#AYN Thor
1 messages · Page 9 of 1
Wow what a way to start your new rabbit hole
It's the one insurance I never buy but should with all the bills I've had
ive been a viewer for a long time, mainly watching russ and joey but never felt the need to pull the trigger
until the Thor got revealed
Is 16gb worth getting for switch emulation or is 12 good enough
Right. I wish this had been there when I started. I would have quit 😆
12 is good. 16 I would say only if you tinker with winlator
Get insurance for things where a surprise bill would ruin you.
For things where you're protecting a purchase you just need to weigh whether the risk of loss of the purchase is worth the insurance cost since the loss of money won't be a surprise, just a disappointment.
More than enough. Anything higher really only beneficial for winlator maybe PS3 if it ever gets off its fat ass
But what if you have switch up top and chrome open with 40 tabs down below hmm?
Then even 16GB won't be enough
Get better about organizing your life
Seriously tho android throws tabs in the back so it really doesn't matter
Those 40 tabs were about organizing your life
Yes what about us people who wanna emulate two switch games at the same time
Y'all coping that you're not getting fun toys
One friend is building a PC with 128gb ram purely because he's incapable of closing anything
Someone shit talking muh tabs?
Already did 👌
I hate open tabs. Bookmarks OP
Just to reassure your purchase. This is flip 1s DS with 50 and 100% brightness black screens
They release two pokemon games at a time for a reason, and that reason has always been to play both simultaneously on one device.
Oled or bust
Just picked up a white max. If it doesn't explode it's basically my endgame and I can stop following like 20 threads here
It's end game till the next cool thing comes out
Yeah
it'll be the final piece of my endgame puzzle, still don't think there'll ever be a 'one device to rule them all' situation
Steam Deck DS Lite OLED
What else do I need tho
Wake me when its an nvidia arm handheld running linux in a dual screen handheld
i never want an endgame
At least from abdroid
it means this hobby is over
Like what else could possibly beat this except them somehow making a chip that doubles battery life
Jailbroken switch 2 with oled is endgame lol
You want Linux, you're gonna get AMD. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
XR devices with no handheld screen.
You mean walking around with goofy glasses on?
Same thing that will probably replace phones.
Just preordered
in the future/endgame they won’t be goofy. Maybe not even glasses.
I actually just put 128gb in my pc an hour ago. Im sitting at 107g. Used right now
must be all my chrome tabs
Conceptually future generations will just have it direct to brain.
Dude. Like WTF are you running?
Chrome with 1 tab open
LOL
If that made sense sure. Lol
Nah nvidia arm only supports linux and android. If only people at valve were working x86 to arm conversion stuff. Oh wait, they are...
But then maybe flat video games as we know them will probably be an archaic nonevent anyway, like nobody will even want to play traditional videogame. It would be like people wanting to play ball and cup or juggle balls for fun.
GLM4.5
No dis’ on jugglers 😅
Like honestly if you're at 108 there's some virus eating your resources
Interesting take
Eh. I'd consider AI a virus
I preordered the purple thor but curious to see whats the most popular
Cant get viruses on linux though
Maybe urs
Nah, the operating system will find a way to use it. Unused RAM is a waste.
I would have picked purp if it wasnt locked to 12gb and up
Aw. Don't get defensive of your model
sudo rm -rf *
Think of it as insurance
It'll still love you
I am confused about the different worry free prices. I am not sure which is the correct one to select? I dont want to over paid for it nor do I want to under pay and find I dont have enough coverage.
I see there is a default assigned when selecting the pre-order but I hear others have different prices selected for them.
Does anyone know if this is based on location?
Sudo deeze nuts
Dont be jealous I got gemini at home
Wow. You can get a shittier version of just googling 😆
Got 3 wrong responses today from Google AI
Kinda wild
I stopped using Google Search a while back and mainly use DuckDuckGo now
It's just based on your cart total, the default assigned should be fine.
I use Duck too…F G.
Chat GPT for homework, makes wonderful practice tests. AI in the search engine, worse than retro handheld e waste
If you want to waste time doing 4 google searching and reading 8 threads when gemini can do it for you at once, welp. Have at it
Man. You're slow at internet
Takes a couple seconds to find most answers
Can't wait for a whole generation of doctors who don't actually know anything.
I can't tell if @red cairn is 15 or 59 xD
Haha. Gotta be one or the other 😆
AI is great for people who already have a base level of knowledge though.
Is it time for healing from the sun and drinking herbs with the tauren chieftain? Reject modern medicine /s
Like let me tell you about a time when we had to parse information and think critically
The best is when you're on stack overflow and the correct efficient code is the 4th post down
I heard some got charged a $1.28.
They charging me $10.19.
Maybe there cart was larger.
Reddit is the best google search method for me currently. For reviews, troubleshooting something, etc.
Whatever I am looking for + reddit
Nah. There were 2 insurances
Cause lord knows why
Reddit is good for answering things about what is the best product for X. There's usually a subreddit with actual professionals in the field
More like 69 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
Definitely 15
Yeah thats why this conversation is kinda sad
Rather be mistaken for 15 than 30
Because you don't? Buck up buddy. It could be great for you one day!
Asking something to ai is like asking some random guy who's hallucinating on something on the spot.
Generative AI is great for sketchups/rough protos. Nothing actually production worthy. Especially in any form of manufacturing. Machine learning is great for human in the loop processes. LLMs are just kinda dumb search engines if your bad at searching to begin with
"it only takes one second for me to find answers😂😂😂"
Aight sounds like youre looking shit thats not complicated. Simple as
Guys chill, it’s a hand held forum.
I do digital signal processing so not likely. But you'll be ok
Chill Brah
Whats the signal? A poo poo fart? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
But yeah. LLMs are just a curse. Environment destroying lack of thought machines that will gradually get dumber and less expressive as we stop making the things it uses to learn. But it's marketable and people eat it up because it lowers their need for thought. That's the last I'll say on it here
15 might have been generous 😆
Mfw google puts out a paper that one gemini request is the equivalent of watching tv for 9 seconds so you sitting down to watch one episode of breaking bad is like more power than 1000 ai prompts
Cool numbers bro
You got me. Numbers go up
It is funny that everyone who is marketer or brags about AI sounds like a used car salesman. "This beauty has 800 horses. Just look at those shiny rims. And tires. Kick em. Bet you've never kicked tires like that. This car will change your life"
But yeah. Back on topic. White max is mine
Will be cool if makers do some cool buttons for it
Pulled the trigger on the Pro when I initially planned on Base. Didn't want to leave any performance on the table and 16gb seemed excessive lol
I got a white pro! What color buttons do you think would look good with it?
I did the same, changed my mind at the last second
I got the Max because it was cheaper to get that than Pro + 1tb SD card
I wanna see if I can find buttons and dpad in a dark cherry red. Figure it'd go nice with the grey accents it already has
Might try to customize more of it if I can as I go
Something like this
Would prefer even darker red tho
That's pretty nice!
That purple was super friggin tempting tho
And the transparent models have a better hinge history har har
But yeah. I always liked the way this looked even if I never owned one
If we lived in a perfect world I would get the black model
handhelds, headphones, watches - no hobby should have an end, that's not the idea
i like that we get continuous innovation, it's just good to be choosy about when to dip in and out
They already said that the Thor's buttons are bigger and quieter than the portals. So we might have to wait for custom buttons for a while
I’m on team black (hopefully) don’t crack
Apologies as I’ve not ordered anything post tariffs. If I get a Thor, will there be an additional tariff charge or is it covered by the shipping? Edit: I’m in the US
Tariffs are not covered by shipping, it’s your cost. Whether you actually gets charged depends on the courier and how it’s declared by AYN
4px has managed to circumvent them so far, dhl will definitely charge them
DHL is much more likely to have charges
I do have a resin printer. Just never tried doing buttons
Maybe I'll give it a shot
Screw it, I just bought the stupid thing lol
I got the White Pro
I did the Paypal in 4 dealio. I did it with the Odin 2 Pro as well.
So $93ish now, and three more of that in the next month and a half.
Makes it an easier pill to swallow imo.
Yeah. I always have one handheld in PayPal 4 pay rotation. Lol. I just make sure to keep it to 1
I usually end up paying it in full well before even the third payment's dead line
But yeah, paypal is confusing me atm.
Since I got most of the way through the purchase, including the approval of the 'loan'. Then backed out and decided I did want to get the insurance. And then when I went through the purchase again it just skipped the paypal menu and went to "and it's paid!".
Paypal itself still just shows one purchase though.
Wow they already updated the shipping change I requested via email and refunded me the difference 🤘
they're quick, good cs
Nice to see, this is my first ayn device.
Yeah they're pretty quick like that.
I’ll let you know after I (likely) cancel my pocket ds order 😂
One of the reason I like Ayn
I have added a couple items before or remove them from orders and they usually respond in a day.
Also to be honest the fact I was able to order a custom build once makes me really like them lol.
Custom build?
Really? If I ask for black buttons on white, maybe??!
I just want to be able to buy different face button colors to install myself
:/
I got the white explicitly so I could hopefully not worry as much about the glass front lol
I hate it too, it's really obnoxious imo that almost all the mid-high/high tier handhelds are going with glass fronts.
But black matches the glass front the most
And black smudges the absolute most out of any other color lmao
I don't mind
Same
Looks and feels premium imo
I see why it could be annoying though
Really? To me it's the opposite lol.
ayn should change their plastic texture/quality to avoid fingerprints like retroid or even anbernic
I've never liked glossy things that need to be held in the hand/used with fingers.
It looks nice for 0.1 second and then is smudged to shit.
Just one example but is it only me who thinks the regular Odin 2 looks way cheaper than the portal 2
I know it is cheaper
The gloss may look MODERN and premium, but it doesn't even slightly feel RETRO and premium.
Look vs feel is another big thing.
I mean I don't want to feel like a toy
I much prefer a nice feeling textured plastic, than the glossy glass.
I do
Yeah for me it really depends on the device
Switch 2 feels like a toy to you?
i like my anbernic 28xx plastic more than odin 2, it just keeps fingerprints so much and so quick
Same
It's one of the situations where I like that it isn't glass, switch 2 feels really premium imo. Same with steam deck
I didn't have that problem, but from what I've heard the black units were way more smudgy.
I got a transparent blue Odin 2 and never noticed any smudges.
Lemme take a step back; Steam Deck and Switch 2 nail the finish I want. My phone DOES not xD
I want a matte or rugged surface for my hands.
its not even funny
Oh geeze
Yeah I agree
Yeah, that's also part of why I avoid black units lol
The Steam Deck is the only opaque black handheld I've had that doesn't get smudged to hell.
I would take a switch 2/steam deck finish over portal 2/Thor glass front everyday lol
Yea I'm the total opposite. Like I'm fine with the Switch 2. But I would certainly like it more if it had a glass finish
even the 28xx finish is much better than odin 2
Das krezy to me but interesting
Honestly glass front is whatever on most normal handhelds. Just feels especially weird for a clamshell imo.
cant stand glass fronts as well
I bring it up because most people who played on the original 3DS, didn't like the experience specifically because 1) it was cramped and 2) it was glossy AF and a finger print magnet. A lot of the XL models had matte finishes. All of the door stop models were similar to Steam Deck finish. 2DS XL had a weird in between
Light bleed on an OLED screen ??
hopefully review units can show how much better it would be eventually
I love my New 2DXL because of the shape but I miss the og 3ds feel
I'm pretty sure they mean light bleed in a different way than what most people do.
Light bleed as in the light of the screen coming out from the plastic. Rather than weird bright spots on the edges of the screen itself.
I could be wrong though.
Yeah going from the 3DS XL, which was a nice matte handheld, to the glossy New 3DS XL was pretty frustrating.
All my clamshells I own (that people make anyway) I buy those clear glossy cases lol
oh no.....
I also have a TPU shell on mine
There it is ig
I'd put one on the 34XX Sp but it's slightly wider than a real sp
So no case for it
Anyway I'm glad AYN is including a clear case for the Thor
I suppose
Fingers crossed!!
I wonder if I could request something like this...
I don't think you could go quite that far. But the black buttons and stick caps probably would be fine. I would hope.
I went all in Max Purple.
I actually messaged Ayn Customer Service with a similar request lol.
Do they do stuff like that?
Interesting.
#1407322274071314492 message
I also asked them if they couldn't, how much it'd be to just buy the buttons lol.
They haven't gotten back to me yet, but who knows.
I'm more than willing to just take a "no" lol. I figured it couldn't hurt to just ask.
Im gonna ask for rainbow buttons on the purple
I just like the panda look much more than solid white.
Same for tuxedo look over solid black
It's why one of my RG28XX is a transparent black unit, with all white buttons.
Looks nice.
I had to go orange for that, im a sucker for orange handhelds (or unique colors) irs why i went purple here.
Pls dont tell these companies that ill buy a handheld if its orange tyia.
Lol
Way back when I asked Retroid if I could get black buttons with the funtastic Grape model instead of the skittle ones ot came with and they said yes. I figured they would just send the black ones as extras but my unit came with the black buttons installed with the skittle ones as extras. Made me a big Retroid fan for a while.
Discount code?
I asked for rainbow buttons on my order ill let you know if they respond.
@noble finch glad to see you got in, you helped me spend $512usd tonight
I maxed out my purple and bought the bag of toys to go with it
Im flirting with adding the pack to cart, also got max purple. I just dont think I want the tpu shell though
Which color grip did you go for?
I justified because of the grip and grip case + screen protector, especially because of the cutouts. Black grip.
Those alone worth $50 to me
The bag, tpu, wrist strap stuff is whatever
Your saving money too its 10$ more separately and no soft pouch option
Oh nm there is a soft pouch so your basically getting the case free... i think ill bite, you convinced me.
My biggest decision to make now is whether to even open my dimensity flip2.
It’s still in the package from China state
Lol, is it returnable? never tried that with retroid.
Nah and once it’s stateside eBay is actually a great option
Looking like I could get $200-220 so, basically money back…
@vast ibex If the odin 2 buttons wind up working
I thought it was already confirmed that O2 buttons will not work?
It has
Didnt know that thanks
Heh my gf wouldn't allow me go get rid of RP5 she found Osmdin too big
Always spiraling ... aya is only place that hasn't banned him yet ... so he needs to cocxsuck
Ah. That makes sense
Like don't get me wrong, Ayaneo's is cool too. But more than half that list is just personal preference
Well….Pocket DS cancelled and Black/Pro ordered 🤷🏻♂️😅
Seeing how many people gave Ayn their money again, it looks like people forgot about how Ayn handled the previous devices. Especially the Odin 1 and Loki
Seems like you forgot that the Odin 2, mini and Portal were all fine lol
I mean, they handled my Odin 2 just fine.
Yeah, that's true
But there's no guarantee that a new form factor won't trip them up again
And just $10 discount isn't worth it at all
Better to wait for actual reviews instead preordering base on some rendered images
So what was the issue with the Odin 1? I heard all about the Loki, but I guess I missed the Odin 1's drama
They have released a real image of it as well
I mean, not exactly the best real world images to base a purchase tbf
That doesn't inspire any confidence from me though. I can barely say that it isn't a pre-rendered image
The odin base and pro were largely fine outside of some initial delays. The Odin lite gave them a headache with the D900 chip. It was a last minute upgrade for them and those orders were delayed significantly. It didn't help that this whole release was done during Covid as well
Thats up to you lol but its still a physical device and more will come along with videos as they have done with previous devices
Worst comes to worst I can always recoup most of the loss by selling it here tbh.
I'm not selling my Odin 2 Mini until a while after the Thor gets to me.
That's why I think it's better to wait more. Just $10 discount isn't worth it to preorder yet
Going from not having a prototype at all to shipping in mid-October seems so fishy
I'm one of those peeps that believes that Retroid and Ayn are basically the same company, so Flip 2 to Thor doesn't seem like a substantial jump.
I bought the new toy because I wanted the new toy essentially.
Tribalism with Chinese handhelds. Every day humanity tumbles deeper into the abyss.
I'm guessing his crashout is because both AyaNeo and Ayn are releasing DS handhelds at the same time he's trying to sell his external screen?
That's also the reason that I afraid the plastic problem of the hinge
It’s hard to convince me Retroid and Ayn are not deeply connected. Thor is basically Flip 2 with additional screen and remove the lid logo
The hinge design is the same
The Retroid Pocket 5 and the Odin 2 Portal are virtually identical
And people are saying “this is common because companies source the same parts from same suppliers”
I don’t see similarities outside of these two companies
Same
Anbernic and Ayaneo have very different parts
They use the same sticks and dpads. And sometimes their buttons are even compatible with each other.
The flip 2 and Thor triggers buttons are identical too
Imma huff the copium and believe ayn learned from their retroid brothers and will improve on whatever fuck up led to the flip 2 hinge issues. I doubt they want to have to deal with a bunch of returns
They're separate companies, in a sense. But obviously very tightly connected. Both are owned by Moorechip iirc. And they make products in the same handheld market, with Retroid being the mid-tier and Ayn being the high-tier. In terms of price/performance.
Like, acting as if they're two completely different companies, akin to Anbernic, Powkiddy, and AyaNeo is just being silly.
Now Anbernic, how about a RG477DS, join the club
The three "A"s of DS
Curious to see Anbernic’s dual screen devices too. I think their edge would be making a budget friendly device that focuses on DS, like MagicX Zero 40.
Rumors say they have two DS screens in the pipeline. One uses Linux and the other Android
Presumably one budget, one mid tier
For me the problem is that all the chips in that cheaper Linux tier I've seen, can't actually do all DS.
Which, me being super picky, is what I'd want for a handheld designed around its console theme.
Yeah it needs to be more powerful than H700
Obviously higher tier stuff with like Android, I'm willing to forgive a lot due to the software side.
Like, I'm not gonna give my Odin 2 Mini with PlayStation buttons shit for not being able to play all Vita games. 1, the emulator is still in its pretty early days, 2, a decent amount of games used stuff like the touchpad.
Gotta be stronger than the A133+ as well imo.
Is Ayn black plastic known to be more smudgy than Retroids? Also has their white devices ever been known to have discoloration issues?
What chip did the action Pi have
I thought that was fine for ds
What what I saw anyway
Reviews often miss flaws. Better wait for real people to get them, and see how they go after a few months of wear.
But if everybody did that, nobody would ever know. You need some suckers.
Reporting for sucker duty, 16GB White.
It had an A527 which is stronger than the A133+
Thanks for your service
Ah, you got the Max White.
I cheaped out and got the Pro White
I figure I can just use the 1TB card from my Odin 2 Mini for the big stuff, (GC, Wii, PS2, etc) and 256GB is more than good enough for all my older console games. If I even put them on there. Still more than happy with 16 and 8 bit consoles on my RG34XX as my every day carry.
Also the combo of RG34XX and Ayn Thor is just coming to me as hilarious.
The Not-GBA and the Not-3DS.
Yeah, I figured why not. All I care about is 3DS, but I’ll probably end up replaying Just Cause 2, Red Dead & GTAs
Yeah, DS and 3DS is a big reason why I got this thing.
I've found I'm just not a huge fan of single screen DS at a time.
Even if a ton of games barely use both screens.
Ye like I got this mostly for ds and 3ds, and also not sure if the product is any good so i picked the lite. So if It doesn't work well or has some major flaws I didn't lose as much money 🤔
Ooh where can I read more about these rumours? I'd love a DS "XX" device from Anbernic
Can we choose the physical layout of the ABXY buttons? I would much prefer XBOX style for it.
A very affordable Ds would be awesome yes , but at that point I feel it's almost better to stick with the original Ds since u won't have much upscaling u could preform on a low end chip ?
Thing is that, at least in my experience, a ton of old DSs' screens are yellowed as hell.
my ancint DSi seem supriringly fine
They didn‘t say anything more unfortunately
They may outsource their product designs to the same company. Rather than being in house. 🤷🏻♂️ there are so many possibilities but we will never know
In any case, they are deeply connected in many ways.
I think the only info is this screenshot from Anbernic QQ group: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/886938925380272188/1398778958253916331/d1f776f0-1f0e-490f-b3de-d7a7aa593dc7.png?ex=68ae26eb&is=68acd56b&hm=db867f9584de9aad7e07b02933e24da4a0dd32433006205df7b36ae44c5289e5&
All companies are like that. Even Apple, their screens are made by Samsung and LG. 🤷🏻♂️ which im sure the same panels are used in android phones. As long as the end product is good and works. Does it really matter 😅😅😅😅
People need to not get hung up on how similar the two companies are
I would say that’s very different from those companies.
I personally want to know if they are deeply connected, then I can guess they have shared information about the development and testing, in this case, the hinge, and hope it will improve on Thor
And again, Retroid and Ayn are both owned by Moorechip, so they're already more tied together than most of those other companies you mentioned.
I imagine the truth is mostly in the middle of the "Retroid and Ayn are the same company" jokes/copes and "Retroid and Ayn are completely different company" statements.
I finally looked up how bad the hinge issues are on the Flip 2 and it kind of freaked me out ngl. I decided with the Thor I will just wait half a year to see if there's any similar issues. Maybe i'll even get one of the Odin 2 devices in the meantime. I just need to resist the urge to get the shiny new thing
Odin 2 Mini + Retroid Dual Screen seems like a decent alternative imo. I was thinking going that route since I already have an O2M.
But new toy NEW TOY
The Retroid dual screen thing just looks really clunky and ugly to me. I care a lot about the aesthetics of my devices, maybe a little too much
For me it's mostly fine. Especially if I'd only use it for two consoles.
But eh, I decided I wanted shiny new thing, with more native support than the nothing I'd get using the O2M with the RDS since they're technically two different companies. So no OTA support like the RP5 and RPMini would get.
Didn't the dual screen had like major lag?
From what I've heard it's a decent amount of lag, but with the OTA update or whatever, it's basically as low as you can reasonably go.
Which is somewhat what killed my enthusiasm for the screen with my Odin 2 Mini
I mean to be fair for it's price point it probably is still a really good solution.
Yeah
I still think the RDS is a great solution for if you already have a mid-high or high power Android device.
But I think something like the Thor or maybe even the Pocket DS are good if you don't and want dual screens.
I just find it amusing that I've said in the past I'd kill for an Odin 2 Flip, and Ayn just skips past that to make an Odin 2 DS lmao.
Ooo, I just thought of a good idea I can do with my Odin 2 Mini besides just sell it to recoup loss. Turn into a docked system.
not the 2S! 😮
I was using my 2s yesterday, first time in a while 😄
Can't wait to use the Thor as a daily driver in my pocket and as like a quasi phone haha
I look at my 20+ consoles that mostly just sit on the shelf and can't sell them... I will occasionally pick one up and play with on it a little and then put it back, tho
Can't or don't want to
can't because I don't want to 😛
I rotate a lot of mine so they don't feel sad and lonely they don't get used 😄
nah, I genuinely like the way they look and would be sad if I didn't have any of them anymore
I think atleast every emulator handheld I have has some niche about it that don't make them irelevant to others
but I did sell a bunch before that got replaced by either their better variant or something that made their use-case more relevant (albeit for a limited amount of time)
I have 5 now and I want to keep it at that. But it’s so hard to resist getting these shinny new toys.
I get way too attached to my consoles and handhelds to ever do that haha
Since they're all emulation boxes, I'm not too upset to sell them.
Though I do miss the fun color era of handhelds.
The pocket dmg was supposed to be my last to fill in all my needs, but then we finally got a ds shaped handheld
The green RP2S and red RP4 looked amazing in person.
I have 34XX, 40XXV, RP Classic, RP Flip 2 and Surface Duo 1. Out of these I can only get rid of 40XXV.
RP Classic has fun colors
Hurt a bit to sell them, but I was not using the RP2S at all, and the RP4 Pro barely saw any use after I got the Odin 2 Mini.
RP Classic is bascially the only one recently. Most mid-high and up handhelds are still just "Black, white, grey, and maybe one fun option".
Trimui Brick
With the metallic Hammer
I would not call the Trimui Brick a mid-high power tier handheld lol
The budget handhelds are mostly fine in this regard.
Oh I didn’t know you meant mid-high tier only
Ayaneo yellow is your cup of tea then
RP Classic is bascially the only mid-high and up that I would agree had a good amount of fun color options.
like for the 3DS, I had the 3DS XL, new 3D SXL and then settled for the new 3DS 😛
That still falls under "and one color option" lol.
Same as the transparent purple or transparent blue of the Thor or Flip 2 respectively.
I want to get a modern version of all main corpo handhelds
My first and I still love it
Same 🙂
I think I have the rg351v, funkey s, analogue pocket, pocket dmg, and Thor in the future.
Love that.
If Anbernic makes a ds lite clone I’ll get it
It's also liek chepsest external oled on the market even without the clip
I have a Vita and used to have the Odin2 at the time... didn't want this one at all 😅
I traded my Odin 2 for an Odin 2 Mini lol
You need a horizontal
But yeah, I guess Mario Galaxy may end up being my last game played on my Odin 2 Mini before the Thor comes out.
About a third of the way through it
I always been bigger on vertical handhelds, but I've considered getting one for switch, but at this moment switch still feels a bit to janky for me
Im going to avoid FOMO and see how hinges holdup. And atleast sell one of my devices before I buy one (RP Classic or 477M)
I've only had one vertical, and it was my first retro emulation handheld. The OG RG35XX.
done 😄
Based
If its similar to RP Flip 2 I assume Purple hinge will hold up the best
Probably
didnt want all accessories but the ones that i seleced .. were almost 50 anyway so jsut went with the pack
from chemical standpoint, the less dye needed to dye a color means more bonding material = more stronger plastic = less brittle.
Black is the weakest, sounds about right, judging from flip 2
I sold mine to get the RP5 iirc, and then sold that one to get the Flip 2 😛
It would annoy me immensely if they make very similar but not exactly the same color
So White should be fine right
black plastic have larger risk nowadays compare to in the past.
black plastic in the past was considered stronger because it pure polypellet with carbon dye.
but nowadays there's shitton of recycled plastic, they just melt everything and addin cheap blackdye
NO WAIT, I AM NOT TRYINGTO DEFAME ANYONE
Nooo, I have black haha.
Most people got black, though that's just due to the nature of Lite and Base being black color only
can't 100% confirm, because there's not really a "white" raw polypellet...
just take resin color as an example.
raw resin is more kin to yellowish transparent color
Eh, honestly I'm not too worried about it.
Want to see real life photos of other colors
yeap, shouldn't worry too much about it.
The real life photos of the black model looks so beautiful, almost like rendered
Maybe they are rendered images
Candid photos and professional photos are pretty different tbf.
judging from RP Flip 2 experience, i think they'll pretty much solved the issue in their production.
if you really do worried, get other color instead of black. lol
I just see how it plays out.
Since Ayn said they're shipping them out in mid-october, one could always cancel before then I'm sure.
Has Ayn actually said yes we see what happens to other clamshells and looked to fix the design flaw if not what makes you so confident?
Has a Flip 2 Black newer models with redesigned hinges been out in the wild yet
Based on the fact the hinge design looks exactly the same, no actual comment from Ayn if its different I will wait it out
we can hope they fixed it, but atm it is just an assumption
Assumption based on what?
New design? Comments from Ayn?
With the purple transparent we need to find out if the plastic is similar to transparent Flip 2. Or the transparent Flip 1 which had issues
The transparent flip 1 was the only colour that didn't have issues.
I don't know 😄 im on your side here, it's why I'm on the fence and that 10$ difference means I have no issue waiting for reviews before i put down money
I could have sworn one of the transparent models had issues
The transparent plastic was a different texture
They wont say anything publicly, they won't say anything about being connected to retroid, even if it's super obvious. I mean if you've ever taken apart both devices it's pretty clear they share design teams, likely share manufacturers aswell for plastics and rubbers.
There was only one transparent colour for the flip 1, watermelon red.
For the moment it goes:
345: Nope
44: Yes (Sport Red)
22: Yes (Watermelon)
19: Yes (16 bits)
10: Yes (Indigo)
19: Yes (Black)
Old reddit post for Flip 1 hinge issues
and then, if i try to order from retroid, 45$ ups is the only option (even for the dual screen attachment) while for ayn i can order using 4px cheaper. if they share so much, why the heck can't they share shipping options
Could be a volume issue. Retroid being cheaper devices usually pushes a lot more volume.
Theres a lot of reasons to limit shipping options from product to product. At Amazon we have products that are exclusively "white hand" deliveries. If you ever see a normal car delivering packages those are "white hand". Which products varies immensely from location to location and even tone of the year.
Even excluding hinge issues its worth waiting to see how everything else holds up
don't get me wrong, i'm grateful that they had only that option, they prevented me from ordering the RDS and then Ayn announced Thor and they lost me as a potential customer
Is the buttons and Triggers good? Software issues? Input lag issues?
Battery drain issues etc
odin2 portal doesn't have input lag or battery drain
Thats another product
yeah, but knowing ayn, they don't go backwards, they improve from device to device
but i get you, if in doubt, wait for reviews
I think reviews will be out before shopping so still can cancel
Battery might be an issue with both screens. Especially if youre using higher brightness
Only the longterm effect you cant judge i guess
You just never know like software for 2 screens can cause input lag
Controls are safe, not my favorite but nothing to point at as objectively bad.
even other people's reviews are biased and based on personal preference, so things like button sounds, trigger feeling, hand positioning won't necessarily match your own experience
Hinge is an unknown, potentially could be a problem but only time will tell.
Eben when in folded position would their be movement etc causing damage
Is the flip angle comfortable
Software is not ayns strong suit. Expect them to fix major issues, but minor ones will likely be ignored.
Tho linux is a valid option.
a lot of unknowns, but if they respond to hinge issues like retroid, anyone with issues might get a new device/refund/odin 3
I wish Linux just had decent sleep batteru drain
Rocknix just isnt there yet
And we dont know if it will ever get better
kind reminder that not every retroid flip2 has issues(not yet!)
Could AYN provide a workaround for the broken hinge plastics by giving/selling replacement shells?
I'm just curious with hinges, like, at what point is it just one or two people, out of the thousands that bought something, getting unlucky (see spicy pillow battery issues with an Anbernic device), and at what point is it a wide spread actual issue. Like the Flip 1's hinge especially.
this is very weird since the processor clearly has the proper sleep states as android can make use of them, so there is no hardware limit
Flip 2 hinges seem widespread. Just way too many posts
If Linux did have that nice deep sleep mode I'd kill for it on my Odin 2 Mini. It's one of the biggest reasons why Rocknix was just a novelty I set up and then used once or twice and never again.
Rocknix has the advantage of less input lag. Remembering seeing comparison of Rocknix input lag vs Android on RP5
Difference was quite substantial
Portmaster is also cool
I'm thankful that I don't really notice input delay too much. It has to get very noticeably off before I can't instinctively adjust to it.
Like trying to stream from my PS5 to my Odin 2 Mini felt pretty bad. But just emulating stuff on it feels fine.
Hope the shovel knight devs new game gets a portmaster release soon after the official release
Well Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon got a port, so I wouldn't be surprised if Mina the Hollower does.
Yeah it's likely to get one, I just hope it's made relatively quickly
Has anyone done FEX translated games on the odin devices running rocknix
That maybe a better performing alternative to winlator but doesn't support android
FEX translated? Don't think I've heard of that?
An alternative to box64 (what winlator uses) https://fex-emu.com/
A fast linux usermode x86 and x86-64 emulator
Oh neat
And probably the thing allowing some pc games to run on Valve's deckard directly if rumors are to be believed
I've messed with Winlator, I can actually get things working a bit nowadays, but I still find it too much of a hassle for what I want to do lol.
Really, I just want to play fan games with it lmao. And whether they work out of the box is a very case-by-case situation.
Winlator is still bleeding edge, I've found a lot of GoG games install/run the best on it but even then some have controller issues
GoG games are basically the only thing I've gotten to work on it consistently.
Many own a PC handheld or Deck these days and i think at that point winkator aint worth the hassle
Thats the main reason I wont be bothering with any model above the 300 dollar SKU
RIP the panda dream
panda?
I ordered a white Thor, but asked if they could replace the buttons/thumb caps with black ones.
oh yeah ... customization like this might be problem in preorders
Now I've replied asking if I could just buy the black buttons/thumb caps myself to do myself later.
i remember having similar request for RPMini 😄
and ended up getting hat i wanted in the end for free thx to the screen thing
lol
(aka had SFC and wanter black back and they basicallys aid they cant change during production but that i should ask later after initial shipping is done)
amd thx to the screen thing i got it anyway
But yeah, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask
So they ended up not doing the colored buttons on the white, huh? Shame. Now I’ve gotta decide between the grey rainbow or the black. 🤔
Most of my handhelds are black. And black + OLED for invisible bezels is a strong selling point. But those rainbow buttons are just so darn cool.
Does the dual screen melonDS fork allow stretching the bottom screen to remove black bars?
youc an set your own layout
Can it be October yet?
The poll was very confusing. It was about colored prints not colored buttons (skittles)
who has preordered? 😄
of course you did 😛
I mean, we did provide pictures of both options lol
I know and I thought you made a mistake. Those two photos looked the same
Looking at the Thor's dimensions in CompareSizes.com, and yeah, it's a little crazy how small it really is closed. Just comparing it to my RG34XX, and it's not that much bigger.
Havent bought a handheld for months…then this dropped 🥹 went purple pro, may upgrade to max!
I went White Pro, since I was a bit worried about how well smudges would show on the Purple.
Man so tempted so slap a preorder on this. The hinge does worry me although I've had no issues with my Flips. I feel the spec on this is basically perfect. The size seems pretty similar to the Flip 2. I'd prefer a bit smaller to throw it in a pocket. I feel like this or the Ayaneo Phone will be potential endgame device for me
Did the transparent Odin 2 have fingerprint issues? I feel like they werent visible as well
I probably should have gone purple to help with black bars. But the white was calling me
Plus every retro handheld from my childhood had big ass different colored bezels. I'll live. Feel like edge to edge screens spoiled us
I never noticed fingerprints or smudges on my transparent blue Odin 2.
Granted, I would be a tad worried with the transparent purple of the Thor, because it's so dark and the glassfront also looks very dark, so it could show smudges pretty well.
It's why I went with white, which I almost never do with handhelds.
I feel like it'd hide the fingerprints a bit better than the two darker colors.
Glass is just smudgy in general lol
I'm like 99 percent sure the actual purple will be brighter. If the ice blue flip 2 is anything to go by
I think that's the biggest problem with transparent renders
They're never quite the same
But yeah. This being wrapped in glass means fingerprints. That said who doesn't have them on their phone daily. It's like I'm fine with it on glass but die when it's on black plastic 😆
Fair, the colors are almost always really weird in renders and profesional images vs real life.
Thing is the entire glass part of my phone lights up and hides all but the worst of smudges. The entire glass part of a handheld does not.
Yeah. Valid. I mean I went white cause I like white on portable stuff. But that's another good reason
Tbh I want to pre-order really badly. But 3DS emulation :/
It'll do that
3ds will not be a problem 😄 8 gen 2 crushes vast majority of the library at high upscale without blinking
Yeah. Def good to go
Damn these looks great 🔥! Starting to come around to thinking this may be the better overall DS package compared to Ayaneo’s offering. The Oled + LCD screen comparison, the poor quality sound from speaker and missing headphone jack on Ayaneo are shortcomings. The joysticks also look smaller and more recessed for some reason on Ayaneo.
Ayaneo wins on screen size but that’s really about it I think
Maybe also software as we don’t know what Ayn is cooking yet
as much as I like 3d feature of the n3ds line of devices I think a high resolution oled screen with fast forward, save states, video out and upscaling is an objectively better experience.
Yeah. You basically listed all the things that nudged me in that direction. I also mentioned the more recessed sticks and I feel like people tried to gaslight me about it. Lol
Yeah, not just more recessed but also just look shorter / thinner if that makes sense. Seems like a more limited range of motion compared to the Ayn ones
Oh 100%. In like 99.9% of cases the 3d feature didn't really add anything to actual game play. I'm not saying it's not cool, because it def is
There doesn't exist perfect 3DS emulation today.
I imagine there'd have to be some display sacrifices to get 3d working as well.
I agree. The sound for a device that can cost over $600 is not acceptable. The Thor is smaller but is close to that original 3DS/ 3DSxl size and that really appeals to me.
Def looks like it'd be a tight radius
Even my PC will have glitches here and there.
My favorite games that utilized the 3d well were kid icarus uprising, super mario 3d land and zeld ocarina of time 3d
game changer to play those in 3d
Yeah I’ve done a whole 180 on the Thor as every bit of new info and images that have come out just keeps tipping the scale more in its favor. These images just pretty much nailed it.
The phone will likely be last on their list. It requires a lot of certifications which cost the company millions. Plus agreement from carriers to support device. Thats if carriers don’t pull a huawei and say no. Imagine that device is only in early concept stage at the moment.
I think accuracy is the word I am looking for? None of the emulators today have 100% emulation accuracy. Graphical or audio glitches, shader caching. Somehow Wii U also needs shaders but we are able to pre-load them and my entire Wind Waker experience has been smooth as butter.
Eh. Might be before Next 2. Feel like that one is gonna be aways away. But yeah. Even after preorders it's probably gonna be like a 6 month wait
They don't do that anymore. It muddles up the assembly process.
Doesn't dolphin basically has a 99% playability rating?
Interesting. I mean can always do a personal swap
i bet it wont be problem after the inital production
On 8gen2 you can basically get everything buttery smooth up to ps3
If the black does the same smudging, I’ll have to switch to white or rainbow
Going to hold with my Duo 2 for now as I am covered with 3DS and DS but damn the urge to resist will be loosening once these get in hand of reviewers for sure. Ability for Wii U and PS3, Switch on one device is very attractive..
If they can make that transparent purple really shine through I’ll be sold
that's kinda false since ps2 doesn't have a full compatibility on android because it stopped developement years ago
but maybe winlator then ps2 emulation inside that could work? Never had experience with it
Or linux PS2 emu
WOW that's... incredibly small. Longer yes, but definitely not thicker
Not to mention xbox
Thor should have linux support eventually right? I wonder what that would mean for xbox emulation.
Pretty fast id imagine. Doing dual display on Linux is probably less of a hassle then android
There's mention of linux support directly on the product page, it'll probably be quickly released
Should be able to circumvent having locked refresh rates on both displays as well. Should...
I would probably setup a dual boot on my device in case I want to play android games for some reason. Aside from that linux is easily preferable.
It'll be incredibly fast to get linux on this thing, especially with it having the same chip as the Odin 2 line and the RP5 line
Another plus for the 16+1TB model, all android on internal and all rocknix on the external
How would dual boot even work? From what I understand, to run Linux you basically put the OS on its own SD card.
It's one of the reasons why people auto praising the pocket DS for having a stronger chipset is way less of a draw for me
I mean, 8g2 is still gonna emulate basically everything anyway.
Not that rocknix won't be figured out on the G3 series at some point anyway
The G3xgen2 is only a stronger GPU right?
Granted, a more powerful chip supposedly means that the chip itself works less hard at the same tasks.
Yep
you can do rockinx in a way android sees external sd too
True, just target wherever you have your roms on the SD card
The only place this is actually bottlenecked in power when comparing would likely be winlator. And even then if you go on ayn discord and see what they've gotten running on O2 portal max it's super impressive
While the ayaneo flagship soc is technically slightly stronger the lack of support makes the 8 gen 2 much more appealing
Like tomb raider with high settings and near 50 fps
Just having multiple partitions on the sd should be able to do that pretty well
Honestly the only part I'm not looking forward to is setting up daijisho again.
Granted I learned from the second time, just export all the settings. But it's still gonna be annoying.
I've set up four android handhelds so far, and it is still the most annoying part. A fifth time is still gonna be annoying.
if you would use linux on the thor would that mean you would obly be able to play portmaster games natively?
wonder if any of these frontends will try to make DS version
No shit?! That crazy
now that we have multiple devices
My 8Gen3 phone without active cooling can do modded skyrim pretty well, wouldn't be surprised if the Thor can also
'bout to say fuck it and just use plain launcher and not bother with cover art and shit.
From what I can tell, plain launcher is essentially the Android answer to MinUI.
Linux games with ARM ports do exist due to M-series Mac minis and the Raspberry pi. Not many but still. Also FEX is usable on linux and that'll be greater than winlator if it's compatible
Addition to my prior idea of instead of selling my O2M, dock it under my TV.
Get Syncthing on it, and on the Thor and just have that as a neat seamless idea.
Yeah. I mean a fair amount of tweaking. And you have to turn some graphical settings specifically to low but it's pretty wild
Ever since I've tried playing games on my phones and tablets on the big screen I've been very skeptical of video out on android devices because of the extreme latency I've been experiencing.
I guess the biggest unknowns here for me are hunge, which hopefully Retroid helped them with, and cooling. Just so hard to say how exactly it'll perform with way less space for cooling then like the portal
I can't imagine the cooling being worse than the Odin 2 Mini. The bottom seems to be a similar thickness.
And while it can get warm while I'm playing, say, Mario Galaxy at 3x resolution with texture pacts, it's not hot.
Switch though, it can get pretty toasty.
Yeah. I mean it's not a deal breaker for most of what I'd play but
The heat of the O2 Mini was the one thing putting me off of getting it (one week before the Thor was announced).
Could be the same thing on the Thor, though. 😬
Yeah. Hard to say. The 865 would be cooler if you can get away with it
Just down clock the 8gen2 instead lol
How hot it gets depends a lot on where the chip is positioned and what the case material is. Probably only something well know know once reviewers get it. Also using the silicon case or grips would help from a comfort perspective at least
Haha. True
Would it be cooler playing the same higher power games? I imagine the 865 would have to work much harder, and thus get hotter, to play PS2 than the 8G2 would.
If my understanding on how the chips work is correct.
Something Russ pointed out in the Pocket Ace vid was that if the back shell was thicker or a different material, the heat issue wouldn't be as major of a issue
I’d love to do a comparison between g3xgen2 va 8gen2 in Eden. Since g3xgen2 has better gpu, and Eden looks more gpu heavy than cpu
That's what i do, o2m works great for that
As the Pocket Ace's back shell is thicker, so the heat isn't as much of an issue
Now I just need to stop being lazy and get a dock lol.
Syncthing'd all my systems, play pc game with artemis
if you have a usb hub it'll work too, i do use that odin 2 superdock thing tho
Oh let’s just slap on a foil sticker on the back. Heat transfer solved
Nope, don't have anything like that.
Ah gotcha
I did kinda want the Retroid dock, but eh.
They're a lot more affordable if you're looking for a quick not shipped from china solution
The hub way, i mean
Yeah I get ya
I'd just like my O2M to not be laying flat while playing stuff. Seems like a good way to overheat.
That is actually a really good point i hadn't thought about lol
it gets pretty toasty if i play a lot of switch with it docked
Thinking of getting the skull and co dock since that's at least on Amazon, so I don't have to pay like $20 for shipping like with Retroid or Ayn docks.
Wish people here would just sell their docks. The few that have, only want to sell them with their device lol.
When will someone design a handheld wherein the processor is attached to the back plate? So there can be optional attachment coolers lol
GPD Win 5?
/s
Oh does it have?
Removable battery and Strix Halo APU, up to 128GB of RAM.
Its more workstaiton than handheld
No, "/s" generally means "sarcasm" in the circles I run in.
I’m not touching x86 until rdna4 is available
Honestly the GPD Win 4 (2025) is about exactly what I'd want. It's why the GPD Win 5 was such a sheer disappointment to me.
Granted, it's still way overkill for what I'd use it for. Almost entirely indies lol.
Now if only it didn't cost over a thousand dollars lol.
Win 4 without grips was unusable. I sold mine and got a Win Mini which is better to use without grips than the Win 4 was
GPD devices will never be justified. They are incredibly overpriced. Unfortunately they represent a niche that has not been filled with competitors.
I'm someone that doesn't use grips, and never really have an issue. Can use my 28XX for hours just fine, and have used my Switch 1 and Switch 2 with normal flat joycons for hours just fine.
I have yet to find a handheld that's tested my mildly useless super power
Yeah for some reason I'm immune to hand cramping and I barely even notice the lack of grips on a device. I feel pretty priveledged in this aspect.
Same
Hilariously, having ergo bumps and the like actually annoys me at times
Like "you could've been a smaller profile handheld without that ass mister"
I'm always a fan of slim w/ aftermarket
And there will be a shitload of options for this
Like the RP5 ergos did not feel good for me so the effort is wasted. The only ergos I've enjoyed have been bigger ones (RG cube, steam deck, other x86 devices)
I've two of them and sold two of them. They're making what I want, but what I want isnt possible in x86 yet. The devices are slightly too big, too dense, and too hot. Not enough battery, etc. Also any useful implementations of a dual screen on an x86 device will be mostly useless to me as I'm not going to run windows to use and will have to do something jank like runna full screen keyboard app
I had a couple gpd. Picked up the onexplayer G1 and I love it in comparison. Lighter, comfier in hand, decent cooling if you buy one now, heh
I'd either wait for nvidia to sell windows or linux arm pcs, or the rumors that zen6 can do sub 1 watt. But idk, that rumor is hard to believe
So far the Steamdeck Oled seems to be the only x86 device worth getting. Reasonable price, good battery life, great screen quality.
Honestly might not even be lighter. But the balance is just right
If it's targeting 7GHz+ on desktop that may not be unbelievable
Yeah. I always recommend it as a first device. After that go wild. But you should experience the most polished first
Hmm interesting. I did have a win max 2 which was also alright but I decided it was too big. I guess it you slot into 7+ inches you can get a lot
Honestly, for my usecase, a Loki with the 6600U is probably the best x86 handheld.
Shame it doesn't exist anymore
had a regular steamdeck before, the only 2 things I was dissapointed by were the screen and the battery life (even though it's a lot better than most x86 handhelds), so the steamdeck oled basically fixes that
Yeah. The 8.8 Lenovo panel is nice and it's about 120g lighter then the win max 2. I had one too
I liked it so much I bought one without battery and then cried when the one shop doing replacements had to cancel my order cause they stopped making it 😭
I just play indies, and I guess "indies" like Ori and the Blind Forest.
The only other thing, is the possibilities of arm to x86 emulation are massive with the new snapdragon 8 elite. I've tested game hub myself and seeing resident evil 3 remake hit 70fps in the subway is fucking insane. It tanked when stuff was happening, but still. Leaves room for a ton of games. Has people working on x86 -> arm stuff and my thought, is when all the android 16 stuff is in place and you can run linux containers on most phones, valve will be able to put out a steam apk that just plays your games on android phone
Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk
Steam Deck is also great for that, but god that thing is so big. I love it, it's amazing. But so friggin' huge.
Haha. Pretty sure I played slay the Spire on it more than anything else
That first year of owning the Steam Deck was great. I played more Steam games in that single year than I did the ten years prior combined.
Most of my PC gaming involves a keyboard. Which is why I got the G1 and mostly don't use my deck right now
Yeah. It was pretty revolutionary
Showed the x86 handheld experience didn't have to suck or be overly compromised
I just like being able to use a desktop period and having a keyboard and touch pad improves that a lot. Also with the gpd win mini, you have keyboard shortcuts in reach depending on the game
I don't see valve making a full steam client on android due to the store fees they avoid by not having the game installable, something that could 100% change in the future with recent court cases. What I do see (and there's evidence of) is an ARM linux steam client
And the gpd layout just improves on that in almost every way
The Win Max 2 honestly convinced me that I'd buy like a 13 in laptop with controllers on the side
The full size keyboard is an awkward layout tho. So that took some adjustment
It just works
They only have to do this if they put the apk on the playstore. But its valve. They can just put an ad and a link on the front page of steam and people will download instantly
They are literally in the perfect position for it
This was the other reason I sold the max. I wanted to hold it and type with thumbs but couldnt
I guess if I had to build a dream handheld PC, it'd be a GPD Win 4, but slightly smaller, or at least slightly less thick. And not needing the Latest and Most Expensive SoC
Yeah. Well that works with the G1. It's more the actual key layout
Only let down I see is FEX being incompatible with android and that's the translation wrapper from x86->ARM valve seems to be working with
Like the quotes are on the bottom row and whatnot
I'm just investing in winlator and unofficial android/arm ports at the moment. The odin 2 has been great. Though the fiddling leaves some to be desired
Hmm that would be downer. And might mean they are just looking to release a linux arm handheld
Which I would still take honestly
Their next VR headset is rumoured to have a SD 8 Gen3
Thing that kinda bothers me, kde plasma mobile is right there as a perfectly good android desktop for a phone or tablet. It would work well on a 5-7 inch arm Linux device
I'm having a youtuber thumbnail moment
"guys could valves new headset actually be the goat??!??!?!"
Cause now Im sitting here like, can I get the apple vision pro experience at home
Shit. I'm glad I know this now. I was half looking at big screen beyond but this would be the shit
Honestly I don't really care about VR headset specs personally, as long as it can run virtual desktop and I'm golden haha.
Source for all my rumors of valve stuff is from SadlyItsBradley tweets if you want to dig through them
VR/AR is fun at first. Then I run out of stuff to do and get bored and resell
I really like the ideas the apple vision pro presented. That your pc could exist as like an ethereal experience around you. Tbh I was sold on the concept by heavy rain. But the vision pro is extra in a lot of ways and proprietary apple os is a no for me. I can see the experience taking off much easier if it open source
I would say this but half life alyx was the most fun I've had with a game in years and will do anything to make that experience more common
I'm still disappointed that Valve was promising like an engine kit based on half life alyx assets or something and it just never materialized. Like all that work could have make it easier to make a new gen of vr games
Same. I would have to make room at the moment
HL Alyx has a great modding community though, plenty of maps to keep the VR nerds entertained
I'd have to finally clean my basement. Lol . Just mountains of handheld packaging, 3d printers and a server rack right now
The first 9 months I bought a vr headset It was just rotting away, till I got really into vrchat and even bought an extra headset for facetracking, like imo vr gaming isn't really better than flat screen gaming, sure it's a different experience but not better. But I truly believe vr social games/platforms/ mmos outshine their flat screen versions. Being able to actually use body language , and if you are deep in full body tracking and face tracking is such a big difference from just being a static avatar.
This is true and I should use it more
Looks like we're not so different you and I
Check out https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2443128935 if you want some suggestion
I really need a trip to the card board recycling bin
Would take care of most of my problems
I will take
Haha. Probably not.
Did everyone get the Thor they wanted??
Not yet, shipping says it'll take another 10 weeks
Did everyone order the Thor they wanted?
The removal of last question mark changed everything
Has anyone found out what the 'Odin Mode' in the TCC is about?
TCC?
I like the control center
I'd rather just have it off when not in use tbh
I do think that's a strength of the black unit. When off it'll look mostly just like a black single screen device.
Abxy layout? Aka xbox vs nintendo
And iirc device uses nintendo layout
Yeah, Odin mode iirc is just buttons act like Nintendo buttons. Without saying "nintendo"
Maybe they will have button that brings it up easy. Like ayaneo hasb
So east is confirm and south is cancel in menus with Odin mode, and the other way around for whatever the Xbox mode is called.
Ah it is called Xbox
Just double checked on my O2M
Ah ty
I like Ayaneo's control software honestly
Hope Ayns does a decent job
I honestly never tried it on my portal, mini or O2 lol
Do we have official device pics of the other colors yet? I saw the black ones
Ok, well good thing Ayn has separate controls for each screen’s brightness.
Now as long as they also have more deeper settings to independently control stuff like contrast and saturation for each, there should be no surprises like “people realizing that 2 different oled panels can also be very different in looks, and then being unable to fix it themselves”.
Sorry, AYN didn’t say anything
tbh the differences between the RP5 panel and the RP Mini panel are very minimal if they are present at all
I’m just being hopeful
This isn’t the RP5 panel.
This is very notably a new 6” screen that is 120hz.
that's fair, but nonetheless I don't think the difference will be very dramatic
anyway, if the difference is dramatic, Russ will complain and AYN will do Russ's biding to fix it so all good
Was talking in the Ayn discord, and am now worried about the white unit yellowing lol.
Might change my order to rainbow later.
thats gonna burn in the oled real nice lmao
Fair, in all likeliness the reason the O2 Mini never got a Local Dimming toggle could just be because no one high profile enough was complaining about it.
might change to rainbow too. i dont have any fun colored retro handhelds
closest i have is the pocket air
us peasants are at the mercy of whatever high profile reviewers like/don't like
tbf, the rainbow's only "fun" aspect is the skittles buttons.
unless we organize to make a lot of noise collectively
I have no idea what that is?
Has anyone here had OLED burn in on a handheld (excluding the OLED Vita)
i wouldnt think anyone has treated their oled screen as a sensor panel
No, but some UI's in apps or games stress it similarly if left on
This.
I've always heard of spooky stories of OLED burn-in, never really see much outside of very niche, specific uses of OLED panels.
Not including the old stuff like the Vita screen.
Just don't leave on the same screen for longer than a hour and it should be fine.
android generally get turned of when not used for some time i think.
All that can be change in the settings also
Wulff den got burn in on switch oled after leaving it on static elements for 3.6k hrs
i mean ye, you could, i just never really changed it cause there wasnt like a situation where that was necessary
A static test that'd be different if the device was being actively used for different things
Basically, Local Dimming is the main way MiniLED can achieve an “OLED like black”, except it fucking sucks and applies that to literally all darker colors and to even bright colors surrounded by mostly dark colors, resulting in the example above where the text is barely bright when the keyboard isn’t anywhere close to them.
Then it's not a static test.
I meant the outcome would be different in a real life use case, not the test itself
I'm uneducated, but isn't OLED burn-in mostly caused by static images being left on the screen for too long?
Yes.
Essentially as individual OLEDs get used their lifespan diminishes and they get darker
If static was 3.6k hrs, I’d imagine a real-life scenario would be prolonged much past that amount of time usage. I wouldn’t worry about it
So basically the desired result would be turning off Local Dimming? I could see that being nice.
i don't think i have heard many burn in stories with modern oleds
They always degrade but with static images they burn out more noticeably, forming dark bars/elements
I think I'll treat it the same I do with batteries. These things are meant to be used, not babied. I won't worry about it personally.
As you can guess from the fact that even the white text was made barely visible from it, dark colors become outright no different from black in of themselves, where you’d need to forcibly increase the brightness to even see the color properly (and since it’s an already bright screen technology, this leads to mostly bright colors becoming outright blinding). I know in my very unlucky case, I seem to be among the few that outright can barely see dark colors properly without anything less than 80% brightness or more, where bright colors become the relatively same experience for me as staring directly at the sun.
If you are taking care of your handheld by the time burn in or degrade screen kicks in there will be something better
i think potentinally if you play alot of games with black borders, the colors where the borders are might be more brighter since they get used less. but really with those kinds of screen by the time they broken and battered you have your money worths out of the handheld.
yeah the thor only gotta last for 2 months
lol
Yes, that should have already been an option from the start, since it’s an option in all MiniLED screen devices, even the freaking Pimax Portal (another Android device, so no it’s not Android just lacking the option), directly because of the fact that it really sucks for some things.
It’s been around a year and they still haven’t even updated the Mini for anything, much less to add that toggle.
And yeah the Odin 2 Mini screen can get insanely bright. I keep it at ~25% in most lighting conditions.
Yup, meanwhile I couldn’t even see the grass in the intro to Pokemon Emerald, nor the cave in FF6 Advance without color restoration (don’t get me started on regular FF6, that shit might as well be the void with some weirdly imprecise lines for walls), without going up to like 60%.
my flip2 doesnt have crack cause other new shiny came along
flip without the flip
fliped (past tense)
The Odin 2 Mini is unironically the only handheld I’ve ever sold for a singular flaw (even in spite of loving everything else about it), simply because that one flaw made it borderline painful for me to play games on.
It’s also why I nowadays adore the Pocket Ace for effectively being an IPS Odin 2 Mini in utility (small and portable, high power, doesn’t genuinely hurt to look at).
Do we know if AYN is going to have accessories buttons for the Thor?
i want red buttons
or dmg buttons i mean
I want rainbow buttons on trans purple
nah but stubbs mentioned on stream, asking them to offer rainbow buttons as an diy option
they might just do that if enough people request it
They should
or you have to email and buy enough of those $1 shpping marks, to recreate the value of the buttons you want to get
i like red/dmg buttons
Can they also offer diy replacements for the sticks? I’ve been using my Flip 2’s sticks in my Ace and unironically loving them, so being able to use them (since the Thor’s sticks look unironically the exact same) in other handhelds even after I end up selling it would be great.
your best bet is to get dweeb, telling ayn they should do this ;))
lets hope ayn doesnt start a retro power tier......
Technically they’re the outright inspiration for that.
it's something they might just do if you email them and buy like 10 of these
Yeah
I mean without a pro order. You get black
but you never have to get the max
I know Sakura Mods over on Etsy does some custom buttons for different systems, maybe they will?
getting the pro is fine because of how cheap they're offering their base models
Yup, and like I stated, Ayn was doing that so long before AYANEO started that they unironically could have been the exact inspiration for it.
300 for 8 gen2 and 2 oled screens is ridiculos value
Sakura depend on if they get the handheld.
gotta make some money by upselling people to the pro models
I don't like for any company to do. Just bad
value of the year, quote me on that
personally, I'd like ayn to get rid of their base models so they can offer their pro models cheaper
I mean, if you want something as basic as rainbow buttons on the clear purple, again probably just message Ayn customer support.
Would probably be cheaper than Sakura Retro Modding's buttons. That and they seem to only really make PSX buttons for stuff like the Odins and Retroids.
Add in shipping and fees it closer to 340
128/8 on a 8 gen 2 isnt that great anyways
shipping and accessories, never got charged fees with 4px
ooooh whos putting this in winlator

FEATURES…
you'd pay 500 to ayaneo for the same stuff
Why not lol been having no issues with the base o2 portal
You mean $400 for same spec.
Does the Vita version of lumines emulate well?
nahh 500 with shipping and fees
unless you ask for dpd
but i dont trust dpd
I just saying. Saying this company does it also doesn't. make ok for another company to do it.
glad to hear it, happy for you
can't wait to lowball people for their thors in #💬│marketplace-chat
i play the switch one
Nope, was only $485 at most for the 12G/256G, the 8G/128G being only like $430.
paid $560.98 for the 16/512 ayaneo pocket ds but that's because i paid 3% in foreign transaction fees
they don't accept amex
87% of the reason I went ayaneo is because the dpad uses microswitches, so hard to go back to membrane
even dome feels meh
google is getting rid of sideloading by 2027?
hopefully ayaneo's sheet on microswitch implementation is good
Ain't no way
It's just going to be another 'This app isn't signed, are you sure?' type pop-up
Thor will be on Thor 2 by then
everyone loves the tsa
Uh can we make Linux phones i guess?
Could have just linked the article instead of a screenshot of some talking head
If a thor 2 is coming out in the next 16 months I would probably only ask for the mortgage screen to be on the bottom with 120hz (to bypass the stupid if both screens are on both can only be 60hz issue), other than that maybe a reduced thickness could be great and that's it, I don't think there is much else you can really do at that point.
i don't have a need for sideloading apps on my main phone thankfully, this will just affect gaming devices
Seems like a step the EU will clamp down on as they did with apple
If you have a non-Google build of Android on your phone, none of this applies.
Like Samsung :p
Custom ROMs may become popular again
Just go to Linux
Is the Thor not using the same micro switches they’ve always used for the D-Pad?
it should be dome, not microswitches
Like, I do also prefer the Tactile buttons on the face buttons like the AYANEO has, but…oh, got it.
calm down satan
||just wanted to use that phrase lol||
Why exactly is this cheaper than the Odin 2 mini? Isn't this basically everything in that but bigger actually and with a second screen?
I assume the Odin 2 mini is a little overpriced cause it didn't really sell all that well.
I think they overpaid for the miniled panel
maybe snapdragon 8 gen 2 chips got cheaper because it's been a year
that screen fucking sucks
you wouldn't be saying that if it had the rp5 screen
so how many irresponsible ppl are here? 😛
i was so close to getting the odin 2 mini but that vignetting looks so bad
i dont know why they didnt go for an oled or just regular ips lcd
I stopped using my RP5 cause I liked the O2Mini screen more
wow, that's weird
Almost like people are different
Something about the bloom and the vignetting was so appealing to me
there was a post with irl images
We got one very professional photo set
I don't feel strongly enough screens to care myself.
I got the RP4 Pro instead of the RP5 because I hated the glass front, then decided I missed the power from my Odin 2 and traded the later for the Odin 2 Mini. Then sold the RP4 Pro.
It's kind of like how I will play games on native integer scaling on 3DS, even on a 14 inch panel
it really depends on how azhar handles the scaling for
I noticed the TPU cover has a proper hole, but the TPU grip case doesnt seem to have a hole for the fan
if it's sharp enough, i'll just use linear
You mean this?
I do think that lip is gonna be a nice dead skin trap lol.
That's what I said
The grip seems to have a cutout that wouldn't reach that circle
i thought i would hate glass fronts then i got a black portal and realized i dont care. yeah i wipe the smudging off once and awhile but i dont think about it much
You said the grip doesnt have a hole for the fan? Im confused lol. It won't cover the vents
That's what he said?
Do you see how the cutout here and the circle cutout on the tpu sleeve is not the same?
Yes. What about it?
Yes
Then why TF does the grip not have it
The circle and half circle line up to where the fan is
The grip doesnt go all the way up then?
yeah
No
Ah I see
intreresting choice tbh
Ye i would've rather them done a full grip all the way around
Probably makes it easier to put on and take off as needed
I suppose that makes sense
yeah as long as it stays on im ok with the half grip. the portal grip i fear over time i'll stretch it out
Your hand placement will be lower due to the grip so it should be comfortable enough going up as much as it does I would imagine
Wife and I earned just about the amount it would cost to buy a 12/256 model. About the only thing keeping me from pre-ordering rn 😓 feels bad to think our side gig bought us a handheld
Or away from the device. Probably not making sense lol
Delayed-gratification-and-chill
What’s the site that shows how well each game runs depending on SOC?
Does the top part of the tpu shell fits with the tpu grip and into the case(grip version) ?
you can see how it looks with thew grip here
im wondering if the 180 degree can hold, unlike the flip2
Mine won't ever be doing 180. No reason to put that strain on a hinge probably prone to fail 😅
Yeah, even with the Nintendo DS/3DS line, I never used the 180 angle.
same lol
I always just used the middle lock-in spot. Whatever angle that one was.
it just has to last 2 months.....
Odin 3 DS
Get out
While the smudges are a moderately big deal, for me the glossy feel is the bigger deal. It's part of why I dislike the New 3DS XL, and that it's only non-glossy finish shell was the SNES/SFC one.
Note I mean that the outter shells/plates were glossy, not the innards.
The Sun and Moon one or the Pikachu? The former's outer shells seem to look pretty glossy to me. The latter I didn't know existed, so fair enough on that one.
Yep I mean the outer shell as well. Pikachu ye
I was quite sad when I bought a third party outer shell that was the SNES one and it did not fit on my New 3DS XL for some reason.
It just would not click into place.
Very unfortunate
Grip is mandatory if you want to play D Pad centric games
I feel like I would almost get this for the Thor. But one I'd be too worried about any thickness stopping it from closing, if the screen protector warning is anything to go by. And two I already have a hard enough time getting screen protectors on right, let alone something like this lol.
If they were smart they'd just leave cutouts for the points of contact
Also I'd hope that they'd go for different color options than Retroid, also also not have the gaudy company name everywhere.
Does the Thor have M1/M2 buttons?
Nope, which is frustrating.
Love that on the odin 1/2 and Retroid OG flip
I remember complaining about how AyaNeo seems to be the only high tier doing the extra buttons consistently.
Retroid's given up on it entirely, and Ayn seems to do it only on the bigger handhelds like the Odin 2 or 2 Portal.
Like damn, maybe I'd like a button to use for fast forward, or save state management or whatever.
Thankfully most of the consoles I play on my O2M either don't have a hot key for fastforward, Dolphin, or don't use all the buttons, PPSSPP.
Though with NetherSX2 and DuckStation I just kinda have to bind it in a semi case by case way with whatever button the game doesn't use.
Extra mappable buttons would be so good...
Maybe that's the real secret reason why AyaNeo devices are so expensive.
Yes extra 2 buttons for hotkeys would be good. One for fast forward and one for rewind
Would be cool if there was a way to have the lower 2nd screen as 4 hotkey buttons
where would they put them lol
Touchscreen
Yeah, for the not DS/3DS games, having a little hot key menu on the bottom screen could be useful.
I have no idea how it'd work though.
that's not even controversial that's just objectively wrong lol
I'd argue your response adds to "controversial" lol.
4:3 leaves a bit of extra space due to the aspect ratio
you put the 4:3 content all the way to the top and then have a little chin left at the bottom to stick some hotkeys on
I don't understand all the complaining about glass fronts and reinforced hinges. I have many handhelds including a DS Lite for 7 years that never broke, never scratched and never had hinge issues. Y'all must be rough with these things.
I don't really see how glass front and hinges are related?
One is simply a preference, and the other is a worry about durability.
sir, these handhelds are not made by Nintendo
Check out some of the recent posts on retroids subreddit
Just things that people say need changed cause too fragile.
I've not seen a single complaint about the glass front due to fragility. It's almost always been about not wanting the smudges/finger prints.
Which, with any glossy finish, is a valid complaint imo.
Oh, well. I guess that is fair. I just never had a problem with it.
But just a preference all the same.
It's also just kind of weird for the bottom of a clamshell, like i remember joking that retroid would use one on the Flip 2, I didn't expect Ayn to actually do it
Hinges, well, it's a big point of failure with almost all the hinged retro emulation handhelds.
