#AYN Thor

Because it will be fun to mess around with
It def opens up all new ways to play which is cool
Using an SD card as internal has always caused me massive headaches
Well the one time I made that mistake, never again
Yeah. It has some slim bonuses. But some headaches afterwards
Yeah, SD card as internal storage will only cause issues. Best to avoid it if you can.
I think I'm going with 12/256, SNES white colorway
Minimally visible finger prints, most retro look
Shit. Actually thats the reason I joined this server. Or rather the ayaneo ds pc got me looking at handhelds before I went with the gpd win mini cause I knew the second second screen would be a hassle in linux but I love clamshell devices. I just got odin 2 portal, I've used a decent amount. I like it but pulled out my psvita recently and started mess with it and like the size but wonder if it would be slightly too small. Also with the odin 2 multitasking is difficult cause apps pretty much close when theyre in background even if you just want to check something real quick or send a message. 6 inches, the ideal in-between, smaller than even a 3dsxl so mostly pocketable. And now I'll be able to just close it and plug it in to output to tv
Retro/modern🗿
I joined when Flip DS was on indiegogo
What color are people getting
Probably plain old Black if I do decide, personally color really doesn't factor into it much
Plus it looks slick in Black
If the hinge get crack lines, black should be less noticeable I guess? 👀
Clear Purple for me more than likely.
Will need to see what it looks like in footage. It's between it and Rainbow for me
it looks slick as hell in black. I kinda like atomic purple though. Maybe if they different transparent colors
The clear vs solid argument, in terms of build quality, doesn't make any sense. For retroid, solid colors seemed to crack the most. For Anbernic, clear colors cracked the most.
I will gripe that the usb port is on the bottom front and not the back but with the battery it'll probably get I'll live
I'm leaning towards black for OLED immersion
is this an issue with the odin 2s?
Issue with Retroid Pocket Flip 2 and RG35XXSP
Well this aint that
The odin 2 old as hell. If theres a bunch of issues with their clear model we'd know by now
But why are we comparing a non hinge device
this is what im thinking, but think the clear purple with the glass front is going to look so good. one of those 2...
well you said both brands had opposite issues. Seems the plastic would go by brand
but I'm thinking this is the way
AYN and Retroid are essentially the same company
yeah but eh
toyota and lexus are also the "same company". The people running the brand can choose what they want I think
I doubt even within the same company they use the same plastic and/or manufacturer for all their products
I think even if its literally the same manufacturer, that the facility they use is more than capable of making a variety. If the point is that Ayn is the premium brand to retroid, then can just choose all the better materials to maintain that image and reputation. Or at least, why else have two brands? Cause then it will lead to the same confusion that $200 retroid and a $500 retroid are the same
It's an awesome piece of hardware assuming no issues. Def what I've been waiting for
I'm growing more and more impatient all the sudden
Sweet lord. Dude was like, let's pick the worst color combos for each console to compare it to a white block on white
And let's side light it just for giggles
The alignment also looks bad. It's only one cm wider than the flip 2. That looks bigger
Why are people saying it's not pocketable?
Isn't RP5 wider? I fit that in my back pocket all the time. With a printed cover bit on it.
It's wider by a lot
i dunno what your pockets look like but that's not goin in mine
I've pocketed my rg556 when I still used that
Eh. Some people are just bigger or wear baggier clothes than others. Nothing really fucked about it. Heh
I'm 6'5" & wear normal jeans 🤷♂️
I could fit the flip 2 in the front pocket of my work jeans/khakis
I never wear jeans
Khakis or if I'm going out that's not a restaurant, sweat pants
But yeah. Any loose cut is probably fine
It's also probably more fit then height related. I wear pretty loose cut pants
Not pants but sometimes I pocket my steam deck in my hoodie
I'm 5' and wear regular jeans from Target. Guess it depends.
When I do wear cargo shorts I throw it in my cargo pockets 😆
Like I wouldn't run a marathon. But if I need to switch floors or get mail it does good enough
Toyota and Lexus, Honda and Acura, most of them are even closer than what AYN and Retroid has going. Like, literally parts from an Accord fit perfectly into an ILX but they'll tell you at the dealer it no-worky-worky
It's hard to say. Like clearly aesthetics wise the share a design team and some of the hardware
Yea I think I’m definitely going for the 865 model
I’m kinda disappointed that I can’t get any color other than black for the base models, despite $50 more for 8g2 is a pretty good deal
Feel like Ayn tends to be pretty limited usually in colorways
Actually shocked there's 4. Feel like that's more of a Retroid thing
I expected white black and a single retro
At least at launch
I am new to AYN devices so I wouldn’t know
If I'm committing to the Thor, should I join the AYN discord?
Why?
Customer service throughline and insights, ig
You could join just because and check it out. Not sure why you need validation from anyone here
Thinking out loud mostly, lol. I went and did it anyway.
If they wanted to be really retro they should have copied the blue ds og
"Four? Since when were there four? It's always three. Three blind mice, three musketeers..."
I'm very happy they went with what they did. Much closer to the New Nintendo 3DS models look
Just wish they were matte finish:/
depends on if they add any more colorways
of the four they have now it's black no question, the other ones are boring asf
I don't think ayn normally does that so I'm not going to wait
I’m calling it… someone is going to 3D print a flat back shell, thin trigger mod. Or at least look into it. (We had similar mods for other devices in the past)
Probably still gonna get black
I don’t hate the black colorway but it’s definitely not my favorite
I got my mini in black and I quickly realized I enjoy having color on my handhelds
I would be a customer. I'm 100% ok with inline shoulder buttons if it means more pocketable. I don't even mind it at all. Don't play racing outside of Mario kat so don't care about analog either
I agree! Give us flatness
I can not deal with inline shoulders at all 😂
does anyone know how long the early bird period lasts for? im not too torn up over $10 but
good to know when that new price goes into effect
Should be for a couple of months
neat :)
and review models are def going to come out after the early bird period, aren't they?
For Retroid flip 2, the early bird discount lasted until all preorders are fulfilled, which is at least a few days after reviews came out. Not sure if Ayn does similarly.
Reviews will come out end of September and shipment starts in October and Nicole from Ayn has said the discount lasts until stock arrives so I assume that’s similar to Retroid
Russ needs this pants
I used to have these. They are JNCO Crime Scenes
ayn thor looks so good
but i gotta pray that i get enough money for this
i made some pros and cons for this device
PROS
-Clamshell, (Screen Protection when closed)
-OLED (Amazing Color)
-120hz (VERY SMOOTH)
-Double Screens (Multitasking, 3ds, DS games etc)
-Insane Power (8 gen 2 enough to handle switch games and winlator)
-6000mah battery
-High Performance Mode
-Has a cheaper alternative
-6'' Top screen
CONS
-Battery drain might be an issue
-Hinge? (If the issues might still be there)
Overall Rating (From impressions)
8/10 (9.4 if the hinge is fixed)
bit too soon for pros and cons but a decent summary 🙂 battery life should still be fairly solid tbh
Based on what the Flip 2 hinge mechanism was and why the cracks happened on non-Ice Blue, using better/stronger plastic on the Thor would help
It’s using the same mechanism based off the teaser video we were given
6,000 mAh with 2 OLED, Nah Battery life will be fine
Hinge is Valid tho
Hi guys, i have NS2, PS5 and Steam deck Oled. I only need a device for the emulation of GBA, DS NDS and i love dual screen. Do you think that THOR with S865 is good enough? or maybe it's better Snap 8 gen 2 with 8 ram 128 gb ?
The 865 is plenty for DS and 3DS if that's what youre looking for
The 865 version is far more than enough for your needs
The 8 gen 2 is massively overkill powerwise, but that power does offer the ability for HD textures for 3ds games and such. Its mainly a $50 different, but i think 865 is good enough
Also think 8gen2 is a better purchase if you plan to keep the Thor for a long time
nah battery might be cooked bro
hinge might be good though
thats why i have a ''?'' at the end
6,000 mAh and 2 OLED screen for Battery Saving isn't enough?
And how is the Hinge not questionable since AYN & Retroid ate basically the same company???
Just wait 3 months to see how it last
And its more on the quality of the plastic too
Ayn has been pretty good on that from what I've seen
But yea the battery we gotta see how much 2 screens will drain
Personally waiting on the o3 before I decide
yupp
Considering they've probably been watching Retroid and the issues with the flip 2, they're probably figured out the hinge/plastic issue by now
Yeah they've probably been "watching" Retroid and not experiencing everything themselves
I mean, it's not like Retroid themselves haven't been watching their own Flip 1 hinges.
Im probably gonna wait to see how it pans out, then try and sell or trade my Odin 2 Mini for a Thor if it pans out good
that is the hope anyway
Because I don't know where else to ask, does Winlator have better performance with Snapdragon Gen 2 or Gen 3? I ask because the only reason I have to get the Max version of this would be the extra Winlator performance, however, if it's better to have a Gen 3 Snapdragon for Winlator anyway, I might as well just get the mid version of the Thor, and look for another future device to fulfill my Winlator needs.
Winlator relies more on your RAM than the CPU from what i understand. Sure you might get some better performance on the gen 3, but if you don't have enough ram, then it's pretty much rendered moot
Very good information to have, thank you. So the max is still on the table for me. Now let's wait and see how the hinge and the battery worries go.
No problem!
that's not really true
yes you do need RAM, a lot of RAM when running heavy duty stuff
but you do need CPU as well, it's not any less CPU intensive because of that
Winlator is one of the last few things on Android that still benefits linearly from better CPU power
I didn't mean for it to come off that way lol. Yes the CPU is very important for this, but tbh, I wait for something with the Elite chips as between the gen 2 and 3, the 3 will definitely give a performance boost, but not enough imho for the upgrade atm compared to the Elite chips or the G series
The weird thing is, they tested Flip 2 for like, 50 or 100,000 cycles. They are very confused themselves.
To be fair, plastic is a pretty diverse material. Depending on what kind of plastic environmental factors can also play a huge role, humidity, temperature, etc.
I feel like in certain parts of the US a metal handheld would literally rust if left out 😆
Very possible their "lab" conditions were pretty consistent and sterile
Even small things like the hinge being made of metal and it expanding and contracting on a micro scale with temperature fluctuations
Bigger companies do a lot of this stuff and set tolerance standards around them. Not sure these go beyond just bending it a lot
What are the best variant in term of hinge damage?
Mechanical stuff is always more challenging
Yeah. Just look at rubber in Russ's house. I remember him complaining that it would fall apart over time; however I've been using an MX Master for 4 years in Nebraska. No issues.
You want it to be as flexible as possible. ABS, PETG, ASA are all popular 3D printing plastics for mechanical parts because they bend more and are less brittle. Each also reacts differently to temps and moisture. ABS is probably one of the most common for devices. This might even be that. But I doubt they just run the full gambit of testing
Probably look at laptops for the best example of longer lasting hinges. Mostly metal. Mostly enclosed in metal. Or hidden within the device frame itself
Is there a community spreadsheet that shows what Switch games can currently be emulated?
Almost no laptop does exposed hinge design crap because it would just never survive, especially wrapped in plastic
They should do an industrial design with lubed ball bearings and steel gears for setting the screen angle
How is tariffs going to affect final cost in the US?
Currently it won't
Honestly best case scenario would be all plastic base. All plastic lid, anodized aluminum hinge connected to both. Best best case is internal metal frames the hinge connects to both in the top and bottom. Obviously all of this increases price but would mean everything lasted longer
Like that point of rotation. Make that all metal
Obviously that adds to price tho
The way toys get around it is by using a more flexible plastic and just having really loose tolerances. Which wouldn't be as enjoyable on an electronic
Is that GPD Pocket
OneXPlayer G1
GPD is similar tho. Just comes with a smaller neck for the display in the middle I think
They do the whole rotating screen thing
But yeah. Companies do weird shit, like make the top shell metal. And then the hinge is still wrapped in plastic (pocket DS)
Would much prefer plastic lid and metal wrapped hinge
Is there just as much support for both of these chips when it comes to Linux, alternative os, cfw, custom drivers and etc? Are there things the 865 can functionally do that the 8gen2 cannot? Have we effectively reached parity on the community support between these 2 chips?
Cost aside, are there ways that the sd865 could be more compatible with a given use case than the sd8g2?
Do these packages include support for the WiFi radio/bluetooth? could you expect better WiFi compatibility and potentially better performance from the newer 8gen2? Is that how it works?
IIRC both just have Rocknix and that's it
Well I mean, Rocknix supports both chips
Also tbh I don't think a lot of people actually used Rocknix on Retroid devices
if you don't use both screens at the same time it should be better than the Odin 2 Mini at least
Yeah, you don't have to use both screens and I won't unless necessary. Still going to be better than using the dual screen thing with the rp5 lol. That thing is a battery killer, based on what I saw in Russ's video
I love the idea of paying $250 for this device, but I want purple and believe my use cases, with the 2nd screen, necessitate more than 8gb which puts me at the 349, 8g2 regardless. Then Claude pointed out that:
Snapdragon determines:
Maximum capabilities - Each Snapdragon model has integrated modems and RF components that set the theoretical limits for WiFi standards (like WiFi 6E, WiFi 7), Bluetooth versions, and cellular bands
Core specifications - Things like maximum WiFi speeds, supported frequency bands, and Bluetooth version are largely dictated by the chip
I also would likely throw a 1tb card in this so, that’s +$70 on a good day…
At $419 after the additional 1tb sd card, you might as well get the faster wifi standards, better Bluetooth compatibility, likely a more secure platform with better power management/efficiency, with an extra 4gb as cherry on top? I think I see really good value at that top tier. Really feel like I need to stretch for it.
Oh and theoretically that onboard 1tb should smoke the 1tb sd card right?
The pocket ds is worth the pre-order if you want one, you save a lot. The thor...10 bucks is laughable and no reason to rush out for it. I am happy to wait and see how ayn thor pans out. I don't trust anything coming out of that factory regarding hinges lol
top screen is beefier here than in the o2 mini, it's not a given that battery life will be better even at 60hz
I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up on par with the O2 Mini at 60hz and worse at 120hz
it's OLED and ain't intend on burning your retinas out tho
fair, OLED should in theory be more efficient
so at least at 60hz it should have a better battery life, despite the 1" size increase
they probably didn't test with the final plastic material
from what i understood is what they tested was opning the device up from the middle across those cycles
and not what some poeple do opening the lid from the side
still a scenario that is very likely to happen, not that wouldn't baby my devices, but heck, opening it up "wrong" is kinda not what should do the "hing" in 😅
8 gen 2 is more powerful and I think it has a couple vulkan extensions that 865 doesn't (which allows parallel + parallel for N64 emulation, the most accurate with best options)
I do
Rocknix is a blessing if you don't want to spend so much time configuring things before playing
I’ll just drop this here just in case….
The stability is a bit rough
I think the g3 gen 3 is supposed to have better stability than the g3x gen 2
Ok, then just compare the lowest score. Still 6x better
Well I mean yeah
That’s mainly due to the heat of the chipset itself since it’s an 8 gen 2 that’s tweaked to allow overclocking in stock.
On the Odin 2, it’s able to stay more stable directly because of the fact that it’s got a hard limit on what it can do without rooting.
Your also talking about 6 years difference in release date
Not really a fair comparison
then why live in the past
Who’s living in the past ?
Difference is pricing
DMG roughly cost twice as much
yeah all up to the consumer on what they want to pay for
What was the point of your pic again?

i dont even know myself
nah i was just surprised of the difference in performance
but i guess i shouldnt have been
if anything i felt the 865 was more performant than what that pic shows
All that power and can't even play an FPS with that trash track-pad.
Fair , SD 865 is well optimized and has great drivers
yep. but its not really built for that
Works for a controller, not a handheld where the screen is moving along with your hands.
tell that to nintendo
Yeah would be kind of silly tbh
Nintendo are the ones who figured out ages ago that the best doesn't mean raw power.
I'm gonna wait as well, hinge is not the only thing anybody can screw up in a handheld
Then again how long should one wait to make sure hinges are solid? IIRC Flip 2 took a few months before everyone started to have problems
i dunno. worked well for me (uncharted vita, zelda switch)
Within the first few months should be when any obvious hinge issues start arising.
Anything past that should be covered by warranty ideally
Even better, hinge just ends up being really good still for long enough that there’s very little concern
I have a question: what's the harm in preordering exactly? If the hinges should break or the batteries explode, we would get a replacement or a refund, right?
not guaranteed. especially when dealing with chinese companies. though they genreally are ok ish... its a gamble.
Even with a company like AYN? I mean, they have made some successful devices before.
Wild comment considering the discord is about retro handhelds
yes....whats so hard to understand that you shouldnt preorder if you dont wanna betatest and gamble with your money?
almost happened with retroid and the mini v1 earlier.
always assume that pre-ordering is a gamble.
Just meant why buy something from 6yrs ago when you can buy something new today (factoring out price). Otherwise same thing could be said with all the new devices, why buy them when you can get the og consoles?
Considering the majority of this space focuses on playing games from 10-20 years
You don't need the latest and greatest
Idk I kind of feel like for only $50 more the 8 gen 2 sku is kind of a no brainer
If games from 10-20 years, then sure.
I personally never had an issue with the different devices I pre-ordered (some much more expensive than this), so I was curious how much of a gamble it is with a company like AYN, as everything I've read about them sounded like they were trustworthy in that regard.
A lot you can do with these that isn't limited to PS3 and before tho
They are as trustworthy as any other Chinese handheld maker. Whatever that may mean
Haha. Yeah. I've seen the general complaints for pretty much all of them at some point
Even Ayaneo is delivering faster now
And apparently they’re doing better with customer support than they used to.
Yeah. Sounds good to me
Only the max is worth preordering for the 30 bucks off. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself
Wish we got some pins in here
Considering shipping and potential tariffs, $30 off is probably very helpful, lol
How much do you pay on tariffs when buying Ayn devices normally?
zero, zilch, 4PX avoids tax to Europe 😂
This will be my first AYN.
4px avoids tariffs?
I said to Europe, but hell, it has a better shot to the US than DHL at least
Alr
Yeah just realized that part🫤
Europe has 17-27% on everything coming in (depending on the country)
Luxemburg does 17% vat, Hungary 27% (insane)
I complain already over the 19% Germany does 😂
Yea but that's not tariffs just other tax 😛
while tariffs are designed to influence the cost and flow of imported products and VAT officially is a general consumption tax, in effect they do the same 😛
Am I a crazy person who just wants the Thor as a premium Flip 2? I feel like in reality, the bottom screen will likely be turned off most of the time
Considering people have been asking for dual screen devices in ages, probably yes
I'll probably use it in single screen mode more than anything. Though I'd use the bottom screen for 3:2/4:3/8:7 stuff and top for 16:9
3:2 is probably better for top
I like my GBA on the top screen on the 3ds
Links awakening dx on the bottom and the remake on the top?
Imagine if you could send inputs to both screens at once
That's totally fair. But the bottom screen on the Thor will actually be good!
same screen as the RP Classic
it's really good imo
GBA is fine on the RP classic screen
Wait so the price of a base Ayn Thor would be close to 400 because of tariffs to the us?
in theory, in practice either customs hasn't been enforcing it or these companies have been using workarounds, dhl is the only one i've heard of actually abiding
DHL at least here also slaps theeir own iunsane fees on tom
GBA looks shit past like 3.5”
So if I use 4px I'll only pay the price listed on the website + tax?
in theory, no one really knows what the situation will look like by the time they ship, shit's changing by the day, but up until now at least that's how it's been
Damn alr
#MagicXOne35when
Hell no, I freaking love GBA on the Pocket Ace.
And even before that I liked it on the Flip 2 and RP5.
That is definitely an opinion
I wouldn't use that strong language to describe it but I do think they're are diminishing returns
All personal pref though
The only thing diminishing is my eyesight with old age
RG552 enters the chat
There definitely is a point for GBA where it looks bad when it gets too big, couldn't deal with FFT:A on my steamdeck
If the PPI was better on bigger screen it look great. But these bigger sceens have lower PPI
Many handheld retro game
I don't know much about this snapdragon chip. Can it play switch to a certain level? I am thinking of picking it up to replace my RP5.
The 8g2 offers a lot power over the 865
So, potentially?
Same chip in the Odin 2 family so yeah it does switch about as well as any Android SoC can
Indeed
You can just look up odin 2 gameplay and you can see it for yourself
The 8g2 is a powerhouse flagship soc from a few years ago
What the hell are you guys talking about? GBA literally doesn’t give a shit about PPI on the Steam Deck, it already integer scales perfectly.
Those pixels are already the best they could ever possibly look on it.
Weirdly I find a CRT shader helps a lot for that. Softens everything a bit
The actual problem is that FFTA doesn't look super good when blown up.
Higher PPI = smaller pixels = less blocky image.
It’s not about whether it’s integer scaled or not.
Except those pixels will be blocky regardless because of the integer scaling.
No, what I mean is
Imagine I’m showing you an image made up of 10 pixels. One screen is low PPI the other is high PPI but both screens are the same size
The only possible way you could make it look “less blocky” is if you use something frankly really gross like those “16-bit pixel upscalers” that make them look smoother.
That’s also not true
If it's integer scaled, It will look the same on both device/screen
Integer scaling doesn’t give a shit about ppi.
That’s literally how it works.
Several pixels being used to display a single “in game” pixel.
Non-integer scaling is when ppi becomes more important.
Do we know if the two screens can be toggled off one at a time?
GBA on a 1280x800 screen will look the exact same as it does on a 2560x1600 screen of the exact same size because both can use the full vertical resolution and will still integer scale properly.
You’re disregarding the physical size of the pixels. As in, yes I agree that 1 in game pixel will be made up of 2x2 or 4x4 or whatever
Both screens are OLED so telling one screen to display a black box would effectively turn it off
Yeah, pretty much. I love the game, but it was made for smaller screens.
But the actual effect of higher PPI for a given screen size is still smaller, sharper pixels
We know the bottom one can be turned off
If we’re talking about non-square pixels then yeah I’ll agree with that.
Square pixels though? Those do not give a shit about ppi if they integer scale, the pixels of the gba game will always be the sharpest and most accurate they possible could be with integer scaling, because you can’t magically make a square more sharper by stacking 4x4 squares instead of 2x2 squares, they’re already squares.
To say otherwise is to act like the GBA itself had non-square pixels.
Alright let’s say I’ve got a 4 inch 1024x768 display and a 40 inch one. Both of them showing the same image integer scaled to the same multiplier. Which image looks crisper?
They...should look the same on account of being integer scaled.
We’re not talking about 1024x768, this whole time I was talking about the Steam Deck’s 1280x800 screen.
There's no smudging or filler happening since it's integer scaled. A square will still look like a square integer scaled.
And even if we were talking about those, then like Eikouta explained, as long as they are integer scaled instead of being stretched to fit, they will look the same.
Well I just chose a resolution at random. Doesn’t matter the precise resolution, just that pixels per inch will always have an effect on the sharpness / clarity of the image
Except that’s not how integer scaling works in the first place. If you were talking about non-integer full size, that would at least make more sense.
Isn't this a different scenario?
A better comparison should be a 4 inch 1024x768 vs a 4 inch 2048x1535, viewing the same 1024x768 image at the same distance.
And it would be the same.
The image can look different when viewed on a 4 inch screen vs a 40 inch screen. The PPI argument though would be comparing an integer scaled 768 resolution screen vs say a 4k resoluton screen of the same size. In that scenario they would look identical and thus the PPI is irrelevant
The reason people are so obssessed with integer scaling is so that it'll look the same.
I think we are talking at cross purposes, I’m not talking about smudging or stretching etc etc
Exactly what I’m saying, PPI doesn’t matter at all when talking about Integer scaling because it already will look exactly as sharp as it would on a smaller screen with integer scaling.
The only reason it would arguably look “more pixelated/weird” on a bigger screen would be due to the game itself being stretched bigger than the screen it was intended to be played on.
The second part is what im talking about
Perhaps the word sharper caused confusion. Less pixellated
But PPI doesn't affect that at all when integer scaling
Even then, it’s still the same as it would be on GBA, it’s just the fact that it’s bigger than what it was intended to be (it’s like making a 10” 240x160 screen).
So the issue becomes less “it looks less accurate” and quite literally becomes “it looks too big, like I’m looking at it from a microscope”.
The only thing I can think of being related to what you say is that the screen is large enough (think TV size) + you stare at it close enough (eyes/head close to the screen) that your eyes can spot the individual pixel/grid even in a pure white background.
(Similar to how people zoom in on pixels to check for issue with camera etc).
But that should not apply in the typical handhelds nowadays.
I think it was solely because you specifically said it wasn't about whether it was integer scaled or not.
When GBA integer scales on the Steam Deck perfectly.
pocked ds bottom uis lcd
Yeah but we're in the Thor channel
Exactly, which is why I had issues with the original example given since ppi shouldn’t have mattered in the first place, the only thing that should matter is the very nature of playing a game on a screen several times larger than what it was meant to be played on.
but the talk was about pocket ds 5" low ppi screen
Oh I didn't notice that
And even that is dependent on the games in question and arguably the person playing them.
I have literally zero issue with Mega Man Zero or Battle Network on the Steam Deck since both of their artstyles are good enough to still work when effectively stretched, but I’d agree that FFTA would probably look weird on it.
I think FFTA just tries to squish too much onto the GBA's small screen so when blown up it just looks bad.
MMZ and BN have pretty well defined sprites so they look nice even enlarged.
Exactly what I’m saying.
Excellent input. Very informative.
Scaling will make ypu image smaller on the bigger screen. But whatever. I don't need walls text. You win or are correct. I don't really care.
You know you can just actually admit that you chose the worst possible jumping point for your take right?
Like, I would outright agree with your comment on lower and higher ppi’s mattering if you didn’t decide to say it about the one type of scenario where that literally wouldn’t matter.
I really don't care.
Cool.
Anyways trying to decide if I should just go base model or higher. Tried of these companies locking colors behind higher specs
higher if you want to play all the games
I don't emulate android switch. And my RP5 and Flip play everything I want
If the rp5 and flip play everything you want then the base model has the sane chip as them so you should be good with base
But only 50 dollars for a newer SOC.
Really up to you on if you want to spend the little extra for some more performance
It's a little extra for a lot more performance
Just thinking out loud
True
By “reinforced hinge” this means it is made out of metal? Is this an improvement over the Retroid Flips, did those utilize any metal at all?
Thankfully both the SD865 and SD8G2 are both well known chips in this space at this point.
Yeah and qol like better wifi and charging as well
Also will the analog stick caps be replaceable? I would like the option to throw on some high profile ones when I want to do streaming
Better wifi and I know now
Getting the better chip
Retroid used a "reinforced hinge" for the flip 2 as well lol
This what scares me
Especially because they are either the same company or at the least use the same factory etc. So either way it's a real concern
And is the 10 dollar off worth it?
Not to me, the pocket ds I pre-ordered because it was a significant increase in price after. The thor pre-order is like the joke that retroid does on pre-order. 10 bucks lost for peace of mind...I'll lose 10
10 dollars in 2025 will almost buy you a burrito. You can eat 1 less burrito... Or can you
Where I live it'll get you a taco bell bean burrito with sour cream lol
and a small water
I've never seen this much excitement for a handheld before. Evidence is how #1118633698179428362 has been flooded with posts
Between the Odin 2, portal, and now this, ayn is at least 3 out of the last 4 being big hits relative to the space (sorry mini)
Well it's the first of 2 dual screen handhelds that aren't a janky mess (sugar) so there's expected to be a mass amount of excitement for these 2 dual screen handhelds
I'm mostly excited to sell off my soon to be obsolete 3ds xl, dsi xl and RP5 tbh lmao
not really a joke to have consumer friendly pricing rather than weaponizing fomo....weird bad take bud.
Well both weaponize fomo, ones just better at it
Bad take? There is 0 incentive to pre-order something that has a decent chance at failure for a 10 dollar discount
At least ayaneo offers a solid discount that covers more than the tax lol
10 bucks is a joke
exactly. thats a good thing.....
Oh yeah pre orders arent limited right?
forcing people to buy becuase of the fear of the price increase is anticonsumer......but guess you fall for it so....
no point in arguing with someone too stupid to understand that.
Nope, pretty sure they make these to order, or at least something close to that
Forcing people to buy...and I'm the one that's stupid. Pre-order is a choice but since you need to resort to insulting someone in particular to make a point...lol. Good day to you
they generally arent. you arent getting the bennefit of guaranteeing a device since they will make more.
When companies do IGG they usually limit pre-orders. It depends on where they open up the orders
but I'm the stupid one so...what do I know lol
Is ayn customer service generally good?
ayn doesnt do IGG dipshit.
fuck you are stupid loll
depends
Bro this is too much vitriol over a preorder discount 😭
what are your standards for good customer service.
Similar to retroid?
Right? I mean I insulted a companies pre-order discount and someone had to come in and attack me. It's cool lol
In terms of customer service
yeah probably along those lines.
I was gonna say in general chinese companies are worse than western companies. but they are decent usually.
but even so... no guarantees how they will treat any arising issues. as we have even seen with retroid a few times almost not fixing issues. and not wanting to give out proper refunds until they got hit with backlash.
Alr, im just asking cause of the chance of hinge failure on the thor. Wanted to know if I could expect a replacement and stuff
If it does break
:/
tbh. odds are they would have a good response to hinge issues, but also.....theres no incentive to pre-order so unless you are really impatient. its probably best to wait a bit.
Alr, ill keep that in mind
Im still debating whether to pre roder or not
When do preorders close?
When it starts shipping?
supposedly mid october IIRC?
Might wait for a retro game corps video to really see if i want it
I would even give it a bit of extra time afterwards too.
if you are waiting and not gambling.
I remember the review units for the rp4pro being fine in reviews. and then the triggers dying a couple weeks later and then having the issue myself 2 weeks in.
luckily they did send out everyone replacement parts eventually...but yeh.
Dang
yeah. like. you can pre-order if you really want these devices day 1 and dont mind the gamble if there are any issues and if they will actually solve them.
Yeah, think ill just wait then
but they arent "selling out".
Does ayn include tariffs in check out?
no clue. not american lol
I think it’s pretty much, if you can’t handle FOMO then pre order, if you’re ok to take a risk then pre order, if you’re neither it’s best to wait
Me personally I’m willing to be a test pilot
Yeah
I'm not sure if I am lol
I usually boil it down to.... am I ok gambling this money away?
For sure, thankfully gaming isn’t my entire world so no biggy if the device is amazing or it sucks
But everyone’s expectations are different
I just hope it rocks
(Hope is not a strategy)
Yep, I’ll let you know around December January if it’s ok 😂
since we already know how the chipsets perform.
the battery could be a concern.
few months of testing.
also sometimes shipping takes a while to get out all the units anyways lol
and could be delayed lol
I remember it took forever to get the RPC lol
first the, tariff announcements with the states caused them to prioritize shipping to the states. almost exclusively for a week or so, then thas like 2 extra weeks of delays on units of specific colours lol.
Damn😭
really curious about battery life tho. its 6000MAH. which is smaller than an odin 2 but bigger than the Odin 2 mini. but thats before factoring in Dual screens so....who knows about that too....
could end up being a device that wants to be tethered to the wall.
It depends what your gaming situation is really
Also don’t forget brightness settings
My steam deck gets played in my recliner basically on power all the time
My retro handhelds just get played on trains and planes
The hinge components themselves used metal, but not the casing surrounding them.
Yup, it’s the same sticks that the Pocket Ace and Flip 1S use, so it’s the same ones as the Odin 2 and most of Retroid’s current stuff.
I would love to know conclusively whether gentle slow opening and closure is better than fast. I presume it is, but don’t have any data
Wait what the hell are you talking about? They’ve done Indiegogo for literally almost all their handhelds.
It probably is, but mainly in the same way that “Ben 10 slapping his Omnitrix down instead of simply pressing it like a regular button was the wrong way of doing it”.
I’ll keep playing my Flip2 alongside my Thor and see who lives the longest
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/odin2-the-new-generation-ultimate-gaming-handheld#/

Cough
So ayn doesn’t mind IGG then 😂
Literal only handhelds they’ve ever done outside of IGG was the Odin 2 Mini and now the Thor.
Pretty sure Nicole said pre orders on the website
All I'm saying is, using invective language to someone who was correct is not the way to go. Idk.
They already have the page up and ready on their website, it’s just currently marked out of stock for the obvious reason of it not being available.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
"fuck you are stupid loll"
It was unnecessary, plus also very wrong
That is my feeling, yes
The Odin 2 igg was so good when they announced they'd be delivering early
Good times
incredibly egregrious because absolutely wrong
Gee 🤣
For christs sake, the freaking Loki was on Indiegogo, only for them to take the page down and refund people for almost all but a few of the options due to the issues with development.
I wasn't going to dig that deep to prove myself correct. I just blocked the guy and moved on lol.
I think if you're going to have such strong emotional opinions enough to insult someone over you should probably be correct with the baseline facts
No kidding.
alrighty, time to do some work - have a good day/night everyone
Lol. Owned into oblivion
What is wrong with some people ? You don't need to be an ass just answer the question even though the dude had no clue what they were talking about .
Glad I went back up and read that
Played gba on my pocket s, it looked fantastic. Just need the right filter. Scanlines and grid 3x work very well and make some of the games look great.
But back on topic I am super excited for this device just like I am for the pocket ds. Anybody else getting both then ditching the one they like less? lol
Getting both ditching neither
it's so hard to justify more than 1 android gaming device
i'm saying this as i own uh
I'm thinking about doing that
at least 4
They’re not even new or clueless, they’ve been around for other Ayn stuff. I don’t get how they managed to say something this utterly wrong.
Pocket ds mostly for at home, thor if im taking it on the go and reasonably can just pocket it
Too true. But I'm getting both. If I keep both the thor is for the road, ds for home
getting DS and looking at thor reviews
That’s pretty much my plan as well. Get the Pocket DS now, get the Thor later down the line once we know if the hinge is good.
As sad as it is I'm excited just to have both with beautiful screens for streaming from my jellyfin server and not having to prop it up or hold it haha
maybe pick one up from #1118633698179428362 for discount price
Thor no brainer. Honestly not really even considering much else besides maybe a 1s DS or small windows handheld
I want to sell my pocket s for the konker elite, but i broke two of the clips trying to get into it since the battery was swollen.
Always wanted steam to make a mini deck. Looks like some others may take up the mantel
i got an ayaneo slide and it make me want the 1s KB instead
But i guess ill just replace the thermals and undervolt it, i like the design anyway.
Solid plan. The pocket ds, for those interested, is such a discount on igg that you'll be sad if you want one and don't pre-order. Thor I can wait to see how it fairs. But...hopefully Russ has his review out on the pocket ds before they ship lol
And my Loki's battery is spicy pillowed
I hope android dual screens allow using the 2nd screen just for on screen keyboard
I do have a onexplayer G1. Having a keyboard is really nice
Kinda a tossup between G1 and 1s DS
Aya runs sales pretty often and soon after release on their site. If you wait around for it youll definitely see what you want at a discounted price.
If people say the secondary makes an ok touch keyboard I'll consider it
Ouch, and that’s the handheld they flat out erased from everywhere.
Same way ayn does that after a certain point its just perpetually on sale at eb price.
They replaced spicy pillows with spicy pillows then sold the design to Brazil. Lol
Think(hope) they're done with x86 after that
It sucks too. Cause besides the battery they were an amazing small x86 device
I struggle to want to keep an x86, just seems like work compared to android for some reason. Been debating posting my f1 pro I just got for sale lol
X86 handhelds feal like a necessary evil to me, if I can play something on an android handheld instead I'll do that every single time
I mean you need batocera or steam os
Windows is just the fucking worst. Maybe the new Xbox will fix that. But I doubt it
It's why I still recommend the steam deck
At least to people who don't fucking love configuring shit
i LOVE setting up android devices. It's like the game to me, but windows...work 🙁
Same
It feels close to being usable ish....
I really hope it does and they push the new build to other handhelds and just make it more publically available. but man microsoft are kicking and screaming the whole way with this it feels like lol
other than the fact that valve can eat the cost of their own handhelds, the fact that their OS is so well optimized comparatively to windows is huge.
God, I just wish I could get Steam FFX/X-2 to run on one of these things without streaming from my Deck.
Or if someone knows how to fuck with Steam Link here, ig
IIRC, the vita/secret versions should be fine. but if you mean for save compatibility....yeah
hell....even the ps2 versions should be fine if you dont mind 4:3. and looking a bit older. but it should save some battery life.
Plus the widescreen cheats for the PS2 versions are actually pretty great. I remember even the UI would somehow adjust properly.
Same lol
Those versions don't have the boosts. And PS2 doesn't have the extra sphere grid/bosses, or the dresspheres.
Vita3k on Android also doesn't run X-2 well.
It's just not fun. It should be fun
Emudeck is fun.
Android can be fun
Sometimes it's just a giant ass pain
Not usually due to the setup and config. Luckily most of that is just transferring an SD card. But more so finding a button to remap
I tried retrobat. My frustration, first, is not being able to just easily set my hotkeys. Like you shouldn't have to edit a file for them just to have it overwritten later
Yeah. Getting to the meat of what's physically on an android handheld can be pain
I just go raw retroarch on Windows. Did a directory scan so everything is added there
Having said that I almost never emulate on pc
Makers take all kinds of shortcuts to make controllers map. Some root it. Some lock it back down. Etc. In that sense Linux is way easier
The only thing annoying about batocera and steam is they're both immutable. So every update you have to reconfigure stuff and regain root. I have a script that does everything I want. But it was painful to figure out things the first time
I rarely emulate on my deck but it's nice when it's there
I would emulate like crazy on a small x86 tho. If it's pocketable I'd do it
Ruh roh
Please don't fuck this up ayn
Please please please
Imagine a hinge that just works
Kinda funny when you see people brag about being in the top 10 of an IGG perk
I'm like, your chance of getting broken garbage is just that much higher 😆
you talking the extras from the international versions? its available you just need the PAL versions.
Ive only had 1 nintendo hinge go bad. but Ive seen many go bad on others....hinge is cursed.
Psychic was not in the PAL versions.
Among other things, lol. I don't have access to the PAL versions.
I've never had a laptop hinge break.
fair enough lol
They could make a proprietary wireless technology and just skip the ribbon cable in the hinge altogether

oh wait with laptop hinges? that goes up from 1 to 2
the hinge was too tight and actually snapped part of the chasis, and it would protrude out the bottom lol.
Like, I know a lot of people have Opinions about X-2, but I fuckin' love it, and need HD remaster versions to have all the content. So if I'm gonna do HD remaster versions, I'd like to have the speed up/super mode/etc boosts forwhen I replay.
good gameplay so I wont judge too harshly lol.
sometimes a game doesnt have to have a great story if it just plays well lol
Why they're not all ripping off Powkiddy I'll never understand. Never recall seeing a broken V90 or V90s hinge, and for all the issues with the X18/X18s, the hinge wasn't one of them.
I enjoyed the story for what it was telling and the wider implications of everything, too, but I definitely know that's not common.
What's the hinge design that Zephyrus uses? Where it sort of sits on the top screen when folded out
Have you seen someone who has owned a V90/V90S for more than a month
The + Last Mission marks it as Japanese only, I'm pretty sure.
Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission was a Japan-exclusive release, and adds new dresspheres, a Creature Creator system, a Fiend Arena, and a new dungeon: Iutycyr Tower.
English patched.
Oh you’re planting dangerous ideas in my head
FFX-2 gets so much unnecessary hate. I love that game as well.
You. You have great opinions.
As do you 😊 That game has probably the best battle system in the entire series imo

It's super fun. I adore just farming AP.
Also the Creature Creator/arena stuff is weirdly fun.
true. that hate should go towards more deserving titles in the franchise history 😛
Yoo, I love X-2 a lot
the best part is not specifying which title I could possibly mean lol
My people!
I think we are in the era of X-2 appreciation where ppl overlook the problems and see that its actually pretty good.
I remember when that happened for 8 a while back lol.
I mean
I like X-2 a lot in part cause I played it before X
I didn't have X for a good while
on the PS2
Although it's amazing, I hoped for a followup to X (at the time) amazing ctb
Has it been confirmed that you can turn off the bottom screen?
Yep
Also, how long do you think can I still cancel the preorder? The device is supposed to ship in mid October, right?
Yeah, aslong as it hasn't shipped then you'd probably be able to cancel it pretty easily. If not directly on the site, then just sending AYN an email
just basic tribalism ... pretty normal on this day and age
i did and havent bough MSi ever since
The Loki was on the website not IGG
Odin 1, Odin 2 and Odin Portal were done on IGG
Odin 2 Mini, Thor and Loki were/are done through their website
how would old retro systems scale on bottom screen?
…Is this just a “reminder” post from someone letting others that “may or may not be aware” know? If not and it’s from someone who’s actually surprised, I don’t get how they didn’t already realize how big it would be just from knowing it’s a 31:27 bottom screen and 16:9 top screen.
just watch content on the RP Classic/Mini V2 or Pocket DMG if you are interested in that
Pretty much.
Take the RP Classic or Ayaneo DMG's screen and you have your results. Great for GB, GBC, WS, GG, NGP, SNES (8:7), NES, vertical arcade, solid 4:3 content, not good for 16:9
Not everyone will know and this is simply a visual representation for them. Im not sure what the issue with it is?
yeah, I was wondering if I could use the bottom screen for older system and upper for modern 16:9 gaming
Yep
No issues on my end, mostly just curious since it’s the same as what it would be for using the Retroid Dual Screen on the Mini V2.
Well, except for the fact that this is gonna be a 6” screen instead of a 5.5” screen.
Ive never watched a video on the RP mini amd 31:27 is an unusual aspect ratio so something visual like that is actually helpful
Like, having a dual screen clamshell like this lends itself to a lot of versatility in games and multitasking like the bottom being a media player while the top is your game
The more i just see people calling this pointless or redundant (which isn't many, but still), the more i just look
Confused
Wait, people are calling it pointless? Why?
It's very rogue comments here and there, but it kinda boils down to DS purist, not seeing the point of dual screen, or pointing at Android holding it back as a flaw
Like, even ignoring the part where “playing DS/3DS on a single horizontal screen was not great for most games” was the main reason people usually recommended playing on original hardware instead, this still seems at least more useful than otherwise?
People hate options 🤣
…Ok now that you say that, it makes way more sense.
exact same as everything already does on the pocket dmg and rpc.
They should just scale the same as the image right? Since they're 4:3 as well?
Well, the main ones anyway. I know there are other weird ratios somewhere
uh no....not all retro consoles are 4:3
Yeah I added a bit lol
tbh tho. unless you want to use the top screen for 16:9 videos. while playing games on the bottom screen, I'd prob stick to playing everything top scren otherwise. gonna be a bigger picture.
NES, SNES, Genesys, Master System, PS1, N64, PS2, GC
I would just play everything on the top screen as well tbh
yeah 95% of the time.
might just use the top screen if I wanna watch a stream or video while playing games if I really wanted to. but yeh. probably not gonna do that much .
tho playing games on that bottom screen will look good.
reddit beuing reddit 😄
but at least nicely vizualized
reddit people being whiny wankers? i am shocked
I can see myself using one of the screens to keep a guide open rather than watching videos often, but if there's the option to turn off one of the screens to save on battery, that'd be even better.
This is something that doesn't really impact me because I'm getting the Pro model anyways even if Black ended up being the color I like most (it's not), but the extra color options being locked to Pro and Max feels even more silly now that we have a budget Lite option to pick from.
Because the base 8gen2 model also doesn't get the other color options.
Makes it to where if you only wanted the Lite model for DS and 3DS, but wanted it in a different color, you have to still go up to Pro and pay $100 extra x)
Alright now I’m back on the fence
For OLED i always stick to black
I’ve been reading that the 8g2 and 865 base models shouldn’t have a significant difference in battery life, which is my main concern between the two rn
Bottom screen different size and aspect ratio you wont be able to tell
no big downside to just waiting on retail prices and seeing how the QC shapes up
?? What was this random ping for
I think it'll come down to whether you want to fast-forward in 3DS RPGs or not. They'll both largely upscale 3DS to 4x and play at full speed, but the 8Gen2 will probably let you speed up more.
Perfectly fair and will be especially nice for the bottom screen, but I think the top screen is less impacted by the color option which is where I'll be play every other system that's not DS and 3DS since it's enitrely just the screen up there
It's not like the RP5 or the Portal where the color contrast with the OLED screen is noticeable
I generally like getting more fun colors even on non-clamshells
Unless they start removing SKUs
Anbernic no longer stocks 8gb RG477M
So forced to buy the higher tier
eh true, though no need to invent our own misery yet 😄
That's true I guess
I do think Black just seems much more sleeker with glass design
Certain devices look good with color options like RP Classic
If so, I don’t really have a use for the 8g2 then bc I play at normal speeds most of the time
I’m just confused bc there’s a lot of vague info being thrown around and I’m not sure what I can believe
The 865 will be fine for 3DS. Check any review of the RP5/Mini.
I know that for sure, I’ve had a mini before lol
8Gen2 for only $50 more (~£38 for me) is just such a steal though. I'd be interested in the 865 if it was cheaper.
All this talk about the best way to play 3DS
Thought id share the way I play dont think it can be topped
Save states, 1080p up res while still maintaining the stereo 3D graphics
What glasses are those
Rokid Max
But any XR Glasses will work
Dolphin and Azahar support stereo 3D natively
But why
What about games that require touch screen
Speaking as someone who turns off the 3d on my new 3dsxl and swapped to a new 2ds XL later
There needs to be a case study on people who unironically use the 3D effect on every game. 3D movies aren't even a thing anymore these days. It's such a fad
Like the 3d effect can be nice but most of the time it's just a slight visual effect
The only time I've enjoyed turning it on was when the Virtual Boy homebrew emulator came out lol
Honestly when playing Mario 3D Land or Links Between World without 3D effect those games just not the same to me
Even on Dolphin emulator playing 1080 Snowviarding in stereo 3D just feels good
For me stereo 3D is way better on games than movies
An example in Mario 3D Land there is a section camera pans into a birds eye view angle and Mario falls down platforms below. The stereo 3D effect looks incredible here. Even when I turned of 3D to compare it looked.boring
Eben 2D sprite games like Streets of Rage 2 3D looks so cool in 3D
I played RE4 on Dolphin woth 3D it was so much nicer
The low res 3DS screen woth cross talk doesnt compare to high resolution stereo 3D to XR glasses
Real question: why the fuck do people care? If you need the extract ratio then get a dsi xl. The screens are going to be way bigger than the ds or 3ds. You otherwise want 16:9 for wide 3d game compatibility on an android device. I don't to steam, or play wide screen systems like psp on a dinky screen
So, what about touch screen @latent roost
For most 3DS games touchscreen not used much but what I do is have the touchscreen on the Ally screen
Can you still see the Ally with glasses on?
Yes move eyes down
And you can duplicate bottom screen as a small box on glasses too
Now that i have glasses that fix my depth perception i have to say i appreciate the 3ds a lot more
Idk what 3DS games people are playing that doesn't need touch screen lol. Luigi mansion, any mario platformer, Zelda, they all need quick access for powerups or items
Mario 3D Lands doesn't use touch screen other than tapping and item
Idk, seems like a dog setup for 3D enthusiast, not 3DS games enthusiasts
So it uses touch screen then
Yes and the bottom screen is visible
With the glasses the surrounding is still visible
Its not like VR
You can easily tap rhe screen if yoy want to swap powerups
I wouldn't say it breaks the game at all
The flexibility in android makes up for weirdness about touching the screens to activate them. Typing on the bottom to keep the top free is going to be 👌👌👌👌👌
Would you say this would break the game for you the inventory to change oowerups taking half second to look down and press the mushroom button
It's just not the 3DS experience though.
Yes
No id say way better
As a person who owns both 3DS XL and regular 3DS
And this setup
So I can compare all setups
To each their own i guess
I use it first 2D games too
Not just 3D
Massive screen on a light pair of.glasses
This isnt like a VR headset heavy and awkward to setup
I don't like playing with glasses period. I think that's my main issue
Plug and play USB c out
I'd still look like a clown
Lol I wouldn't play this outside
I dont think i even play handhelds outside
I mean Nintendo made the 2DS in part because most people didn't care about the 3d effect in the first place
I agree but the 3DS screen dont compare to XR high resolution screens woth no cross talk
2DS is my favorite form factory, but the screens are very dim unfortunately, and no nipple button
New 2DS XL is my favorite of the 3ds line
This just seems like a lot of work to play 3ds games. My main thing stopping me from finishing games is needing to do more than grab a handheld and waking it up from sleep mode
The way rhe camera pans etc
Luckily that is the case with Ally setup
I imagine something Mario & Luigi Dream Team would be a really horrible experience on anything that doesnt display the screen near each other and had touch functionality.
Can put it on sleep or hibernate
Glasses dont need charging its just an external display
Used power from Ally
Yes anything that uses both screens extensively is a no go
This too. It needs to be one device. It's why the "second screen add-on" is a jank turd imo
Id say 2nd screen is worse to setup as it needs to be strapped on
Glasses is plug and play
Glasses need to be stored somewhere and plugged in
And make sure your vr headset and ally are fully charged. And going to your spot with all your crap set up. And sitting up right on the couch or a chair to use this. With a clamshell, especially 6 inches, i can just slot that in my pocket, go do stuff and have it with me wherever i sit down. Or lay down or whatever
You dont need to strap it on eben a ph9ne with a controller attachment more difficult
Did you not read, the thing is not a vr headset and it doenst require charging.
Only the Ally does
This is true but doesnt change much in the argument
It's still an additional accessory.
Thr glasses allows you to even lie down in bed and play
I'll cross that off the list. But it requires more changing than an android device that will probably get 10 hours of use and last for weeks in sleep mode
I have never comfortably laid on my side with glasses on
Withon my Ally X, Citra emulation only.b7rns less tha. 8w
Do android devices not support glasses?
Let me go to my basement and carry a bundle of wires and devices up so I can go sit down and relax while also cutting out my entire vision
1 wire
The glasses to Ally thats all
What other wires you are talking about?
You said the glasses needs charg8ng
Now you saying bundle.or.wires
Im confused
Why spread incorrect information
Its cool to say yeah its not for you
But you making things up now lol
I'm also going to complain about comfort factor. One of the reasons the Duo or attaching a second screen sucks is cause then the bottom screen is so big you can barely use it with your thumbs. A real ds sized device will a lot more comfortable than reaching across the screen of a rog ally. Or using an rog ally period cause its a massive brick
Who gives a shit
One wire thats 6ft is more wire than 3 1ft long ones
Wouldn't the glasses be technically more comfortable
No neck strain
Or looking at small screens
Play in bed on couch any position you want
I'm comparing it to literally folding a clamshell into my pocket and carrying it. You are talking about grabbing massive rog ally and vr glasses with a cable long enough to not snag on something when used with a pc
The attaching isnt comparable to controller attachments
Kalo, I think what we are trying to say is:
Your setup looks great for experiencing the 3D effect. SOME 3DS games seem to play amazingly. But.
It is not the best way to experience the 3DS library. Most people do not care about the 3D gimmick.
This is why Thor is so much better. It is pocketable like the 3DS. It has screen layout like the 3DS. It has button layout like 3DS. It folds (yes people want to fold and unfold their 3DS).
I do not buy an OLED TV and go "GUYS, THIS IS THE BEST GBA EXPERIENCE". It's just not. The best GBA experience are things like RG34XXSP or something with a 3:2 screen, and a small, handheld form factor.
Hopefully that helps diffuse this.
Because no clamping required
There is nothing about this thats comparable on a convenience level
Yes agree with that Thor is more portable
My goal was for you to agree Thor is a better 3DS experience
Depends on the game
Something like Mario 3D Land with no 3D effect is terrible
Cuz I think kalo is putting way too much value on the 3D effect
Sone games are made for the 3D gimmick
Said no one ever, except kalo
Just watch the shadow of Mario
I sit down and play a game. Then i fold it up and put it in my pocket and then I make dinner and do dishes. Then I pull it out again and use it before taking my dog for a walk. Then come back relax on the couch or bed before going down stairs to use my main tv. I dont want to use this rog ally and glasses is what I mean
It makes sense as to why someone would use it
And thats fine and I do the same with the Ally and Glasses
Gif of man with a whole snes in his back pocket
Again the 3D effect for me personally imrpoves the experience
Nooo don't fold your Ally
I have a pair of those kind of glasses, might try this never thought of doing that, didn't realize dolphin had 3d support
But I can see why some wont care for it
Sorry I dont go outside with my handbelds
I meant just put it to aside lol
I have other things to do outside rather than play games
Waverace and 1080 is insane woth 3D effect
I'd take a version of the thor with 3d but thats it. And only if its not at the cost of the 120hz olee
I guess im the only one who appreciates the stereo 3D visual effect on Mario 3D Land ajd Zelda. Nintendo definitely had the 3D in mind when producing those games. Its obvious with the camera angles and panning
To be fair I got those XR glasses for free so I guess not having to pay for it helps.with the enjoyment
I still have a 3ds if its that important. But I played through those games the first time with it off cause it gave me a headache
I cancelled.my.order and got a refund but still received the glasses
Damn lucky
The glasses give.less headache as no cross talk
The vast majority of 3ds games are not made with that in mind and even the ones that are, are still largely playable without it
Have ayn responded to anything re the similarity with the flip 2 hinge?
3D Land is the only title I can think of that was designed with 3D in mind. There are literally screens that are like "turn on the 3D!!!"
Yes but what I saying is with the stereo 3D effect these games look better and feel more immersive
dude- shows off cool setup
chat - "Lets all find a million ways to shit on it"
Even games that are not designed around it
It's true
For example Resident Evil 4 on Dolphin looks great in stereo 3D
My issue was not with his setup but more so the implication that that's somehow a convenient way to play 3ds games. I also never attacked him or took it that seriously. It's just a discussion
It's like when people post a retroid pocket 5 and are like, this is the best way to play n64. Like no it isnt lol.
Fair enough
this has been going on for like 20 min before you jumped in
Oh lol my bad
Discord conversations are a mess sometimes
Thats cause someone started making things up, VR head set when it isnt, or too many wires when its 1 wire, you need to charge so many things er no the glasses dont require charging etc
Those false statements were across different posts which i simply addressed
I liked the 3d on the 'new' units, and this is something i'd considered purchasing for flights & stuff, it's definitely more convenient & less fiddly than the RDS, and it works on android devices with 1 cable
Fairs
Guys check out my handheld tower
Can't wait for the Thor to replace the dusty old DSi
Id say DSi still is better than a Thor in someways though
More portable
Less input lag
You still can maintain save states with a flash cart
the thor will have a 120hz display, I doubt it'll have any significant input delay
Native hardware has less input lag
I can't wait for moba pad on switch 2. Without adapters
It is literally proven that with emulation runahead techniques you are actually able to produce less input delay than original hardware
120hz still had more input lag than original hardware according to his tests
Does DS has runahead support
I know on dreamcast retroarch doesn't allow it
while its technically better in terms of input lag, im also not speedrunning any platformers on 3ds so its not realistically something i worry about in the slightest. ive played 3d land on a surface duo with a bluetooth telescopic controller, i think ill be fine
Which core allows runahead?
retroarch has it, but you need immense power to run games at a 2 frame runahead. My snapdragon 870 is barely able to emulate ds games if I try to maximize it
Dreamcast doesnt have runahead
Are you sure DS does
Not all cores support runahead
I mean I'm not gonna incinerate my Dsi. It will still exist but I'm willing to bear some of the downsides of emulation for the ability to play my retro games on modern displays with modern controls and UI that isn't slow and cumbersome
I also don't really notice input lag as long as it's not super egregious. Especially for single player games
yes it does, I've tried it before
i notice input lag in fighting games. like i play marvel 3 and if the tv has too much lag i can't play. but thats not what im doing with 3ds games lol
Wild the SDG2 be powerful enough ti have rinahead enabled at 1 frame?
it should be able to do 2 frame runahead
That would be sick
although in retroarch you can probably only increase the resolution by 2x
Honestly i never noticed inout lag at all and I just adjusted. Played a 2D Mario on my Android handheld. And played decent enough. But it was only when I played it on another handheld that was Linux with runahead enabled I realised the difference lol. Suddenly I was speed running through levels and it felt easier
Lesson learned is just cause you cant tell doesnt mean it wont make a difference
Fairs but fighting games is probably the genre I play the least so that's not a worry for me either way
Only turn based RPG it wont make a difference
I honestly never felt the need to really play ds games on anything other than my real ds but I've tried drastic before on my 120hz phone and the input delay was not noticable at all. At this is coming from someone who does tend to be picky about latency and all that.
I don't notice any difference between original hardware and anything I played on my RP5. I also don't think playing on original hardware made me any better at any game I play
On my phone the inout lag difference wasn't huge
But i played drastic one my Switch with Android partition
The lag was awful I noticed instantly
Like on castlevania when jumping and changing direction and attacking at the same time
DS emulation on Switch isn't the greatest though
It's better on a halfway decent Android handheld
My phone was 120hz
It is important that you set your phone to be in 120hz mode. Made that mistake before.
input delay was instantly fixed
Well seeing Russ tests on RG477M
It showed 120hz removed 1/3 of input lag from a 60hz screen
Not as quick as original hardware but much closer
I believe that but I'm glad I'm not the type of person who notices this stuff. I'm blissfully ignorant
Runahead literally fixes any of that
so the bottom screen has the same aspect ratio as the RPC one? (or rather, is the same screen?)
yes
ok, nice!
the LG Wing bottom screen is the only small-ish OLED panel we have right now, aside from maybe even more niche stuff like the OLED we mod into Gameboy Colors 😂
I want the Thor for being able to play both square and rectangle aspect ratios independently, as to have minimal black borders
I don't very much care for watching media content while gaming or DS and 3DS emulation
im hoping we eventually start seeing this phones oled screen. "4.02 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuP-MB_UWOE
The IKKO Mind One is a super compact smartphone that measures only 86mm x 72mm or about 3.3-inches by 2.8-inches. It runs both Android 15 and IKKIO’s proprietary software. The phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 with a 50-megapixel Sony sensor camera. The display is a 4-inch AMOLED panel protected by Sapphire Glass.
The phone also comes ...
if that wasn't g99 & actually listed the resolution somewhere i'd be all over it
i couldnt find reliable specs for the screen size so used an image with a full screen image of the device
pink is 4:3 and yellow 1:1
?
so.. grey is this screen?
yeah
i'm not convinced it's not just the lg wing display again
lol maybe. but the size is 4.02 vs 3.92.... OR we cant trust some youtuber giving out screen specs
hmm
probably the latter lol
the site also says 4.02 https://www.ikkoaudio.com/products/mind-one-phone?srsltid=AfmBOooogvCLqXfAudlgHS0VmM0kWxmJreCjlwsqJqFekBMinQGIFyNC
sorry youtuber
it's got the rounded corners
what's the lg wing screen aspect ratio... sideways?
27:31
hmm
i do love that the keyboard case has a hi-fi dac built in..
yah, cool alternative to the litephone tho
theyre probably counting the bezel in their 4.02
mhm
i guess the only way to "improve" it for the thor 2 in terms of screens is make the top screen the portal screen as its 1 inch larger and 800 peak brightness vs 650. would of course be a bigger device but you could squeeze in some offset on the sticks and dpad/buttons
needs more knuckles
Thor Portal: 7 inch top, mortgage screen bottom
I bet we see it in less than 12 months
manifesting
The only possible way they could make a followup worse is making the thing even bigger
Id love to see a Thor without the 2nd screen. 200 dollars for SD865 and 250 for SDG2
This way you can have inset D Pad
No because you get a bigger screen thats 120hz
And SDG2 model
There are many like me not interested in the 2nd screen but want the 6inch 120hz screen in a pocketable clamshell formfactor
just get the Thor and turn off the second screen man
this is the best it's going to get in a while
Yeah thats what in going to do but would have proffered no second screen and cheaper price as well as inset D Pad and right stick
buddy, you arent playing competitive cod on a dsi...lol
As mentioned before runahead solves the issue
Ftr, I'm copying this to my clipboard for anyone going forward asking about dual screen emulators for devices like this:
- Azahar main releases support dual screen
- MelonDS Nightly fork supports dual screen
- Cemu experimental fork supports dual screen, though its implementation atm is very confused
- PPSSPP too while we're at it
Anyone else can take it too
main release has it? I thought it was a specific fork that had it. but its already implemented in main now? cool.
Yep, it is indeed implemented in main now!
Someone PR'd it, got it working, it's all good
how is screen resizing and swapping in Azahar main?
By the way, I contacted Russ and asked him to test out some styluses when he reviews the Thor. He said he'll be trying out a few and see how they work
good idea. I was gonna do the same personally lol.
I don't have a dual screen device myself to test it, but nobody who has messed with it so far has mentioned issues.
has anyone tried nooDS
I prefer it over melon usually
I wonder when we'll see the first DS handheld with built-in stylus
the powered universal styluses for capacitive screens seem worth looking into so we dont need to use those garbage rubber tip ones.
worst case scenario, those plastic disc bottom ones might be the way to go if the powered styluses arent great.
What is nooDS
yeah, that would be nice, they could go with something like the motorola g stylus uses.
it's a DS emulator
As long as it has raw save support, I'll give it a try
does it do <2x scaling?
yes
so anyone paying extra 50$ or 100$ for more than the lite one and why?
Colors
More efficient chipset battery wise, more high end capabilities, and I got the spare funds
I don't trust the non transparent colors and all the advantages of having a better chip
And it's only $50 more so feel like I might as well
I'm probably gonna get a Black Max model
100 more from the light model. Base 8g2 is still black only
weird that there is no 512 gb model
Oh didn't realize that, well guess I'm getting the 12gb model then
8 gen 2 and colors
max for better switch emulation, more headroom for winlator, higher texture settings in high-end android games, prefetching larger texture packs for PS2/GC, more headroom for running apps dual-screen, maybe some advantages with PS3 emulation in the future, won't need to buy another sd card, future proof enough for me to tap out for a good long while
I like the rainbow
i think the transparent purple is going to look real sharp with the glass front
purp gang
The funny thing is...the rabbit hole I went down with pricing it's like....easy to upgrade multiple times bcz it's only 50 more from lite to base, then only 50 for base to pro. Lol
And if I'm already getting pro....why not just go max lol
i am digging the rainbow but people are saying the purple since plastic
Yeah I get that lol, especially since it's around the same price as an SD card
Funny how tiered pricing does that tho lol
Only 50 to 80 more sounds good. But if you look at lite vs max. 250 vs 430
Yeah, and they also skimped on storage on the pro model to make the max more appealing
also anyone in the states...and be prepared for the tariff? thinking i should pre-order and cancel depend on taco news
I'm probably just going to wait till the end of September to preorder, we should have a better idea of how the tariffs will affect it by then
the odin 2 had a pro max difference of 256 to 512 for 60 more, the portal of the same class is 512 and 1tb for 100 more, and now the thor is 256 to 1tb for 80 more. it seems inline for their pricing and even a "deal" compared to their last release
I'll probably yolo it. I'm not going with the top model anyway
a 1tb sd card will run you anywhere from 62 to 90 dollars depending on brand
Tarrifs could be up down and sideways for the next 3.5 years...
Sure, but for the portal you didn't have to buy the max model to get 512 gb of storage, that's not money saved if you never had to buy it in the first place
the way the government is being understaffed right now, combined with almost daily changes, i doubt the post office will be ready for the tariffs and de minimis removal. that could mean they dont charge us right away or they charge us nonsensical amounts because theyre as confused as we are
Who isn't Rollin deep in SD cards anyway
considering I almost always buy a $70-90 sd card for 1tb. might as well just get a 1tb from the start
