acknowledged Gamma's solution for screen tearing. They're interested in trying it. I'm seeing about getting him a dev unit.

Auto lock will change which screen the controls work on depending on which one you tap. You would have to tap on the top screen for them to work on that one again with auto

If you lock the controls to the top screen you can still use the touchscreen on the bottom without affecting the controls on the top

Yeah which is the case, but accidentally brushing bottom screen can lead to frustration, so then you need to lock to top. Not ideal, but I'm glad there's a manual option to force it.

Yeah focus lock is there specifically to help these situations so the controls dont suddenly stop working if you use the other screen

In that case I think an improvement would be to also add Focus Lock to the Quick Settings menu, so you don't have to access only from TCC.

Another solution is to simply turn off the 2nd screen from TCC if not needed, save some battery life too.

I took a look at my new 3DS XL and if you put pressure in the parts with a gap the top screen flexes just like the Thor

But of course the key difference here is the pressure is directly on the screen with the Thor

Where as New 3DS XL its plastic on plastic

The gap is also smaller on 3DS so the bending comes to a stop earlier

The middle plastic is also wider on 3DS meaning less likely to bend more

Anyways this is all speculation only time will tell how rugged this device is. As I want this to be a pocketable handheld with no protection I will wait for Thor 2 and buy it if Thor 1 will have no issues

I did the same with Flip 2. I didnt buy a Flip 2 due to Flip 1 hinge issues. Now that Flip 2 also has hinge issues I wont buy a Flip 3. If Flip 3 has good quality control then i may buy a Flip 4.

Hopefully in the meantime with all the waiting Gamehub and Switch emulation gets better

The only time I dropped a handheld is when I hurled my DS Lite across the room because the final dungeon in FFIII was driving me crazy🤣😭

It messed up the hinge a little bit but otherwise was completely fine, even now it is

Yes i cant justify this purchase unless Gamehub and Switch emulation reaches a point where less tinkering required, less bugs and crashes and more compatability

All my old handhelds have screen yellowing, another reason for emulation in the long run.

The extra clarity makes it more enjoyable and immersive from me
