The only advantages the Konkr will get you over the Ally are the size, and possibly the battery life.

So if you don't need a smaller device to play PC games, I'd suggest passing on this one.

Hard to say. It seems they don't want to undercut the Ayn models, so keeping a price under the Konkr would make sense. They got the design down.

The RP5 seems very superfluous in light of the Odin 3 though.

yeah the Chinese seem to have a lot more problems with the drawbacks of OLED screens than we have here... maybe they are just more conscious of it, due to it being talked more about there, but at the end of the day it's whatever, also the KONKR seems to use an excellent panel, would be interesting to compare it to an OLED panel that in itself isn't top-shelf, like the rg556/557, as while good something like the RP5 or Portal screen naturally have the edge

that being said, outside of direct comparisons, nobody sane is bothered by a good IPS anyway

Probably pwm flicker, since I remember the 556 being much worse in that regard than a lot of other OLED handhelds.

Although I think GammaOS Next does reduce it a good bit via implementing DC dimming emulation.

But if you look at the device's face, it's mostly the the glass front that took the brunt of the damage ; the plastic underneath seem relatively intact. The right stick cap has been torn off but most of the buttons look OK.
It's as if someone had managed to open the device by forcefully separating the front and back orange plates, which also seem relatively unscathed.

Ayn and Retroid seem to be in different market segments, but they try not to step on each other's feet, so the RP6 might have a Gen3 with… maybe 8-12GB of RAM ?

So yeah, if that's the case, the RP6 might be some competition for the Pocket Fit, especially since Retroid probably wouldn't make the RP6 without an OLED screen.

As for comparable ergonomics, I don't know. The Konkr looks very comfortable, which most of the reviews confirm — probably more comfortable as is than the RP5 with a grip. Redesigning the shell for the RP6 would cost a lot more than just basically reusing the RP5 files.

A 4:3 device is bad for modern game streaming and for 16:9 emulation.
4:3 consoles pretty much top at the PS2, which currently ranges from very good to nearly perfect on the 8g2 / G3 Gen3.

So I would understand a G3 RP Mini, but an 8 Elite would be completely overkill ; better spend the money on something else.

I am generally anti OLED in products I know I will use nonstop. Basically only my phone. Every OLED phone I’ve had has had discoloration (burn in) but I do not ever expect to use one of these handhelds nearly enough to reach that point so it’s not a problem to me.

If you are playing SRGB content then technically a good LCD is near perfect color representation and often OLED is over saturated but in a way that many finds more pleasing. I like normal saturation on my retro games. In some of the konkr reviews you can see sonic (or other retro games) are less colorful on the konkr but it is technically more true to the original

The sub 300 price mark really appealed to me with this. It has enough CPU power to do it if you are comparing against the desktops cpus that can emulate PS4 rn, but it requires a lot of GPU power to get 60fps. It looks like only discrete GPUs can handle 1080p 60fps.

Yes. Light bleed is really the worst thing IMO. I had for instance 2 Bricks which I had to return due to awful light bleed. That’s 2 over 2 units. The Brick screen really sucks and I cannot understand how influencers put online videos which are obviously using settings that don’t reflect what you get at the end.

My only fear is about the screen. Not about darkest blacks, but about light bleed. In had 2 Brick samples and none is useable to me due to a screen I consider as shitty while so many write it is OK. My laptop has and IPS too, with the regular IPS glowing, but almost zero light bleed so I am not totally crazy about light bleed.

How is the Konkr screen about that ? I mean 75% brightness, pure black in a dark room : do you see light bleed ? In such circumstances, my IPS laptop shows not the slightest bleed while my Brick is totally crappy.

Yeah, I see how it looks that way, but I really wasn't trying to take a poop on the IPS with that (I still don't particularly like IPS for various reasons that are important to me).

And whilst I'm a really big fan of the black glass front and bezel hiding stuff, some videos and reviews make it seem like it's seamless and impossible to tell where it starts and where it ends (which for the most part is true in dimmer environments) - it isn't like it's impossible to see in brighter conditions and some videos made it seem like it's a unicorn panel / unicorn glass front design which I found curious and suspicious.

It was basically the first shot I saw that showed what I'm used to with other devices - which I actually don't rate as a negative, maybe even on the contrary as it confirms "there doesn't seem to be any trickery going on, it looks like expected".

Sorry for the long post as I really didn't intent to fuel some anti IPS trashtalk with it.

One of the reasons I'm interested in the Konkr actually is the IPS panel as I think it's better suited for a device I'd intent to share with my family and kids which can be careless when it gets to display care.

The only thing that still makes me kinda scratch my head is how there is supposedly zero lightbleed/IPS glow which I find hard to believe - if it's actually an edge-lit panel. This makes me think that reviewers either got a super-cherrypicked unit as I can't imagine that level of QC can be upheld through thousands of orders or reviewers are playing it down or there's something else going on (like doing the Konkr for a loss or break-even to establish the brand which would mean we could expect a steep downfall on shbsequent devices where they can't hold that level of QC for that price point).

I'm critical and curious by nature when something seems "to good to be true". I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

In theory neutrally tainted tinted (= black / gray) glass would just decrease the light output and equally affect all colors. Which makes this idea nonsense as you'd need to compensate with higher light output giving the same end result

But imho all this is tin foil stuff that doesn't matter anymore. On that lates video it just looks like a regular, good IPS panel as I'd expect.

If they can keep up the QC and have consistently low lightbleed/glow os something that we'll need to see with mass production units

Well yeah, that’s literally the exact benefit to full glass front lenses. It’s not just the fact that “OLED blends in seamlessly to the black versions”. It’s the fact that, unless they really horribly fuck up in designing, full glass fronts are practically never gonna have any light bleed since it doesn’t rely on a mounting frame that can be overtightened, the screen is literally just glued onto the lens.

It’s also why they, most of the time, have to make the “bezel” for the actual screen bigger than people would think it needs to be. Because it in fact does need to be that big, otherwise there’d be no screen lens space available to adhere to the shell, which would be ensuring the lens is at least adhered on all sides of the screen to the shell (instead of having just the top and bottom or left and right adhered, which adds just a tiny bit of extra stress where applied pressure can become a problem).

It's not just a matter of vision quality : for me concentrating on text on a small screen at close to arms length is pretty tiring. I can technically read it, but it's quickly uncomfortable. I'd rather play text-heavy games on a 24" monitor or a TV.

lol, the GitHub issues make me wanna poke my eyes out. So much nonsense on day 1 would make me insta-fold on developing anything for this community.

Also whilst there is some merit to the unasked for tracking stuff, I think this topic is a bit overblown. (outside of GameHub building on FOSS software without acknowledgement or contributing back, which is a whole different topic).
