#Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

I was playing vs xelotath (green) so my sanity was low pretty regularly from the enemies but I can imagine it being easier to keep higher if you were opposing one of the other elder gods or whatever
I was opposing the red guy, so sanity was no problem at all. Enemies were all super tanky though, so that was annoying.
XELOTATH SANTAK PARGON PARGON PARGON PARGON PARGON NAROKATH PARGON
lmao the number of times spells started saying "pargon" by the end
Yeah, that was dumb too. They had enough runes, they could have done different combinations and made it sound way cooler.
I didn't even realize the chant was the actual rune names until it had pargon in it four times
I PARGON think PARGON they PARGON could PARGON have PARGON done PARGON more PARGON with PARGON the PARGON magic PARGON system PARGON too
they had what, 14 runes?
quiet a few tbh.
atleast a dozen if you include the alignment runes
Not being able to move for the higher level spells was pretty crap tbh
so, they could have had 3432 different combinations with just those 14.
Part of the reason why the guardian fight was so awful
But
PARGON
PARGON
The sanity felt like a cheap trick.
I guess the god ones were not able to be combined though, so it's more like combinations of 6 items with 11 unique elements...
that is amazing
so, only 462 possible combinations.
The complaint of rebuilding the spells was pretty legit too
Its like dude I already know the spell throwing 2 extra pargons in there was NOT engaging
I forget did you need a L5 for that fight? Most of the combat situations you would be fine with the L3 version
yeah, you should have unlocked spells you already knew when you got the 5 and 7s, I guess they just really wanted the summon creature ones to be "different" spells
You only "need" the L3, L5 makes it go a lot faster. I don't think its possible to do a L7 with the opportunity windows you get to cast
except they were still the same...
Not sure if you have level 7 at that time
I think that chapter is where you get the 5 iirc
Yes, I know, but they have different spell names, they should have just called it summon creature
No I'm just talking about the fact that an L3 Heal is the same as an l7 heal
but 12 spells is better than 10.
Pargon clearly should have been the 4th entity, not mortok or whatever it was called.
It can be used to cast invisibility
Which makes the rest of the game a lot easier if you spam it
that rune ended up being super useful for some situations bc of the invisibility
like with the slower characters
Oh i'm not saying it was fun
colonial man and roberto what's his shit
Fun and "Fine" are completely different
-# pargon
I hardly used the spells unless I had to.
there were SO MANY bone thieves in that level
power?
it's a bit difficult to survey when you're getting punched by five possessed workers at the same time
Pargon is the "power" rune
building spells was dull. maybe the lowest point of the game and there were a lot
I never knew being a civic engineer was so harrowing
Yeah I was agreeing with your point by yelling pargon a buncha times
I get it now
Idk its friday on labor day weekend and we're supposed to get out early but we're just playing the waiting game
so
until then PARGON
I like powerhouse of the cell. But that is another better horror game
I thought it was kind of darkly funny how all of the survey captions were like "this would probably be fine with an extra pillar or two" but his report in the cutscene was "it's full of demons"
I did not like the 2nd much and 3rd birthday is kind of trash
Well the second is an actual survival horror game, right?
first one is
though.
And the third is run and gun
I thought the first one was good, weird as hecc, but pretty good. Uh that was another game where the combat got really weird towards the end
it's run and gun but bad
to the point where (iirc) certain actions did like nothing
Dropping blasphemy in chat
like RE4
nope
I played it for the first time on the switch too so I'm way past the original release. Did not ever try the remake
Nope. I don't like to play past RE3. The later games or just something else to me. More arcade play style to me. I don't get the anxiety of a horror game from them.
I mean 100% they're action games from there on out
I think 4 is still sorta stressful atleast early on. But 5 is just SILLY
The are good games. Just don't get the OG RE feel to them. More like COD Nazi Zombie feel.
yep. Not gonna argue with you at all. I just think RE4 is still an OK game (not great, kinda crazy how people still parrot it as like the most influential action game of all time)
Anyway, this game is not that lol. You almost done here Jay?
I got done last night. Final boss was boring. Do the same thing 20 times. I liked Ch9 boss the best and Ch11 overall the best.
Mostly on the same page but I hated the ch9 boss lol
I was Green. What color did you use because the bosses are different to the color.
I kind wish there were more boss fights in each CH
Finished. I basically echo everything Liquid said in his summary. 6/10 game for me. In game it showed 12h, in RA 14:30 h
Overall, I'll take it over Luigi's Mansion we've played some time ago. Boy did that game drag
I also did green
I agree Luigi Mansion was worse than this. Fatal Frame was better though
Fatal Frame 2 next Oct.
Luigi's mansion is awful. Fatal Frame is great. II is amazing.
3 is okay... not as good as the other two.
It does padding for paddings sake too with the 100 hp ghosts, and they can run away after you hit them for just a bit, so you're running around chasing this stupd fat ghost with the really clunky controls. It's awful. and the giant boo boss fight is a huge middle finger. Fully deserves the 2/5 review I gave it.
oh wait, I gave it a 1. and I still stand by it. lol.
Yeah the chasing Ghost at 100hp was just bad padding.
I was already mad at the game with the giant boo boss fight, and then it pulled that stunt. I hated that game.
Have an issue where the game is crashing in Chapter 9, ||can’t progress past the nurse getting attacked by the bonethief thing||
I’m using a flip 2
huh. No idea. It worked fine for me. I was playing on a steam deck.
What dolphin version are using? I use dolphin for handheld on my EVO.
I’m not sure, but despite crashing 4 or 5 times at the same spot, I just tried it again and I was fine. So I guess I’m good now, lol
Glad it's working now.
Finished chapter 7 and now I am understanding the frustrations with backtracking. This priest gets too tired too quickly with all the running and backtracking
Mine did freeze for a half second at that same spot, but continued on okay. Maybe I just got lucky.
I think the priest was the last character I really enjoyed. Kind of went downhill after that.
lol don't tell me that, I'm just about to start Priest
Ok gang, gonna have to ask for help. Chapter 9, ||phase 2 of final boss|| I can’t seem to get ||the boss to glow in the point to show its vulnerable to the magic attack||
Any ideas? This is a green playthrough
if you're too close to the boss, it won't glow
Thank you
Presume the same is if I’m too far away?
I never tried standing really far away. I just had a similar issue and figured it was because I was standing right at the edge of the chasm under the boss. backing away a little bit would trigger the glowing.
Ok chapter 10 now, looking forward to this glorious frustration free experience
You know, I’m starting to think that ||the cop in the beginning|| was actually ||skeleton dude||
Also amused by the servants in chapter ten going|| “here we go again, the master of the house is just wandering around brandishing a sword, occasionally swinging at doors (when the wrong button is pressed) and we shall just pretend to scrub as if there’s nothing wrong”||
I feel like back then, you knew better than to question your employer. Rich people are kinda insane in general I feel. ||He might have taken it a little too far though…||
I feel like the universe is conspiring against me to finish this game. I was going to play the night before last and then my hot water heater burst. Stuff like that just keeps coming up. This one may defeat my streak
It's not the worst game I've ever played for game of the month but definitely one of the longest that I really don't want to play
We can get thereee, i didnt save and died on chapter 4 and had to start over entirely lol
Godspeed on your waterheater
I'm loving this game so far, but I had to take a moment to laugh at this super niche oversight
Paul Luther's chapter takes place in the year ||1485|| and it involves a key, very early on: ||the podium key|| that looks like this:
It is, unmistakably, a type of key known as a ||tubular key|| which, wasn't popularized until ||1933|| and, if you wanted to be generous, dates back to probably ||1784|| with a lock known as ||The Bramah Lock|| lol
Now, were there instances of ||tubular locks|| before then? Probably. Could the forces of Eternal Darkness have made some kind of lock out-of-time? Sure. But did this still get a chuckle out of me? yes.
This is the sort pedantisism I respect
lol it was just so kooky to see it
Finished fireman. Think I’m to the last chapter
You’re very close. Just one more long-ish backtracking chapter to go, and the underwhelming final boss fight.
Think I finished 7th symbol but need to make family food before I finish.
Sad thing is this is the only GotM I played this month and I started pretty much immediately especially since I voted for it. Pretty sure I’ll finish which is important to me since I voted for it.
It really seems like it’s got the components of what could have been a great game (with maybe a better combat system also). But just didn’t utilize the unique components well. But most of us have pretty much said that exact same thing
Yep. Why it's a MID game to me. Lots of cool ideas just nothing done great
To me, that puts it a step above mid. At least it tried something new and took some risks. Sure, it failed to really capitalize on it, but it wasn’t just some RE / silent hill clone, so it gets points for that from me.
For me, the story and continuity was good enough to bring it up a bit over mid. 6.5/10
I think the sanity effects bring it up a bit. Very fun way to mess with a player. What other game is giving you an end screen and a sequel ad mid game because you’re going crazy? Or a BSOD on a GameCube lol. I can imagine a parent seeing that when their kid is playing and having a good laugh.
The BSOD was great. This one kept me playing. Didn't want to rage quit like Fantastic Dizzy
I've had a blast with this over the past few days. Can't seem to work a gun well enough, but melee with the right buffs is great lol
tbf tho... this is why you haven't seen it done elsewhere
https://patents.google.com/patent/US6935954B2/en
A video game and game system incorporating a game character's sanity level that is affected by occurrences in the game such as encountering a game creature or gruesome situation. A character's sanity level is modified by an amount determined based on a character reaction to the occurrence such as taking a rest or slowing game progress and/...
Finished. Yay!🎉
Patenting game mechanics is dumb. I know the Nemesis system was also patented and Warner Brothers have barely done anything with it.
oh yeah, 1000% agreed, stupidest legal thing in gaming lmao
and we see, Nintendo did so many things with a Sanity system since ED
but seeing as they're currently suing Palworld devs over a game mechanic that the Palworld devs created first that Nintendo was somehow awarded a patent for after the Palworld devs had already implemented the mechanic in an older game of theirs, I don't blame anyone for not testing the waters with Nintendo's legal team
Another personal favorite patent of mine. Behold -- swinging on a swing: https://patents.google.com/patent/US6368227B1/en
A method of swing on a swing is disclosed, in which a user positioned on a standard swing suspended by two chains from a substantially horizontal tree branch induces side to side motion by pulling alternately on one chain and then the other.
The other one is loading screen mini games. Less of an issue now with ssds, but man I remember some fun little stuff back in the day with it.
yeah, loading screen minigames, nemesis system, sanity system, and now Nintendo's "tossing a ball at a target in 3d space"
it's actually 3 patents they're suing over
and they're suing for almost nothing in damages, in hopes that Palworld devs settle, to legitimize their illigetimate patents
The loading games thing was Namco or Atari or something wasn’t it?
Namco, yeah, I think
I need another place to rant about this, Eternal Darkness deserves better. But man, fuck nintendo, really. https://gamesfray.com/nintendo-secures-two-more-anti-palworld-u-s-patents-might-file-multi-patent-u-s-lawsuit-against-pocketpair-in-a-matter-of-months-now/
Well, might as well sue a potential competitor instead of actually trying to make an interesting Pokémon game.
I'm way less concerned about Palworld devs, and way more concerned with the chilling effect these kinds of patents have on the industry
they saw someone coming for their pokemon bag and mobilized 10,000-fold their legal dept
and now: capturing monsters and using them as mounts, literally might be at stake for gaming
like, why
disgusting lmao
Thats pretty wild, tbh
Eternal Darkness was solid tho, 7/10
Goddamn Nintendo needs its ass handed to it for this shit
ugh can i finish this in time. kinda fell off this week, im on chapter 5 i think
It depends if you use a guide and how much time you can commit. My save was 10hrs-ish, but i did use emulator fastforwards for recovery between fights and i saved very frequently
It does lol
Im going to sleep and i just dozed in and out of twilight. While i was half asleep, i was innundated with a caucophany of trapper demon souns effects, just, in my own head lol
Starting chapter 9…any tips for the boss fight in chp9
||Stay far enough away from it so that it’s using a beam attack and not summoning pillars of energy under you, because it won’t be vulnerable with that second attack. Hotkey the 3 power attack spell. I think second or third phase, he summons zombies and is only vulnerable for a brief window after all of them are up. So wait to start casting the spell until the second zombie is rising I think was the timing, because the spell has to arc between all enemies and sometimes it hits the boss first, sometimes it hits the boss last, which can mess with the timing. Also make sure you keep your highest level of shield up, as it prevents your spell casting from being disrupted which is very helpful. So if it starts getting low, just recast it early and it will replenish your orbs.||
Also, ||attacks are different depending on your route, but strat was the same for me||
Oh, also: theres an item that might help if you need it: ||Magick Elixir, in the 4-way room, go... south i think? Its on the slab where we see the guy cutting up the bodies in cutscenes, and where we visited before with Paul Luther and his buddy was on the slab||
Aaaaaaand done. As close to a buzzer beater as I’ve had in a long long while.
That was a stupid stupid game
Could of been horror.
Thanks for the tip guys. It took me 90 mins till I figured out the pattern. That was painful but now onto chapter 10
If you don’t mind some advice: here’s something I worked out to speed through chapter 10.
||once you get downstairs, there are loads of monsters you can run past which is much much easier than trying to fight them ||
This is basically true for the rest of the game.
My problem was that I enjoy the old ||fire axe to a zombie skull|| too much
Also shooting trappers. Like fuck those guys
I liked the idea and look of it, but it ended up being one of the worst weapons in the game, honestly.
Oh this was all about aesthetics
And the whole trapper thing was weird. There’s a monster whose sole purpose is to interrupt the game and allow you to heal whatever stat you want.
Whole purpose was to be annoying little shits, if you ask me
They were just time wasters mostly, occasionally useful. Mostly just kind of there.
a single magick attack clears the room of em, too. summon trapper is kinda fun because you can banish monsters
Man running this glyph thing over and over sucks
It's wild a game designer was like "yeah this is good"
Starting the fireman chapter
You are close. Should be albe to finish in time
Guess what? || the game designer like it so much, you get to do it again! ||
|| it’s so nice, we’ll have them do it twice. ||
I missed this lol just finished chapter 10 which was long cos I was killing every monster. Onto chapter 11
Oh no
How are you supposed to destroy these || runestones || and drop the force field in the 7th tower if you don't have || purple magic||
Yeah feels like I'm stuck without ||purple magic||
It’s not obvious but ||cast any magic attack using the 7 circle power level while stood somewhere in the circle||
Good luck with the rest of the game. The only other hint you might need is that the final boss ||can only be damaged with the sword and then only when it’s enchanted with the right colour||
Done! That was awful
Did not know this as I got the super special gladius that was always enchanted.
Any ideas on this? I’m by chapter 12 and can’t go forward.
I’m doing the green path. So close to finishing
These are artifacts I have. I’ve tried search and looking up long plays and people just walk through but I can’t due to invisible wall
Did you pick up the Heart ?
Check the ||library|| for the pulp fiction story you learned about in the Indiana jones chapter
I don’t think so. I have the blue and red essence
Looks like I missed this lol just heart of mantorok in chapter 6/7
Thanks. This was it. Lots of backtracking
Done. A day late but had to push through. From chapter 8 I solely had to rely on a guide. Enjoyable though but the final chapters were padded with bs mechanics
GG
Congrats. There's a video above that has the secret ending that happens after the 3rd playthrough. It's worth the watch. Can't find it right now :(.
